With revenues down due to Newcastle missing out on gate receipts this season, the summer transfer budget is expected to be quite minuscule. So it’s going to be a difficult task to significantly improve this squad.
However, Newcastle are set to see a slight financial bump this summer. According to a report in The Chronicle all Premier League clubs will receive an estimated £4.8m from the league due to Norwich and Watford bouncing straight back to the Premier League.
Both Norwich and Watford have clinched promotion which saves the Premier League on parachute payments. Bournemouth have secured a playoff birth so the amount could go up even higher should the Cherries come back up as well.
It’s uncertain whether this money will go to the transfer budget but any extra cash will certainly help as it could be a lean transfer window on Tyneside.
Newcastle could take the route of last summer and hit the free-agent market. We brought in Ryan Fraser, Jeff Hendrick, and Mark Gillespie to add some depth to the squad.
Hopefully, Newcastle will be welcoming Jetro Willems back this summer. It’s almost certain he will be leaving Frankfurt when his contract expires. Willems has still not kicked a ball in a match since his knee injury last January.
While the 27-year-old has made the last 8 matchday squads and continues to train, he’s just not found a way into manager Adi Hutter’s plans. Willems turned down an extension this past January which could pave the way for a possible reunion on Tyneside.
