Bruce Refutes Willock’s Reported Price Tag And Reveals His Expectations For Summer Window

With Newcastle edging toward safety, the topic of the upcoming summer transfer window was broached during Steve Bruce’s press conference for Arsenal this morning.

While Bruce was adamant that 36 points were not enough and that there is still much work to do, he admitted to feeling a lot better than just a month ago when Newcastle were really in the thick of a relegation fight.

Newcastle have been steadily linked with a few players of late, such as Celtic’s Kristoffer Ajer, who could be one of our top targets this summer. However, Bruce again expressed his desire to bring Joe Willock back next season.

Bruce was quick to warn that the 21-year-old is an Arsenal player and conversations were still to be had. However, Bruce did throw doubt on recent reports that Willock’s price tag had been set at £20m saying the following:

“Journalists have put the price tag. Certainly, I don’t know where the supposed £20m price tag has come from.

“I think that’s the more pressing thing is that we have to have a conversation with Arsenal, and we have to respect the fact that he’s an Arsenal player, and he’s a young player too.

“So, we don’t even know if he’s available yet. So until we have those conversations with Arsenal?

“I do know that Joe’s enjoyed it here. Why wouldn’t he? The football world is talking about him. To get three in three, and coming on as a sub has got everybody talking about Joe Willock.

“He’s done very well for us as a really young lad, we’re delighted with him.”

As Bruce stated, it’s unclear whether Willock will even be available this summer. Arsenal may very well want to keep their young midfielder at the Emirates, and who would blame them?

However, since he’s getting first-team football, it may serve both Willock and Arsenal to allow him on another season-long loan at Newcastle next year. Bruce did confirm that Willock would be starting if that were to happen:

“If we can get him for next year, he won’t be a super-sub. I think he’ll be playing.”

Another loan deal may be all that Newcastle can afford this summer as transfer funds are expected to be limited. However, the coffers may not be completely dry. Bruce was asked about how plans for this summer were shaping up.

Bruce admitted that he didn’t expect much of a transfer kitty, however, he said would do his best to squeeze every last penny out of Ashley that he could. Here are Bruce’s expectations on the upcoming window:

“I’m sure every club will be scrutinizing a Bosman, for example. They’re always attractive for obvious reasons. Look you quietly plan ahead, of course, you do.

“I think with every club, the managers that I speak to have no doubt been hit badly financially, which is understandable when you consider the past year. We’re all going to have to cut our cloth.

“That’s always difficult. I have to understand, and all the supporters will understand to, that there won’t be millions and millions and millions of pounds spent this summer.

“We’re not alone in that. Up and down the country clubs have been struggling.

“We’ll see what we’ve got. It’s my job to batter down the door and get as much as I can and see what we can do.”

Bruce will be itching to tell us there’s no money in the kitty this year.

To be honest as a fan – I’m not thinking about new players coming in to the club at this time.

Once this season is done and the takeover issue is sorted one way or the other that’s when I’ll be thinking of new recruits!

    Good luck to Willock
    He’s been great for us
Sadly I’m guessing he don’t want to be part of the turds relegation circus

I know he probably has to say it regardless, but it’s never nice hearing about Bruce preparing for next season.

    TV money trousered
    Players sold money not reinvested
    Loan players and cheap replacements

They will probably let the clown take the flack till the transfer window closes then replace him
So the new manager can’t spend either

    The usual

I reckon that AC will be even more p!ssed off that he can’t get onto the pitch so he can justify his fee’s.

His body language I think shows that.

Brucie making it very clear that he is staying at SJP.

Toon fans have got that to look forward to.

No big money will be spent on Willock.

I don’t think anyone would be surprised if no money for transfers available. Covid has hit all clubs hard with fans missing, albeit we probably weren’t going to spend much anyway.
We will need to sell to generate cash and I just don’t think we can risk selling ASM , miggy or dubs in the hope replacements will be better. Sadly we’re stuck with Hendrick , sick note Fraser and Joe where’s his best position ( clue: at home) Linton .

I read somewhere that Carroll gets his full wage ( 75k ) if he is selected for the match day squad. He gets a basic of 35k if he’s injured and unavailable

Quite like shearer / wrighty on motd , both were terrible at first but have grown into it although, think I now prefer shearer / Richards and lineker – lots of banter and good to have someone younger on there.

High wages – that’s why players like to run down contracts and go on a free – opens up opportunity for more than they would have gotten

Frees can be diificult for clubs who have a wages structure or have players on contracts which says they get as much as highest paid player ( Shearer)

I’m torn like most fans – great when you get e “free” ( as long as good enough) but highly annoying when your players run contract down and so no transfer fee ( as Owen did with Liverpool and us0 or don’t want to go where they don’t fancy (Colback)

…. but was pre-Bosman any better?

Arguably landscape has changed considerably since those days with players (and agents) often paid more than managers

All transfers are great when they work but terrible when they don’t , we’ve had a fair few who ran contract down , didn’t Ba have a set transfer fee inserted into his contract when he joined us and we therefore had to let him go for peanuts. Was a bit annoyed the club agreed at the time as we were the only EPL team willing to take a chance on his dodgy knees

I haven’t been excited about possible transfers for many years now and as I’ve sai before look at the extensive “Runours” page on NUFC,com to see how realistic and therefore pointless they are

This year after Covid , The Hateful 6 and our limbo status in PL and ownership make it seem even more a “stick pin in a list of players” exercise

I loved watching podcasts, of away fans coming up here for the first time. The amazement, when they walk through the town a screen see the stadium, and the view from level seven in the SJH stand. It’s still a magnificent stadium, but definitely needs some renovations.
