The Magpies have put in an admirable first-half performance at Old Trafford and find themselves level at 1-1 at the break. A brilliant goal from Allan Saint-Maximin erased a strike from Marcus Rashford as the lads put in a perfect reaction to going down.
Newcastle were back in the 4-3-3 one again with Almiron in the middle, Joelinton out to the right, and Saint-Maximin on the left. Isaac Hayden was tucked behind Willock and Shelvey with a backline of Krafth, Lascelles, Clark, and Lewis.
The Magpies started the match much more aggressively than last week. From an early corner routine, Joelinton got a shot away, despite a poor first touch, that was deflected forcing David de Gea into an acrobatic save.
Twenty-five minutes in and Newcastle continued to unsettle the Red Devils holding them to a couple of tame efforts despite them having 70% of the possession. Newcastle mustered four attempts in the early stages though only Joelinton’s and a long-range effort from Almiron required any action from de Gea.
Manchester United grabbed the lead with a goal from Marcus Rashford in the 30th minute. The forward nutmegged Krafth and burst into the box. Emil recovered but was dinked again by Rashford and couldn’t stop him from launching a low shot that beat Karl Darlow at his near post. Very disappointing goal to concede.
Newcastle won a corner in the 34th minute where Almiron played it short to Shelvey who launched it over everybody in the box. Saint-Maximin gathered the ball, drifted to his left, and launched a blistering shot that De Gea brilliantly saved.
On the subsequent corner, Newcastle tried the routine again but this time it was Willock with a delivery that was poorly cleared to Saint-Maximin in the box. The Frenchman rocketed the ball into the roof of the net to get Newcastle back on level terms. This was an excellent reaction from the lads after conceding.
This was an encouraging first half from Newcastle bar the goal from Rashford which Krafth and Darlow could have done better on. The lads have been aggressive, pressed high, and held the Red Devils in check for the most part.

Comment #241Brucie can’t wait to get off – no commiserating the players, no pat on the back.
Just walks off with Ole, smiling, drooling and no doubt asking “Where’s the bacon”

Comment #245Decent first half performance. Dire second half performance. Just shows you how bad we are losing to them. They’re an average team and they were all over us second half. Willock looks useless. No wonder Arsenal let him go.

Since his premier League debut a year ago Bruno Fernandes has himself scored 11 goals from the Penalty spot than any other team in the League, more that Chelsea and Leicester each with 9 penalties.
1. sack Bruce.
2. bring in Tom Daley to teach diving practice
3. pay our subs to the refs retirement fund
4. demand a Fraud Squad investigation
5. Copy what Man U do

Comment #250Darlow should have saved the 2 goals at his near post.
Bruce again making decisions too late.
And that was a soft penalty! He hardly touched him and he dived. Was there no VAR?

Comment #252Australian pie when have we been in form tho?
We had luck at the start of the season from then on we’ve been pretty much terrible plus now we haven’t got a striker
There is no chance of us catching burnley or Southampton or Brighton

Comment #253Wondering now if Bruce has been released from his duties 2 weeks back
Jones clearly told to stay in the background for fear of the press jumping on it .
Whos the head coach ? Jones was bending a few players ears with instructions ..Bruce looking on strangely

Comment #257So Steve whats your take on tonight’s game
Well we can take some positives out of it
Whats those steve
Well we were in it until they went ahead again
Fulham Steve are now ony 3 points behind you
Yeah but we are only one point behind Brighton and 3 points behind burnley
But they are better teams Steve with better managers and play better football
Yes but they are the negatives
You mentioned Brighton Steve they could be 4 in front as they have a game in hand
Yes thats a small negative
Whats the biggest positive you can take from tonight’s game Steve
Eh that I won’t be sacked in the morning as the owner is ecstatic that I have followed his remit down to a tee I told him when we were near the top half that it wouldn’t last and I would get us to 17th asap
Thanks Steve
No problem

Comment #260Out of Place and us to go down ? me thinks, can we find more goals in our team (can’t see it). We did play well against the team now 2nd in the league, but the lack of changes from the top earlier on in the season before Christmas my have cost us.
Will Ashley sell us in the Championship for 350mil NOPE.
Has he learnt his lessons, nope.
Should we sack Bruce now, yep as he will not take responsibility for the results and was never good enough.

Comment #261Bruce’s GD record is absolutely appalling.
Credit to Jones for bringing in the press. Trouble is our players are obviously not fit enough to do a whole game with it. Only Almiron looks like he can keep running.
Obvious things are:
Dubs back in
Any alternative for Kraft.
Take Lewis out of the firing line.
Shelvey out full stop. Maybe for Anderson. We need legs in the middle
Maybe bring Toure in up front.
Gayle, Carroll and Jo (as a striker) really not fit for purpose either at this level. .
Munster
Dougie said he’d only want us to go down if we are guaranteed the removal of the fat man, not otherwise. Good to contextualize these things.
