Report Suggests Bruce Could Be Rewarded If He Keeps Newcastle Up

On Sunday, when Newcastle invite Tottenham to St. James’ Park, this dismal and disappointing season will resume after a two-week international break. While you generally don’t want to stew for too long after a performance like the one Newcastle put in at Brighton, the 15 days between matches did provide some advantages.

First and foremost, it allowed our injured stars some extra recovery time. While Callum Wilson is still another week away, all signs point to Allan Saint-Maximin at least returning to the bench on Sunday. Miguel Almiron, who was rushed back for Brighton, should be fully fit for Spurs.

After the Brighton defeat, Newcastle were quick to throw their support behind embattled head coach Steve Bruce. It seems the two weeks since the awful 3-0 thrashing at the Amex has only served to strengthen Ashley’s resolve.

Recent reports have suggested that no replacement has been identified despite claims that Chris Wilder, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, and Eddie Howe would be interested should the position become available.

However, the ever-stubborn Ashley remains committed to the head coach he selected to replace Rafa Benitez two summers ago. According to a report in The Telegraph, that will remain the case beyond this season if Bruce manages to keep Newcastle up.

Luke Edwards also suggests that Bruce could be offered an extension this summer as his contract runs out after next season. Edwards theorizes that Ashley could even offer improved terms though with a much less compensation package.

Newcastle’s tenuous league position has hampered planning for next season. An empty St. James’ Park for this entire campaign has also severely cut any transfer budget this summer. Though Bruce has been involved in the minimal recruitment plans that have taken place.

Edwards says the current plan is for Bruce to see out the rest of this season. Though that is not etched in stone as another performance like the one at Brighton could produce a change of heart from Ashley.

However, while Bruce boasted of a top ten push before this season, his remit has been to keep Newcastle in the Premier League. Despite flirting with disaster, if Bruce keeps Newcastle safe for a second season, he will have satisfied his boss’s extremely low expectations.

I’m basing my opinion on Joe from his last club
    It’s where he played
He has done ok out there occasionally for us
    Ish

    He’s just not a striker

I like your set up but like many fear Joe is wasted as striker.

I’d have Carroll there and drop Joe back to partner Willock. Rafa did similar with Diame and his game took off, played much better with more of the pitch, players and options in front of him.

Perhaps the same could happen for Joe, I doubt the head coach has even considered it let alone tried it in training.

    …………………Dubravka.
    Manq…Lascelles…Fede….Dummett.
    …………..Willock…..Joel
    …Murphy……Almiron…..Fraser.
    ………………..Carroll

It was a dig at the way the discussion was going – it was a roundabout way of saying “look at what you are saying – and what it infers”.

If you took that personally, then you were thinking too deeply I guess.

That aside – don’t you think it’s relevant that sharing any knowledge is better for all than to just say “I’ve been told” and then say nothing.

You make yourself a target for the ITK hate brigade that way surely.

Problem with Carroll is teams have always had to play to his strengths if he is to be a regular -especially in his later injury ravaged years.

Remember Brendan Rodgers reaction to Liverpool’s record recent signing by Dalglish when he arrived as new manager. He (rather stupidly) declared Carroll wouldn’t be part of his team as they wouldn’t play to suit him. Couldn’t flog him for ages after that.

His best spells with West Ham as with us were with Kevin Nolan alongside.

If he starts he will be isolated and needs quick support. Miggy does seem obvious candidate for that role but as others point out he also needs wingers.

if we play 2 wide men that makes me worry about centre midfield where we need energy and mobility and neither Shelvey or the 20-21 version of Sean Longstaff provide that. Both loose their man and ball too often. Matty is still learning so we have Hendrick .

Hmmm is he the best we have right now for CDM? Not convinced but it could be mitigated by the right choice of midfield partner.

Could Schar do a job there as some have suggested over the months? I think he had at least one run out there but I don’t recall his performance if he did which I suppose speaks volumes

Elliot Anderson? He’s getting great reviews but England youngsters but I am not an advocate of throwing young players into a desperate situation usually

Bruce has some big choices to make not only on personnel but shape and tactics and like all on here I doubt he can get all right

Hoping for one of those games where you expect the worst and we play great or even get lucky and snatch a point ( like game at WHL)

OP with all due respect etc, if you call all this repetition from Toon 22 a good contribution, then good luck to you. Reading “who will he sell us to next” 10 times a day is hardly much craic for any of us. In fact we should probably ban Ashley talk because there is little new to learn there.

I’d rather have a laugh at some non football stuff about people’s lives, travels etc, than being told I’m PR by a guy who’s never stood on the Gallowgate.

Its far better when 22 talks about his opinions on the team, than castigating people like NY, because he isn’t screaming enough or foaming at the mouth about ashley.

I think it’s a trait of yours – and you’ve said it yourself in reflection.
    You take things too personally.

Share what you know, or give your opinion – you will get some negative and some positive – you have to accept both. There will always be 2 sides and multiple opinions that differ – that is the nature of debate and blogging.

It’s not about who wins and who loses.

Mund I see Mr Patterson was still optimistic for a takeover, even if we go down.

That said, his optimism is based on Di Marco and shaheed essentially just taking on cases they think they can win, rather than being based on the clarity of seperation of PIF and state.

However I’m staying optimistic. As it is, the karma of us laughing at Sunderlands demise is coming around to bite us as we both potentially start off next season in the same league 🙁

Still, if geordies can’t laugh at mackems when they tumble two seasons in a row and then rot for a while, when can they?

A stottie cake or stotty (Northumbrian: stottie kyek) is a type of bread that originated in North East England. It is a flat and round loaf, usually about 30 centimetres (12 inches) in diameter and 4 centimetres (1.6 inches) deep, with an indent in the middle produced by the baker.

Jail!!!!! Toilets, you don’t have to go any further than ITALY, GREECE. It’s my pet hate, in the twenty first century, Italy and Greece have holes in the ground in some of their toilet blocks, and this is on modern camping sites run by Dutch and other so called modern countries. Are we the only country in the world where we take toilet facilities seriously.

I said we should play Clarke in the holding role as his running stats, distribution, passing stats, and tackling are far superior to Hendrick.
Clarke is good at bringing the ball forward as well.

Speaking of toilets, never forget the game in Milan all those years ago. Side of stand I was in only 1 toilet block shared by men and women, lots of urinals and 2 holes in the ground with doors round them. Remeber came out before kick off and 2 women asked me where the womens toilets were, I just had to point and say, sorry, got to share. Shocking situation
