Last Season’s Hero Is Getting Back To His Best For NUFC

Last season it was a common occurrence to have Martin Dubravka as our lone bright spot during many matches. He made the saves that kept matches close enough for some stirring late goals to grab unlikely points.

Karl Darlow mirrored his teammate at times this season when Dubravka was injured, especially early on. However, Dubravka regained his first-team place earlier this year and has slowly gotten back to his best.

Over the last few matches, Dubravka’s made some tremendous saves to give Newcastle a fighting chance. That was none more apparent than this past weekend at Anfield. Martin’s performance kept Newcastle just a goal down for Joe Willock’s dramatic equalizer.

In our recent polls for the Man of the Match, Martin’s been outpaced by the exploits of Allan Saint-Maximin. The Frenchman has been nothing short of sensational since returning from his groin injury.

However, Dubravka has eclipsed Allan in our latest poll for the draw at Liverpool collecting 60% of the total vote. Allan did manage second in the poll for his performance which kept Liverpool on their toes. Joe Willock, with another dramatic late goal, comes in third.

That’s just your assumption tho mate. He has been posting pictures for a lot longer than any affiliation with our club.

He isnt purposely winding any fans up, the fans are winding themselves up

I’m on a mini break and played golf yesterday at Burnham and Berrow, in their seniors open with 3 mates. Fabulous day on a beautiful links course! Surprisingly we scored quite well which was a bonus!

Argh just realised no Willock this weekend for us as he can’t play against his parent club.

Who is going to score our 93rd minute winner!

I see a certain so called know it all is advising Joe Willock to return to Arsenil instead of staying in toon, typically another twist of the knife from the same Arsewipe.

I think if Arsenal keep Arteta for next season we will probably get to keep Willock as he will need to raise transfer funds

Arteta likes to keep possession where I feel Willock actually suits a counter attacking team for the late runs into the box

If they get a new manager in though they might want to take another look at him which would be bad news for us I imagine

Or the other alternative is we decide to cheap out and not buy him or pay for a loan again

Would anyone take Armstrong back next season?

Was thinking he would maybe be a good backup striker his playing style is a bit similar to Danny Ings albeit a poorer version

Means we could ship out Gayle and get a much fitter backup striker

The other Toon player in the pic has also made a huge difference to the team…

    Paul Dummett.

His speed at covering the flanks and defensive ability has allowed Ritchie to get further up the field where he has done some great work along with Murphy on the other side.

It is noticeable that Murphy has had to do far more tracking back and defensive tackles/clearances than Ritchie because we don’t have the same pace ob the right of a a back three. Murphy has been an absolute star in that respect and he always puts a massive shift in.

    But, back to Dummett.

If ever there was an unsung ‘Mr Dependable’ in the team it’s him, our best out and out defender by a mile IMO.

    @Bills

I think as part of the back 3 Dummett is excellent he looks to be fully fit now and has even improved his quality on the ball recently

Its more Clark and Fernandez that give me the fear as both of them are prone to mistakes especially playing together

Dummet doesn’t have great deals of pace but he has immaculate timing of the challenge.

He gives them a slight gap and shows then down the line and as soon as they knock it past him he takes a couple of steps and puts in a big challenge.

He has to be one of the best 1v1 defenders in the league.

He has had games where he has had Sterling, Salah, Zaha etc all in his back pocket.

Great servant to the club who has found his position as part of a back 3.

    On Dubravka,

Well done he kept us in it. But we are fickle, we do forget that Darlow was our player of the season till he was replaced.

Monsieur Darlow, if you’re reading, a big thanks, you are as good at n.1.

I see comments about Dummett, also a very good defender. Fede, Lascelles, Clark, have all played their part here and there too. And, to not disappoint his n.1 fan (Essex?), Shelvey has done well as a creative CB too, when asked.

And how about our two best wing backs, Ritchie and Murphy? Simply brilliant in the games since they came back.

Conclusion: despite goals conceded, this is our best defensive unit – ever.

We need to fix the MF issue… Eg. Look how man u was transformed with one top addition.

    We need a deadly striker.
PS. I like Wilson and the fact he always plays with a smile.

Our two best players, you know them, will totally shine with a couple of additions.

And I’ve seen glimpses of a great player in, yes, Joel too :).

Sorry about all the positive stuff. One more: we’re totally safe with lots of games to play, which isn’t too usual these days.

So, let’s grumpily enjoy the ride 🙂

When 2 tribes go to war, a poem.

Regan, Regan, clever, witty, has charm,
But you better answer his questions,
Or you’ll end up with bodily harm.

It’s a trait he picked up in the Sweeny,
    To interrogate is his intention,
That makes him a bit of a meany.

Just see what he did to Jail,
Behind bars for as long as you could mention,
For not following the Ffl trail,
    And answering 2 bloody questions!

The blog has tremored and trembled,
At exactly where this was all leading
But they’ve kissed and made up and we’re humbled,
We can breathe and carry on reading.

I disagree about Dummett not having pace.

Last season or the one before a ball was knocked over our defence towards the corner flag and Salah ran onto it in loads of space. I can still see the look on his face when he turned to find Dummett had not only caught up with him but promptly took the ball off him and sped away.

I agree that his timing of the tackle and positional play is top notch but his pace has led to a ton of blocks and tackles in the box that are regularly pointed out by match commentators.

I have to shake my head when I see some on here calling him a Champs standard player and one who should be the first to be sold.

Can we just drop Joelinton now? He’s a detriment to the team.

The amount of attacks he ruins is crazy- I don’t know where this rubbish that he’s proven himself ” A decent PL player” has come from because it’s simply not true.

Don’t care about the price- just like Lewis- if you’re a negative for the team you don’t play. In all his time at the club I don’t think he’s ever had the ball fully under control- it just bobbles around under his feet till he runs into the opposition or kicks it behind a teammate to ruin a possible attack. He’s terrible and I don’t know why some people are desperately pretending otherwise.

    cyprus,

Good post and you are dead right about midfield, one top notch CM will make a huge difference to the squad.

On Jo, I have seen glimpses of what may have made him a target and whilst I think he could yet turn out to be a very good player I don’t think his style is cut out for the Prem. He is defo no CF and whilst he shows better out wide he doesn’t have the pace to exploit the extra space he gets there.

Unfortunately, after his fee and £70K/£80K five year contract I can’t see any club giving us or him what it would take to move him on.

Unless a new manager comes in and transforms him and don’t see him getting much game time next season if we sign another striker.

Was Dummett not clocked as one of the fastest in the league a few seasons ago? Think it was chasing Martial he caught a top speed that season

Similar to Lascalles they both take a bit to get started but once they are up and running are pretty fast for defenders

I think a defensive 3 of Schar for the play maker Lascalles holding it together in the middle and Dummett being a wall is the best blend of centre backs we have with Fernandez and Clark as the backup options

If we could get a little bit more mobility in the middle I think we would actually look decent all over the pitch as ASM, Wilson and Almiron in the attacking 3rd would be able to cause most teams problems if they had the midfield to back it up
