Almiron, Ritchie, And Wilson Get Starts Against Arsenal

This is the team Steve Bruce has named for this afternoon’s match against Arsenal. It has one change from the draw at Anfield with Callum Wilson back in the starting eleven.

Newcastle Starting XI: Dubravka, Murphy, Fernandez, Clark, Dummett, Ritchie, Shelvey, S Longstaff, Almiron, Saint-Maximin, Wilson

Subs: Gillespie, Schar, Anderson, Joelinton, Gayle, Lewis, Hendrick, Krafth, M Longstaff

Bruce pulls no surprises with his team selection this afternoon. He’s selected a very strong team with Wilson back in for Joelinton.

Andy Carroll and Javier Manquillo are surprise commissions in the squad. Both Elliot Anderson and Matty Longstaff return to the bench for just the second time since February.

Here is who Mikel Arteta for the Gunners with Alexandre Lacazette and Kiernan Tierney ruled out.

Arsenal Starting XI: Ryan, Bellerin, David Luiz, Gabriel, Xhaka, Elneny, Ceballos, Willian, Odegaard, Martinelli, Aubameyang

Subs: Leno, Mari, Chambers, Cedric, Partey, Smith Rowe, Saka, Pepe, Nketiah

Newcastle have an outstanding opportunity to practically clinch safety with a win today. Arsenal have little to play for domestically with a big match in the Europa League on the horizon.

Let’s hope Newcastle can continue with the good performances and keep our unbeaten run alive. Keeping this consistency down the stretch while avoiding any massive pitfalls could see us finish this topsy-turvy season on this rise.

Howay The Lads!

So, Bruceyboy’s claiming that Ashley and Charnley’s full backing focused the players minds and helped him put things right post Brighton? By implication, he’s saying that backing was unconditional.

I think it’s fair to say that by picking fights with and not playing key players, Bruce had contributed to the woeful performances pre and post Christmas.

Had I been in Charnley’s shoes and having brought in Jones to help, I’d have been sufficiently assertive to tell Bruceyboy in no uncertain terms that the Club’s continued backing is conditional upon him building bridges with the players, using Jones to full advantage, stop playing the big boss and get results.

It goes without saying that Bruceyboy’d tell that to the media.

    2-1 to the Toon.
Need to get onto Luiz – he is slow and will foul. Dirty player.

In the last six games we have a point more than Arsenal – so they are not playing that well.

PEA needs to be marked well.

If Fraser’s had surgery, it’ll have been exploratory, trying to find the cause of the Chronic Inertia he’s suffered from.

9 “flirting with relegation”? Go take a look at the PL table, then get back to me. Are you forgetting there will be another relegation battle to think about next season?

Although, that said, imagine the glory of beating Arsenal today — one for the history books. Top 15 beckons!!

This reminds me of Pardew, absolutely no long-term plan for the team or playing a definitive dominant style. Just pick the best team for the day, and try to put in a plucky performance.

There’ll never be a better time to give younger players a run out… especially with the stadiums empty.

Shelvey Almiron and Longstaff are redundant in this formation.

Spend 90 mins chasing shadows hoping to get a block in.
