Bruce Responds To Questions Over Magpie’s Future

Earlier this year, there was some news that Newcastle were hesitant to offer Dwight Gayle a new contract despite Steve Bruce’s hope to keep him beyond this season. The 31-year-old’s current deal runs out this summer but he’s been injured for much of the past two seasons.

Gayle has started just 11 games during Bruce’s tenure. He made his first start of this campaign in the 1-0 defeat to Chelsea on Monday. Though he has made over 30 appearances the past two years, he’s been mainly an impact sub who hasn’t had much of an impact lately.

Gayle has scored just 11 Premier League goals for Newcastle since the promotion season in 2017. He was a regular under Rafa Benitez in our first season back but managed just 6 goals. His best run in a Newcastle shirt in the top flight came at the end of last season when he scored 4 goals in 8 starts down the stretch.

He was all set to become the focal point this season before suffering a serious knee injury in the first preseason game. Newcastle upgraded to Callum Wilson, which meant opportunities were always going to be sparse for Gayle when he returned.

That had been the case with Gayle making only cameos since coming back from his knee injury. It was a promising start with a goal against West Brom in his season debut. However, he’s yet to hit the target again.

However, Gayle now has a massive opportunity with Callum Wilson to miss at least the next five matches. His first start at Chelsea wasn’t exactly eye-catching, but it was a tough fixture for Dwight to get his first start in.

During his press conference yesterday, Steve Bruce was asked about Dwight Gayle’s performance and whether it warranted another start against Manchester United on Sunday. This is was the head coach’s response:

“It was always going to be difficult for Dwight. We’re aware that it was his first start of the season.

“Dwight, at the start of the season, had a knee operation. That’s been, unfortunately, too many of our players.

“So we knew it was going to be a difficult ask for Dwight. But he stuck at it. He got 65 minutes under his belt and we always know he can score a goal.

“He’s got some minutes under his belt which only can help.”

It appears Bruce has not abandoned the idea of giving Gayle a run during Wilson’s absence. So we’ll see if he gives him another opportunity tomorrow at Old Trafford.

Gayle’s future is even more in doubt with his contract running out this summer. Newcastle have decisions to make on a handful of Magpies with Fede Fernandez, Fabian Schar, Andy Carroll, and Jacob Murphy joining Gayle in the final months of their contracts.

The club may have options to extend Fernandez and Schar, who have played well when fit while getting plenty of match time this season. The same cannot be said for the trio of Gayle, Carroll, and Murphy, who haven’t gotten long runs in the team.

Bruce was asked about Gayle’s contract running out and he responded with the following as published in The Chronicle:

“There are a number of players with contracts up.

“And Dwight is one of them.

“There will be conversations to be had over the next few weeks. I am sure.

“We are in the middle of Covid, and in the middle of trying to secure our Premier League status.

“So discussions will be ongoing I am sure.”

In at least the case of Gayle, he’s going to have to get goals over the next few weeks to justify any talks of an extension. With his injury history, while being over 30 and not putting in consistent performances, the cards are stacked against him being here after this season.

My worry is Dubravka. He should be going straight back in. He is still our best goalkeeper and although Darlow has been capable Dubs attributes are still above his and we need the best chance we can get to at least shut teams out. That means getting our established defensive team back in.

I think Bruce is showing too much loyalty to Darlow for his good service in Dubs’ absence to the detriment of the team. Our defence is stronger with Dubs back in and he needs to be starting tomorrow.

    Tsunki,

Here what you are saying about Ashley, we all know what he has done and you are right but Newcastle United is still a huge pull for a young up n coming coach who im sure would love to have a crack at a job like that regardless of Ashley.
Someone like an Ainsworth or Paunovic would jump at the chance i`m sure of it.
The dino`s wouldn`t go near us, and i`m glad about that, but ignorance and a glorious challenge is bliss. they would have nothing to lose imo.

WLToon I’m sorry but there’s too much wishful thinking in the idea that we are still a big pull. I think on the contrary we are a salutary lesson we ate the rocks on which yo shipwreck a bright and promising career, the graveyard of the tired journeyman has-been. Ashley has emphatically put a big red “X” on the front door.

I agree about Dubs being reinstated , he is better than Darlow, and more vocal.
He made a few mistake before he got injured but how many keepers don`t make the odd blooper.
Dubs was far more exposed than most keepers in the PL, the fact he made so few mistakes tells you all you need to know, one of the best keepers in the PL, if not Europe.

Darlow and Gillespie should be sold in the summer, Dubs and Woodman can fight it out for No1, promote Dan Langley to 3rd choice and Bob’s your uncle.

A young and hungry coach would doubtless want to bring his own ideas and practices – but would not be able to bring in the talent required.

So he would be left with the job of making a silk purse out of a sows squad.

Did you say earlier that your point about Rafa working under Ashley was hypothetical?

If so, a linguist would surely use the word ‘could’ rather than ‘can’ (see it happening)?

I’d have thought that it’d make more sense to reinstate Dubs and let Darlow, a young English keeper, decide if he’s hapoy to be third choice after Woodman when he returns from his loan.

    Tsunki,

No need for an apology because deep down you are probably closer to the truth than me, Ashley has tarnished our name , make no mistake about it, but i still think to a young coach the name of Newcastle United and their fans would be a huge pull.
I hope we are never in that position to find out of course.

    Tackle,

You don`t need a team full of superstars to win the champo, just a good coach who knows wtf he is doing and has a good backroom staff on the same page.
Look at Paunovic at Reading, doing a cracking job with practically no money.
There are coaches galore would take us on , even without ST Max and Miggy, Dubs and one or two others we would be strong enough for that lge, no question about it.
Anyway, it`s all conjecture, not worth spending too much time on as i doubt we will go down.

The car analogies seem to work well with our situation, houses too, but I think we sell more cars in a lifetime than houses so that’s why the car one tends to be used more. There’s not really much else the average Joe sells in life. Although I did once sell a Samsung VR headset on e Bay once.

Bruce is strange fellow. He says “we’re in the middle of Covid”, er no, we’re at the tale end of getting it behind us, and he claims “we’re in the middle of saving our PL status” – surely bloody not!! I would have thought he’d been trying to do that from the start of the Season, not just woken up to the shite mess he’s created with his stupidly negative, football, attitude and “laissez faire” press conferences.

Good story that – reminds me of the blog on a hot session.

Too many people with too little information trying to get limelight and followers.

Always thought Twitter was a dungeon for the bored and hopeless, nothing so far has changed that view.

At the moment we are living through a pandemic which is claiming so many lives, not to mention a lot of people have also lost their jobs, and the lockdowns are causing so much stress and mental anxiety, these are the real things we know about and experience every day) In reference to the takeover, there are to many known unknowns, to many uncertaintys, my advice for what its worth, look after yourself, and look after your family and loved ones, its just not worth worrying about a takeover which might happen, or might never happen, its just not worth it fellow fans, never forget the most important things in life are your health, your happiness, and your family.

Ofc family is what’s most important but when you’ve been invested for as long as people have been, it’s hard not to be effected by the situation of our football team.

That Rafa rumour seemed to cause a right stir last night, I just can’t understand why people allow themselves to get excited over a rumour, completely ignoring the stark reality of why there’s not a snowballs chance in Hell of Rafa coming back under Ashley. His mate Gullane Billage even said as much a while back.

While I think Darlow has done very well, I’ve always felt nervous when he’s in goal, where I always have more faith in Dubravka’s all round ability. It would be a travesty to lose him or for that matter Woodman, who I think will be better than both.

I don’t see why Benitez returning would mean that a take-over is definitely happening.

We already know what Rafa wanted to stay: £9 million per year. The club offered Benitez £6 million (parity) with less control of transfers.

Obviously there would have been a compromise if Ashley wanted Rafa to stay; say £7.5 to £8 million per year, keeping final say on transfers.

If, and it’s a big IF, the club made Bentiez a good offer — I believe he’d come back with certain assurances. The Rafa effect on fans makes him financially worth more to Ashley than other clubs — due to the fact Benitez will pull some fans back. Other clubs don’t have that problem.

Rafa didn’t want to stay mate he saw enough over his time to know that things wouldn’t change and all the empty promises that stayed exactly that.

He went back asking for more money as he knew fine well Ashley wouldn’t agree to it

When are we going to make these journos culpable for their actions.

They come out with fake information, totally made up stories and general wind ups, which then get interpreted by other journos and turned into perceived truths.

This raises the stakes all round and everyone gets over excited, only to be dropped with a thump later.

No comeback on the journos that started it though – they just move on to the next lie.

What was it they used to do to false prophets?

( zero points if you answer that with “play them at no10”)
