The lads have come through with a massive result after a fighting performance at St. James’ Park against Spurs. Second-half substitute Joe Willock’s late goal handed Newcastle a well-deserved 2-2 draw.
Newcastle emerged for the second half unchanged after going down 2-1 in an eventful first half. Miguel Almiron immediately tested Lloris with a shot from the right side of the box. It appeared to be going wide but Lloris took no chances and Newcastle won an early corner.
Newcastle continued their bright start to the half showing an intent to push players forward. However, they continued to have trouble crafting really good chances to threaten Lloris.
Spurs almost added a third goal in the 66th minute. After a succession of corners, Dubravka punched the ball high into the air where a surging Tanganga headed it towards goal. Thankfully, it was straight to Almiron who headed the ball off the line.
Joelinton should have had his second just minutes later. After Murphy laid the ball off to Krafth down the right flank, the Swede sent a high cross which found Joelinton at the back post. He gathered the ball but his shot was poor and dribbled wide and out for a goal kick.
Bruce made his first change bringing Allan Saint-Maximin on for Dwight Gayle in the 71st minute. Saint-Maximin joined Joelinton upfront. Bruce then brought Joe Willock on for Krafth which pushed Shelvey very deep. The final change came in the 82nd minute with Javier Manquillo in for Murphy who appeared to be hobbled.
Harry Kane almost had his hat trick after a counter from a Newcastle corner. Paul Dummett did well to disrupt the break but the ball found Kane in the box. The striker took his shot which struck the outside of the near post.
Newcastle immediately launched an attack as Saint-Maximin surged up the pitch and found Matt Ritchie down the left. Ritchie put in a cross that was flicked back across the box. Joe Willock burst forward to blast the ball off the underside of the crossbar to make it 2-2 in the 84th minute.
Spurs pushed for a winner but Newcastle were able to keep them at bay to see out the match with a massive point. Now let’s hope Fulham don’t win so Newcastle can stay out of the bottom three.

Comment #1Best performance by us in a while
Murphy and Joelinton were my men of the match
Honourable mentions go out to Ritchie and Longstaff who justified their restoration to the team
Only one point but an encouraging performance Overall

Comment #2The lads showed a lot more effort and pride today with the shirt on and that’s all I’ve ever wanted to see in recent months.
So to see that and come away with a point vs Spurs is very satisfying
Hopefully when we line up at Burnley we will have Maxi and Wilson both start.

Comment #3Was impressed with Murphy and Ritchie. Actually, to play a top 6 team and look the better team, you need most everyone to put in a shift.

Comment #7Ritchie very impressive today. Very deserved point.
Wilson back instead of Gayle and think we would have won today. Take the point and build on it against Burnley

Apologies – I mistakenly described Kane’s first goal.
Having looked at the SECOND goal, I tend to agree – it was close enough to have a look – in slow motion, his arm is ahead and they have been given as offside – but NO, they never looked at it.

Comment #12Murphy gas to start next match.
However, Dubravka was weak on several crosses and his kicking was poor. Darlow had every right to feel aggrieved.

Comment #13Well played today, now come ob Villa
Just been on phone to Gavin saying we need him, Warren and Rob Lee as the top coaching team with a good director of football, we could have the Keegan days again, he is actually up for that

Comment #16I know we didn`t get the win but i was still pleased with the display.
Ritchie for me should start for the remainder of the run in, he is so committed to the cause.
His work rate along with Miggy could make all the difference, and S Longstaff deserves a start v Burnley..
Grealish out v Fulham. Fulham win unfortunately.
If there is a one an team in the PL it`s Villa.

Comment #17Great collective team effort against a very good team with an exceptional English striker who is pretty good in midfield.
Our English striker would have put at least one of our many chances into the back of the net. Hopefully Wilson is back for the next game even if it’s only for the last 25 minutes.
My MOTM is Joelinton. He scored one and made the second with his header back across the box but it’s his all round performance that impressed.

Comment #18Murphy should be our regular wingback right winger he creates so many good chances he deserves the slot
Having Richie otherside allowed us to have width either side which then creates space it’s not exactly rocket science can’t understand what Bruce has been about this season for most of it keeping Hendrick on so many games with negative formations has put us in deep trouble

Dubravka hasn’t been the same since his injury.
He seems fractionally slow, especially getting down.

Reading of Ritchie playing well confirms Bruceyboy’s extraordinary man management skills. By ignoring Ritchie for a few weeks, Bruce’s regenerated the hunger of old……….. it says here

Comment #22Thought we’d get at least a point there. Alongside Southampton 3-2 and Leeds 2-1, that’s probably only the third time we’ve been involved in an interesting game for the neutral watcher. I also havent jumped around as much in a game for over two years. Definitely think Jones was behind tactics. From the minute I saw the line-up thought it was Jones and fancied it. Unusual tactics, team selection, formation. All Bruces enemies brought back in and all did well. I now think we have a chance vs Burnley. A win vs Sheff Utd, and a draw at Fulham and we can scrape across the line. Must employ a respected, valued, in-demand, modern manager next season though.

Comment #23I thought that there was only 1 player who didn’t put in a proper shift today and that was Shelvey. To me the guy looks like he is running on empty all through the match.
Bruceless has learned to drop Hendick, now let’s hope he decides to drop Shelvey for the rest of the season.
I gave Miggy MoM, tireless running and a header off the line to keep us in the game.

Me- I wouldn’t of dropped Darlow
Watching Dubs end of last season quite often got beat low down and at the near post.
Today’s game where has that fight and commitment been for most of this season
Could it be Ritchie was playing – has to start every game now-on – even captain
Whatever Fulham do today next week is a BIG game beat Burnley and that drags them into the mire

Comment #30Happy with overall performance, thought we should have won. With Wilson in line up, we would have.
Murphy, Almiron and Joelinton, were the best 3 on the park, but a good effort from almost everyone. Got to keep Manquillo in ahead of Kraft.

Comment #32Seems we are too timid against the teams around us, try to not lose rather than win.
Then we play a team we’re not expected to get anything from and put in what is possibly our best performance of the season.
Now we’ve shown that we can play – and score, can we not just set up and play like that for all games?
