Steve Bruce opted to take the cautious approach at Burnley this afternoon. Knowing that Newcastle would maintain a 3-point cushion over Fulham no matter the result, Bruce left his dynamic duo of Allan Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson in reserve should they be needed.
Were they ever? The team didn’t have the same intensity as last weekend against Spurs. That was always a concern after Fulham’s defeat on Friday. But it was another frustrating performance for Newcastle fans to endure with so much on the line.
Then enter Allan Saint-Maximin. The enigmatic forward made his grand entrance alongside Wilson in the 57th minute trailing 1-0 at Turf Moor. Seven minutes later, Newcastle were up 2-1 after an assist and a stellar goal from Allan.
The lads also deserve credit as they lifted their levels once Wilson and Saint-Maximin came onto the pitch. More than a few players turned their poor afternoons around to contribute to this massive win.
But the came spark from Saint-Maximin that engulfed his teammates to put in rousing final 30 minutes at Burnley. Newcastle are just a different side with Allan and Callum on the pitch.
Saint-Maximin did media duties after his star turn today. He expressed his disappointment with being on the bench with the way the match was unfolding. Allan approached Bruce to put him in the match and let him show him what he could do.
This is what Saint-Maximin had to say about this afternoon’s win as published in The Mirror:
“I feel really great. Everyone knows how important these games are. I give this win to the supporters. I am happy to score to help my teammates.
“I was frustrated to be on the bench and we were losing 1-0. I said to the coach to give me 30 minutes to show me what I can do. I had to be ready.
“It is a big opportunity. We have six points on Fulham. We just have to win and keep going forward against West Ham. When you have been losing it is important to come back stronger.”

Without doubt my Manager of the Season.
How much to get moyes to Newcastle?

Comment #6Still not convinced by moyes
He’s found a winning formula at West Ham and hasn’t had many injuries to worry about
Doesn’t erase the multitude of spectacular failures in his catalogue

Comment #7Wondering on chance of dragging Burnley further into relegation more and looked at their fixtures which are similar run in to us.
They also play Sheffield U and Fulham . Much will depend on how both sides play on run in

Comment #8Happy to just limp through the next couple of games – maybe try and get a draw or two – but avoid a loss – tactically keep Fulham at arms length, then beat Sheffield UTD and still have a 4+ point gap so that the Fulham game doesn’t matter.

We don’t need anything if Fulham can’t get two wins – we’ve done our bit, now it’s up to them to catch us.

Yeah sounds like a plan but as ever can we pull it off?
No more injuries and key players back in form then it’s doable

Comment #15It doesn`t make any difference how good or bad a manager does , there will always be fans making excuses good or bad.
Be honest, not one fan wanted Moyes, whether he has been lucky with injuries or not, he has got the team playing to their potential.
They are without their main striker atm also.

Comment #16Missed the bus by a bit.
From the BBC
This was the first time Newcastle boss Steve Bruce had seen his team win a Premier League game in which they trailed at half-time since September 2013, when his Hull side beat Newcastle 3-2, ending a run of 44 winless such matches since (D5 L39).

We have a massive edge – that will take confidence from the – they cannot score at the minute either.
Their main chances for a win are Burnley and Us – can’t see them beating Arsenal, Chelsea or Man U – Southampton, maybe.
Thing is, they now need wins, draws won’t be enough – whereas we can now be a little more settled and accept a draw or two.

Comment #19A game of two halves! Not a moment too soon Bruce unleashed the Saint. Eight minutes later Bruce was booking a late summer flight to Lourdes, as the miracle occurred. The players then held firm and didn’t cave in like Fulham did at Villa.
As Supermac said the other day Joelinton can’t be relied upon to produce consistently good displays and Gayle isn’t good enough at this level.
West Ham at home is another important game. Can we do another double?

Agreed – but that game is against Liverpool – tough, but ultimately doable.
Life should be easier if the game is not a MUST win.

Comment #21I don’t thjnk we’d do a double over West ham. They are not the team that faced us earlier.
Moyes as got his machines well oiled and turning. They are matching towards champion league and will be up for this.
And lingard is on fire.

Comment #23Fulham need to win a third of their remaining games ,and need us to not get any points
1 more win and we’re safe
I think their players will have hoyed the towel in now
Only 6 games left 6 points adrift
Their loan players won’t want to get injured

Comment #24There are quite a few 6 pointers still to play and Fulham are involved in quite a few of them, even IF they win any of them it will still help us in a round a bout way.
We still have to help ourselves in the meantime.

Decide not to watch the match, go to the wilds of Nothumberland and beat myself with birch sticks for being a NUFC supporter.
And as a result we get a win.
Can’t change a winning routine now.
Its going to be a painful few weeks.

Comment #26Look let’s be honest, as it stands Fulham need to get a minimum of 2 x wins MORE than whatever we do.
Seriously, can they do that from their remaining 6 games?
