Magpie Bemoans Newcastle’s Soft Start Against Chelsea

Newcastle’s listless start against Chelsea did not befit a team just one spot above 18th in the table and heading for a relegation fray. There needed to be a sense of urgency from the opening whistle but Newcastle came out of the gate with an air of complacency.

A struggle against the in-form Blues was likely in the cards no matter what, but the difference in approach for the second half made the first 45 minutes all the more unforgivable.

Jamaal Lascelles returned after missing the last two matches to captain the team last night. Lascelles made an early goal-saving tackle on Tammy Abraham, which after the match Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel labeled as reckless saying:

“He risks too much of an injury of the opponent and, for me, it’s a foul because of that. It’s reckless but it was not to criticize. It was just to discuss with the fourth official.”

So what is Jamaal supposed to do, just let Abraham have an unobstructed shot on goal?

It was good to have the captain back but in the end, it didn’t alter the outcome as some poor defending led to two Chelsea strikes in the first half. That proved to be all they needed despite the improved second half from Newcastle.

Lascelles was interviewed after the game and he was disappointed with the Magpies’ start saying they needed to be nastier. This is what he said as published in The Chronicle.

“I just think we did not start well enough.

“From our goal-kick, we kicked it out for a throw-in and that set the tone.

“We need to realize we shouldn’t need to go one or two down to get going.

“We were off them a bit and made it easy.

“Against a team like Chelsea you have to be nasty and if you don’t do that their quality will come through.”

Newcastle’s next match is on Sunday at Old Trafford. The table could shift dramatically by then with Fulham to play twice prior to kickoff. The following day is also one to watch as Brighton host Crystal Palace.

We once again have to keep our eyes on the teams around us but Newcastle still have their fate in their hands. But it’s going to take consistency and wins for that to remain the case much longer.

I saw Pink Floyd live at Newcastle Odeon performing Dark Side of The Moon. I even managed to get tickets in the quadrophonic section.

Dark Side is probably one of he best prog rock albums ever made, I’ve worn out 2 albums just listening to it for hours.

With Ashley, Barnes & Bishop in control the lunatics are well and truly on the grass.

    I know mate , shocking really !

Why not play him ? What’s the point of keep putting him on the bench and leaving him there ? He’s not really gaining any experience sat on the bench !

    I don’t heart posts.

If I can’t dislike them, it’s not right I like them.

Apologies to all you heart hounds.

    Shields Gazette
Time running out for Steve Bruce?

    The clock stopped months ago.
    Put new batteries in
Or wind it up. But I guess we do that already

Doing nothing is not an option
All we hear is post match drivel about second half performances being better than first half performances.

    Its tiring to listen to.
    Inane.

A lot of pundits, fans and journalists have said Nufc are sleep walking into relegation.

A lot of fans must be the same, can’t see the wood for the trees.

This hasn’t just happened, form over last 14 weeks has had relegation written all over it.

Performances in the games we robbed points before that 14 week spell, screamed we were in trouble.

Saying what you see isn’t being negative, or wishing bad luck on the team, it’s showing concern, such a shame that’s shouted down on the blog.

Being positive and ignoring what’s wrong isn’t of any benefit to anyone, criticism and negativity can be positive if it’s constructive.

Irony is, quite a few can’t tell the difference.

January was the time to sack him, no good giving a new incumbent ten games. Probably give it to Jones so he can have his career ruined and end up managing in Cyprus.

He like Ashley, is going nowhere fast.

I’d rather Ashley had a moment of clarity, sacked Bruce, begged Rafa to come back, signs papers to hand the club to fans if the sale doesn’t go through.

    If Carlseberg…..

Shearer, if ya reading, save us!

Tell your mate he’s taking us down.

Tell him to walk, it’s the only way the club stays up this season!

You know it, I know it, all the fans know it, unless you convince Bruce, we’re down!

Would rather have Bruce Forsyth than Steve Bruce. His post match interview would be funny “good game good game” then asking the crowd where do they want the defensive line “higher or lower”.

I agree OP, and it’s horrific to watch us slipping praying that other teams are good enough to beat the mighty Fulham.

I mention my nephew is a Fulham fan. He said himself and his mates are very very confident of overtaking us, well before the time they play us.

    I didn’t argue with him!

IF we were relegated, could Ashley pocket the parachute payment (>£100M), and then sell at a cut price £200M?

He’d be more likely to pocket the money, saddle the club with another £50m of debt, then demand £400m, if by some miracle we get straight back up.

Dammit, missed the Pink Floyd surge half an hour ago. Just say, brilliant interpretation of Comfortably Numb there Tsunki. I was lucky enough to get to Earl’s Court on the “Pulse” tour in ’94. Probably the best gig I’ve ever been to.
Then for my 70th bidet my son took me to see the Pink Floyd exhibition at the Victoria and Albert museum. Blood mind blowing!!
All we have to do, is keep talking.

If the takeover can be completed say by the end of March, and it’s not conditional on staying up, I really don’t care if we go down. I’d rather have that than staying up with Ashley in place for the rest of my life. We could regroup, appoint a good young manager and it would give us time to put a coherent plan in place. SJP would be full and rocking and there would be hope.

Following relegation Ashley will have to knock his famous 70% off the price of NUFC.

Sadly I don’t think he’ll get any takers.
