Newcastle United Supporters Trust Launch The 1892 Pledge

The Newcastle United Supporters Trust have launched a new effort to purchase a stake in Newcastle United. It has been named the 1892 Pledge and more can be learned about it at 1892pledge.co.uk.

Here is a 2-minute video produced by NUST which explains a little about what this endeavor hopes to achieve.

This is the mission statement from the 1892 Pledge:

The Trust exists to have all Newcastle United supporters involved in the ownership of this great club.

We have launched the 1892 Pledge Scheme as the best way to raise the funds so that through the Trust the fans can have a stake in the Club.

We believe that through fan ownership in the Club we will be able to secure the future of NUFC for all time.

We want the club to operate with integrity and transparency and have a clear strategy for success on and off the pitch.

From what I gather, fans can pledge money now that will be then used to attempt to purchase a stake in the club. If that is unsuccessful, the money will be kept while Ashley remains the owner in the event that Newcastle drop down leagues and the value of the club drops such as Portsmouth, Sunderland, and Bolton have.

However, if Newcastle don’t plummet down the divisions, or Mike Ashley finally sells up, the money will be donated to local charities. But one caution that must be said is that this is a long-term project that may not bear any fruit for many, many years, if at all.

The Chronicle and The Athletic’s George Caulkin are backing this effort from NUST and have written articles explaining their position. So if any fans are interested, you can go to their newly created website to find out more information.

When you pledge the money do you have to Access your account? I pledge a one off payment, is that it, you can’t actually pay. I can’t access my account, it’s not recognizing my email or password, really this bloody technology is beyond mel!!!

Tom, I reckon they will just sit back and see how this all pans out. I cannot see them putting lumps of cash in without some feedback from potential buyers..

Just follow the link, one off pledge, the amount then sort code and account number, you shouldn’t have to log in to anything.

I wonder if monies collected could be invested in the PIF fund allowing it to grow rather than just having a cash lump fund?
That way the PIF might allow the trust to own a small percentage of the club?
I know it seems a bit far fetched, but their fund would be an excellent binder of owner and supporters..

Actually – I love the idea – it’s what I was banging on about for a while.

Wor club – let us have a say.

It will be difficult to get enough money and hard to implicate – well, impossible under the current owner, but a good idea for the future.

I have to read more about it, by think I’ll go in for £10/month and see how it pans out.

dont think anyone will be diving in with big money till all the facts are on the table,
we need to know how the consortium feel about this, and what exactly NUST targets are,
Lets hope they can get the information out as quickly as possibly and we can build on this initial enthusiasm, I won’t be putting in till i have all the facts,
    but a really great idea,

Captain, there’s a germ seed of a good idea there. I’m not clever enough to germinate it but, supposing we became a minuscule part of the PIF and they in turn nominated a Trust member to sit on the board, wonder what the PL would think of that?

The former treasurer for NUST Paul Brown King is now in jail for stealing from charities in the North East that he was treasurer for. As far as i’m aware NUST never addressed this which is a bit concerning….

But, he’s in jail and hopefully there’s nobody dodgy left within the trust! I’ll be setting up a monthly pledge when i’m home from work tonight. Hopefully a few big names with ties to the north east which catch wind and make some sizeable pledges.

Have you noticed that being a pledger is one thing, but only the membership of NUST are the people who vote on where the money goes, one member one vote, so if you donate £5,000 (say), and aren’t a member of the NUST, you have no say in where your money goes, and the guy that pledged a quid (and is a member of NUST) has exactly the same say as you.

Also no monies can be returned.

That said I’ve still done it.

    From their FAQs

CAN I GET MY MONEY BACK?
We cannot return any money pledged to the Trust through the 1892 Pledge Scheme. All donations made are final and cannot be returned for any reason.

Please bear this in mind before pledging – no refund.
Like C/Bobs said – pledge only what you can afford to lose.

    Dubai M

You have to first get membership, then pledge.
1 member = 1 vote regardless of pledge amount

You also do not have to pledge any money and still have your 1 vote.

    Hibbit, the plan is twofold:

    (A) short term objective if possible try to raise £3.05 million for a 1% stake in current takeover.

    (B) long term ambition, if club doesn’t get sold, gets relegated and does a Sunderland, have enough in the kitty to rescue the club from oblivion.

Read up on what Hearts supporters have done and Rangers supporters are doing (later this year they’ll own 25%, and that started as a fan protest @ Ashley owning part).

Obviously, no one has attempted this on a Premier League scale, but it’s not impossible to “get a seat at the table” and if people make long term pledges, there will be an annual income that the Trust can use for the benefit of the future of the club.

I think it’s great, but it’s all about numbers 5,000 fans committing to £10/month is £600k annually. But if that was 50,000 supporters it’s £6M !!

It doesn’t need a lot of money from fans, it needs a lot of fans.

As Hibbit said, right now, only what we can afford to loose. Mind when you see the views of pages on this blog, even if we only put £1 in each for 1 view, that would be 10’s of thousands straight in

    IMPORTANT info.

I’ve asked the Trust and got this answer.

When you make a pledge, it’s only added to the total when the payment is processed.

So a £20 one off pledge is added immediately

A £10/month pledge only gets £10 added and a further £10 each month thereafter.

So theoretically, the current total could already (in reality) be approx 10 times what is shown.

All this excitement for buying a share and having a say, I owned shares in Newcastle United and was forced to sell to Ashley.
You either buy the lot because having 1% is a complete waste of time and you have no say.

His name is on the minutes of that annual meeting in 2019, about 7 months before he was jailed.

    http://true-faith.co.uk/newcastle-united-supporters-trust-agm-report/

Mentioned as treasurer here in 2014 so was treasurer for some time.

Like I said before, he’s been jailed and hopefully he was the only bad egg in the group so there’s nothing bad going on there anymore. Just can’t find anything from NUST that ever talks about it which seems odd.
