New U23 Signing Reveals Why He Chose To Join Newcastle

Newcastle fans have had very little to get excited about since the start of the new year. There have been just two wins amidst a flurry of disappointing results. While the lads did show something different in the win at Everton, it hasn’t turned into a consistent formula for winning matches.

The two lone highs of 2021 have probably been the addition of Joe Willock on loan from Arsenal and the signing of free agent Matthew Bondswell, who has the potential to be a Newcastle regular in the future.

Willock has started all seven matches since joining and grabbed a wonderful debut goal against Southampton, which was the last time Newcastle won a match.

Despite the turbulent times since our last win, Willock has been effusive with his praise of Newcastle and their fans. This has no doubt endeared him to the supporters.

Young Matthew Bondswell joined Newcastle just a few weeks ago as a free agent. The 18-year-old had recently reached a mutual agreement with RB Leipzig to leave the club. Despite stiff competition, Newcastle were able to snap up the promising left-back.

The youngster has given an interview in which he, like Willock, expresses his delight at joining such a ‘massive club’. He also gives some insight into why he chose Newcastle.

Here is some of what Bondswell had to say after his first few weeks on Tyneside:

“It’s a great feeling to join such a massive club with great history. I’m really looking forward to being able to get out onto the pitch and train with all the boys.

“I’ve been with the under-23s at the minute and I’m really enjoying it. There’s a lot of really good players in the team which is always a good thing in terms of how well we can do but also in training sessions and being able to test yourself.

“I think Newcastle was the club which made the most sense in terms of where I am at the moment. They offer the best opportunity for me to be where I want to be in the future.

“If you ask every footballer, the majority will say their goal is to play in the Premier League. That is part of the reason why I came to Newcastle as well because of the projects they have had with the young players in the under-23s, and hopefully going on to playing first-team football.

“As well as the football side of things, I’ve heard many great things about the city. I have a few friends living up here so that helped in making the decision, being in and around a place where I feel comfortable and being able to settle in quickly.”

Bondswell seems like a smashing young lad who Newcastle have done very well to add to the ranks. He’s represented England from the U15 to U18 level and, hopefully, can develop into a full international in the future.

He seems very confident and determined to make it at Newcastle. If all goes well, we could have a top English left-back before too long.

I can’t see Willock being too keen on playing his trade in the Championship.

See where you are coming from Adamn but I would still see it as pointless in him letting the club Roy, if he couldn’t sell it this time then he would have to do a semblance of maintenance on our club so he can try to sell in the future.
Good to see you’re still positive and all the best for moving in with your better half.

I guess it depends on his mindset and who can ever tell with Ashley. We might think it’s pointless him letting it rot, Ashley might think it’s pointless to invest in when he could be investing in what he knows best, retail. He does the bare minimum every season and gambles in the hope we stay up so he can sell us for a high price. Looks unlikely this season but if we do stay up, he’ll see it as mission accomplished and look to sell us again. If he can’t it’ll be bare minimum again, leave it to Charnley and ignore us all season again, rinse and repeat until we’re sold. If we go down this time and don’t get sold, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he just stops any investment at all and offers us round at a discount to finally get rid.

Thanks for the good wishes! Focusing on more non-football related things at the minute to stay positive haha Hope all is well with you and your family.

Yes, Ashley’d have to budget for maintenance but with reduced cash in the Championship, things can only go from bad to worse.

As each year passes, maintenence’d be carried out on absolutely necessary basis and as work is deferred, the cost accumulates. Any buyer’s see that and thus the club’s worth and therefore a buyer’s assessment and price reduces.

Ever decreasing circles comes to mind.

Hopefully Harry Kane will get a few goals out of his system before he turns out against us on Sunday.
A win against the Poles will see us well on the way to World Cup qualification under the excellent Gareth Southgate.
    C’mon England !

Lesh if Ashley didn’t sell the club I would expect him to loan the money to the club to get us back up as quick as possible.
But if he is selling the club then he ain’t going to give a fig what state it’s in as the fee has probably been set for staying up or going down.

Don’t know why anybody would want to invest in the high Street now, i m o it’s finished people have had the habit of going shopping broken by all these lock downs.
The high Street of the future will be niche market shops, no chain stores.

  • Carson80

    Mar 30, 2021 at 2:59 PM

Also Ashley has left it too late on many of these chain stores as they have already had their name and Internet site bought by rivals. Which just leaves the empty shops and he ain’t investing in bricks and mortar because they are all lease owned.

Ashley never seems to do anything that a logical person would maybe that’s why hes a billionaire and we aren’t mind you!!

His retail empire is thriving despite having shops closed and there has been calls for him to pay back some of the money he borrowed from the government

Hes been using furlough for our club so isn’t losing any money out of that either

Either way you look at it the pandemic has worked out okay for him who knows what the hell he is thinking with regards to Newcastle

Viva – nothing the matter with borrowing words from our European neighbours even though at the current time they are doing the best to punish the UK for leaving.

The money we will save is in the billions and has put the EU on the verge of being bankrupt.

I like France – but they are the old enemy and will relish getting the boot in against us – they cannot help it.

I like Lesh, he’s one of the good uns. Makes me smile, I imagine him as a benign Jeremy Corbin lookalike with corduroy trousers and leather patches on the elbows of his jackets.

Sitting out in the sunshine, reading The Guardian and Workers weekly, while shedding the odd tear for the loss of his pals in the EU, despite Jeremy always hating it until he had to make a decision, then there wasn’t a fence wide enough for him to sit on!

Knotted hanky on head, red of course with gold hammer and sickle in corner, protecting his balding pate from global warming, while blaming the sunshine on the tories and their flag waving friends.

Brings a warm glow to my cold northern heart. 🙂
