In January, when Newcastle were on the prowl for a midfielder to add to the ranks, Huddersfield’s Lewis O’Brien was named as a potential target.
At the time, it was thought that Huddersfield could be forced to cash in on their Academy product due to his contract running out in 2022. However, it’s since come to light that Huddersfield may have an option to extend him to 2023.
The 22-year-old has excelled for Huddersfield over the past few seasons despite their struggles in the Championship. The Terriers may have a fight on their hands in holding on to O’Brien this summer.
The Sun is reporting that Newcastle are still interested in the tenacious midfielder. However, he may only be targetted if a deal for Joe Willock to return next season cannot be agreed with Arsenal.
The report cites Arsenal’s ยฃ20m valuation of Willock as being too much for Newcastle this summer. Bruce denied that Newcastle had been quoted that amount for Willock. During his press conference this morning, he seemed to be referencing another loan deal for the 21-year-old.
But if nothing can be worked out, O’Brien may be seen as a cheaper alternative at a reported ยฃ4m. He is the type of player, though without top-flight experience, who would add something to Newcastle’s midfield in that he can carry the ball forward and create while also being a ball-winner.
So while the prevailing hope is to get Willock back next season in some capacity, O’Brien is a promising young midfielder who has some versatility. He also may fit the Mike Ashley profile more than Southampton’s Mario Lemina, who could be available for ยฃ7m this summer should Fulham not take up their purchase option.

Comment #47Bass, would agree to disagree re earlier points. Bruce is awful and no doubt Bรณnna has influenced things. But any manager is going to say, logically, that they will do better when their top players come back. Rafa was always quick to point how the likes of Liverpool were hard to beat, and we needed to be defensive, because of the calibre of their squad. Stands to reason. And similarly that we would have more reasons to be optimistic with maxi Wilson back. But I fully agree that much of the mess is Bruce generated, eg sheff utd and West brom.

The thing which bothers me with them Sheff Utd and Brighton performances, as much as I want to forget them I just can’t shift them.
I keep thinking that under Bruce we’re always only a week away from possibly another showing like that.

Comment #53Uncertain that rings a bell as well, it all became a bit blurry as there used to be offers on triple spirits, sometimes didn’t bother with the coke etc and yes they were very good times, think last time I was there Hartlepool were in the play off final so me and me 2 brothers decided to support them for the afternoon.

Comment #55Lot of loan players from out of the past mentioned.
Problem with some is that they were always on that basis i.e. loan and not for sale or at an exorbitent fee if from likes of Chelsea
It’s their business model – snap up loads of young talent that you can’t possibly play, loan out for a fee and get them match practice and see how they develop, decide if they are now good enough for first team if not get as much money as possible then go and buy more young players……..
Viv Busby I remember – from Fulham, SuperMac’s partner there but we already had John Tudor here and in those days didn’t have big squads
Canny player and would have liked him to stay not sure about his looks though will take carltoon’s word for it
Liked Kenedy but think we missed a bullet there but we were able to get Joelinton later with the money we saved ๐

Thinking of Saha I always remember him for that goal against Blackburn. Hamann put a great ball over the top for Saha to hit it on the half volley left foot across the keeper in the bottom corner, put us in the Quarters that.
Hamann was a top player that only season he played in.
