Newcastle fans have had very little to get excited about since the start of the new year. There have been just two wins amidst a flurry of disappointing results. While the lads did show something different in the win at Everton, it hasn’t turned into a consistent formula for winning matches.
The two lone highs of 2021 have probably been the addition of Joe Willock on loan from Arsenal and the signing of free agent Matthew Bondswell, who has the potential to be a Newcastle regular in the future.
Willock has started all seven matches since joining and grabbed a wonderful debut goal against Southampton, which was the last time Newcastle won a match.
Despite the turbulent times since our last win, Willock has been effusive with his praise of Newcastle and their fans. This has no doubt endeared him to the supporters.
Young Matthew Bondswell joined Newcastle just a few weeks ago as a free agent. The 18-year-old had recently reached a mutual agreement with RB Leipzig to leave the club. Despite stiff competition, Newcastle were able to snap up the promising left-back.
The youngster has given an interview in which he, like Willock, expresses his delight at joining such a ‘massive club’. He also gives some insight into why he chose Newcastle.
Here is some of what Bondswell had to say after his first few weeks on Tyneside:
“It’s a great feeling to join such a massive club with great history. I’m really looking forward to being able to get out onto the pitch and train with all the boys.
“I’ve been with the under-23s at the minute and I’m really enjoying it. There’s a lot of really good players in the team which is always a good thing in terms of how well we can do but also in training sessions and being able to test yourself.
“I think Newcastle was the club which made the most sense in terms of where I am at the moment. They offer the best opportunity for me to be where I want to be in the future.
“If you ask every footballer, the majority will say their goal is to play in the Premier League. That is part of the reason why I came to Newcastle as well because of the projects they have had with the young players in the under-23s, and hopefully going on to playing first-team football.
“As well as the football side of things, I’ve heard many great things about the city. I have a few friends living up here so that helped in making the decision, being in and around a place where I feel comfortable and being able to settle in quickly.”
Bondswell seems like a smashing young lad who Newcastle have done very well to add to the ranks. He’s represented England from the U15 to U18 level and, hopefully, can develop into a full international in the future.
He seems very confident and determined to make it at Newcastle. If all goes well, we could have a top English left-back before too long.
