Report – Bruce Hopes To Add Another Impact Loan Signing During Scarce Summer

With Newcastle now just a couple of results away from safety, the topic of the summer transfer window was touched on during Steve Bruce’s press conference yesterday.

While expectations are low due to the financial impact of playing behind closed doors, Bruce vowed to ‘batter down the door’ to get as much as he can.

Whether Bruce can persuade Ashley for a second straight summer to loosen the purse strings remains a major doubt. The transfer budget was halved last year due to the impact of the coronavirus but there were still significant funds to work with.

Ashley backed his head coach bringing in Callum Wilson and Jamal Lewis for £35m. Signings like this are highly unlikely this summer which could be the case throughout the Premier League.

Though The Chronicle has a report stating that Bruce may be able to get one big signing through the door. This is what Mark Douglas writes in his article:

The business case is simple: if United hadn’t have been able to count on Wilson’s goals this season they would have been relegated.

There’s a belief that maybe one signing of that size could be brokered to keep Newcastle ticking while the takeover situation is resolved.

No matter how much Bruce pleads, a signing in the £20m range has to be extremely unlikely. However, that doesn’t mean Newcastle can’t freshen up the squad in certain areas through loans and free agents.

Newcastle could also generate some cash flow by offloading a few players. Both Yoshinori Muto and Florian Lejeune will return from their loan spells in Spain with their futures very much in doubt. While they won’t command large fees, they may be put up for sale with their contracts due to expire in 2022.

Karl Darlow could also do with a change of scenery. While Karl has served Newcastle impeccably well, he’s proven that he should be a number one goalkeeper. That’s just not going to happen for him at Newcastle, so maybe a move will benefit both the player and the club with Freddie Woodman due to return from his latest loan at Swansea.

The Chronicle also reports that Newcastle will attempt to bring in another player on loan ‘to replicate the impact’ of Joe Willock. The midfielder is likely Newcastle’s top target next summer though Arsenal have not made their minds up on the 21-year-old just yet.

A player Bruce has worked with before could fill the other domestic loan slot. According to Douglas, Bruce has asked to be kept in the loop on Tammy Abraham’s situation at Chelsea. Recent reports have Chelsea looking to cash in on the striker for £40m.

Newcastle couldn’t afford that fee or Abraham’s wage demands. However, both Newcastle and West Ham are cited as potential ‘escape routes’ for the 23-year-old who has fallen out of favor at Stamford Bridge since the arrival of Thomas Tuchel.

Bruce brought Abraham in on loan when he was at Aston Villa in 2018, though it was short-lived as he was sacked that October. Abraham has been named as a potential target of Newcastle throughout the years.

So maybe, a year-long loan could work out for all parties if Chelsea are unable to find any takers at their asking price. Getting Abraham and Willock in next summer would be decent business, though still seems like a long shot at this point.

Totally agree he definitely has a lot to answer for. He gets off scot free nowadays with Ashley taking the limelight but he certainly played his part.

    It’s weird watching this.

Leeds who are usually all attack are struggling, against Brighton’s solid defence.

Brighton, who are usually bad going forward are looking good against Leeds dodgy defence.

Leeds need a goal. Brighton are happy @ 1-0.

Personally, I wouldn’t go near Tammy Abraham. Not only did he previously turn down a loan to us, he’s also not that good.

Toney with 30 goals and Armstrong with 26. I’d love to hear from Rafa why he let them both go.

Just watched the Brighton game, they played Leeds off the park, should have scored a lot more if they had decent strikers imo, I posted back in November that Potter is an excellent manager and would love him to manage us, he knows how to play from back to front and talks a lot of sense etc.. He will end up at a top, top class club believe you me, IMO, Come on Chelsea……

Brighton made the mistake of signing that crap Man Utd striker. If he was crap at Man Utd and Arsenal he’s not suddenly going to get good at Brighton.

Dave Bassett, yeah your right , watched them a load this season, they create loads of chances, they just cannot finish etc… if they could afford a Chris Woods or a Ivan Toney, Adam Armstrong type striker they would have a decent side, imo. Cheers

Annoys me how the loan system is and has to be exploited for the benefit of the greedy clubs but also likes of Fulhan with 6 loans!

Uefa should limit but of course the greedy clubs won’t like it!

Saying Bruce deserves 17th is very petty, I mean at this stage of the season does it matter where we finish, as long as it 17th up over.
And for the record, Rafa was just as poor as Bruce, though you don’t want to hear it

Stopping loan system might seem harsh for clubs including us but with money in PL I think it’s wrong that loans are allowed and should be for Championship and below – but clubs there might reasonably make a similar argument

Stopping them would i think have an effect on clubs hoovering up all the young talent to the detriment of “poorer” clubs if they can’t get them loaned out for competitive football

This would lead to more realistic transfer fees allowing likes of us to compete for them if not the big nameswhich are already finished article and develop as our players and sell if forced

Bigger clubs have always grabbed talent fron lesser clubs even before PL was formed but it meant money actually filtered down the leagues and through teams in respective league

Just another closed shop which the greedy clubs want in their favour

Big difference is Rafa had a net spend – bruce on the other hand has had at least 60 million even allowing for the sale of Perez
No comparison. Some of Rafa football wasnt great but there was always a plan for the game and a plan to improve season upon season
