I was a bit miffed that Steve Bruce didn’t name Matty Longstaff in the starting eleven on Tuesday. He instead settled on a midfield duo of Isaac Hayden and Jeff Hendrick with Sean Longstaff pushed further forward.
Matty had started in the three Premier League fixtures prior to the FA Cup defeat at Arsenal. It seemed that Bruce was just resting the local lad as he’d played only 30 minutes prior to his three starts and added a spark against some top clubs.
However, the team sheet was announced on Tuesday, and Matty was snubbed once again. The 20-year-old was only on the bench and due to events on the pitch wasn’t given a run-out.
Longstaff spoke to NUFC TV after yesterday’s training session. He was asked about the defeat at Sheffield as well as the upcoming match at Arsenal.
He echoed his teammates in saying that the performance wasn’t good enough and that there needs to be a reaction on Monday at the Emirates.
Matty was also asked about his recent string of starts and how he feels physically after his long layoff earlier this year. This was the young midfielder’s response:
“It was massive. It’s been a while, and it’s never nice when you’re not playing because you want to be out there and help the team.
“So obviously to get the three games in was good but to miss the next two is disappointing. But you have to stick with a manager, he’s got a plan and as a squad, we have to buy in which we have done.”
“So hopefully if I’m picked, I’ll be ready to play and show a bit of bounceback and resilience, and hopefully put in a performance to help us win the game against Arsenal.
“As a player, you want to play. I played three on the bounce and to be honest, I felt pretty good in them so, I think like all players you want to play nonstop.
“So if I’m called upon, which I hope I will be – we’ll wait and see – I’ll be ready to play.”

Again for the hard of hearing or just plain thick, ie you.
I don’t give a rat’s pataudi if you use bad language, even though the web editor has asked people not to, which you arrogantly disregard.
I was in the Falklands conflict so guess what, I’ve heard a bit of choice language in my time. To me it just shows you’re not able to articulate yourself very well, but surely that is for you to correct, not point fingers at others for your own failings and shortcomings.
I’m sure you’d inwardly like to move away from giving the impression of an obnoxious brat spitting the dummy who can’t accept he gets things wrong now and again and who just needs to have more respect for other people’s views from time to time.
Basically you’re a know it all, who doesn’t.

Comment #3Should have started the last game, it’s crazy how both Hendrick and Sean Longstaff started ahead of Matty.

Would love to know what the plan is! Seems to just be pack our half and run around after the ball, it’s 80mins of a defensive drill and try to get up the filed a bit for the last 10 when we’re chasing the game

I’d take Florian Lejeune back in a heart beat. The problem is Bruceless who I fear has a real problem with anyone who dares to challenge his tic-tacs.
Perhaps Bruceless has a touch of the “Emperor’s New Clothes Syndrome.”

Comment #22Munster I’m not getting into an argument with you but have you actually read Neil’s post the other day? Who did you think it applied to? It’s been said many times this blog is set up as accessible to all therefore a supposedly safe place for the young to venture here without some of your “choice” language. Perhaps your household is rife with it and your kids eff and blind at you but generally speaking most parents wouldn’t want their kids frequenting a place where profanities are thinly disguised to get through the filters, which I dunno if you’ve noticed, are placed there by design?
I believe the end of Neils rope is pointed by the promise to deal with offenders, are you wanting to play with that rope? It fitted very snugly around jibs neck. 😉

Comment #26Been back to work a few weeks, chaos is a understatement.
Apologies to anyone I upset or if I spoke out of turn, I’ve a feel I may upset a few with this post, I’ll try keep it short.
I’ve NO respect for Shearer as a man, I lost that the day he backed Souness over Bellamy and Dyer, when during Robsons rein and as Captain he did nothing to rein them in.
When he publicly backed Souness it felt like he’d betrayed Robson to me!
I’ve sorta kept reading as much as i could but haven’t posted, sick of watching Bruce flounder.
I disagree Shef Utd is the worst we played in X amount of years, utter tripe.
Saturday was as consistent as 90% of Bruces games at Nufc!
We’ve had maybe a dozen out of 60 or 70 matches were, we showed fight, a bit of magic, deserved the points.
That’s 12 out of 60-70, the rest of them have been EXACTLY the same as the Shef Utd game except points have papered over the display!
We’re consistently shite, who’s our regular 11?
I think Bruce has done excellent, to get to 18 months before the results matched the performances, if the results matched the performances from day 1, we’d be in the Championship now, well done Bruce take a bow.
No more flooky points or shitehousing through games!
We’re seeing the real Nufc under Bruce, with no distractions from what’s on show, no undeserved points to keep the screams at bay.
Ashley won’t sack him!
Sacking Bruce is admiting he’s wrong, that’ll happen the day after Bruce admits he’s not good enough!
I feel empty and angry, cant see a takeover in sight, no way any prospective buyer would be sitting by watching the manager skuttle the ship.
Nufc are adrift and rudderless, the main mast has snapped and she’s taking on water.
I’m about as low as I’ve been as a Nufc fan, I honestly feel We’re doomed!

A large non military helicopter flew over Heaton Park, from direction of training ground, flew towards SJP, virtually stopped over it and hovered for 1 min before heading towards airport.
