Steve Bruce has given his press conference ahead of Newcastle’s all-important match at West Brom on Sunday. He’s given a less than encouraging update on injuries. It appears that Isaac Hayden has been having some trouble with an ankle injury.
Here is some of Bruce’s update on injuries according to the club’s Twitter account:
“We’ve got one or two knocks. We’ll see how Isaac Hayden is, he’s been carrying an ankle injury for a week or two.
“Emil Krafth has got a nasty shin injury so we’ll see how they are today and tomorrow.”
Krafth will reportedly return to training today after being forced off against Wolves with a shin injury. The news on Hayden leaves Newcastle in a very tough situation at right-back if both players are ruled out for Sunday.
Javier Manquillo returned to training this week but whether this weekend is too soon for the Spaniard is unknown. If all three are unavailable for the Hawthorns, Jacob Murphy could be called on to fill in at right-back.
As for Federico Fernadez, who returned to training a few weeks ago, Bruce said he is in with a chance on Sunday. Fede has missed the last nine matches with his hamstring injury. So getting the Argentine back could help shore things up at the back.
Bruce is operating with a very depleted squad both in attack and at the back. His decisions on approach and team selection is going to be very interesting for this crucial match at the Hawthorns.
