Bruce Laments Below Par Performance As An Opportunity Is Missed Against The Gunners

A disappointed Steve Bruce has spoken to NUFC TV after today’s 2-0 defeat at home against Arsenal.

It was a self-destructive start as the Magpies were stagnant out of the box. Arsenal immediately pounced on the passive Magpies and found their breakthrough very early in the match.

Bruce wanted to take advantage of Arsenal’s congested schedule with them competing in Europe mid-week. However, the lads failed to show up and were soon down 1-0 in the opening minutes.

This was Bruce’s take on today’s proceedings:

“Sometimes you have to hold your hands up as Arsenal were better than us on the day. We knew to beat Arsenal we had to play well. We had to match where we’ve been and unfortunately we weren’t.

“The goal after four minutes set us back because the one thing we wanted to do was to start aggressively, be on the front foot against them because let’s be fair, they’ve been all over Europe this week.”

Newcastle showed very little in the first half as they struggled to fashion any chances. However, it wasn’t a complete collapse like we’ve seen on occasion this season. Newcastle were basically outplayed and outcoached and had no answers to turn the game around.

The second half was marginally better but Arsenal keeper Mathew Ryan was rarely ever tested. When the Gunners bagged their second goal, the sails went completely limp for the Magpies until very late in the match when they pushed forward with four strikers on the pitch.

Bruce said the following about our lack of a threat in the final third:

“Just after halftime, I thought we had our best spell of the game. But unfortunately, they went up the other end of the pitch and scored.

“We huffed and puffed all afternoon. We didn’t really have that penetration going forward like we have had of late.

“I thought Allan (Saint-Maximin) did all his best work too deeply. He went searching for the ball in deeper areas which is something we can work on and keep him higher up the pitch.”

Finally, Bruce bemoaned the lost opportunity today. A win would have seen Newcastle up to 13th in the table and 12 points clear of Fulham. However, the performance was nowhere near good enough for a result.

Bruce said the following when asked about getting as many points as possible to close the season:

“Of course, we have to. The disappointing thing for me is we could have been 13th today.

“We knew we had to play well. We didn’t. We didn’t play well enough to beat a very good Arsenal team on the day.”

    Think on it lads –

In how many games where we had a more than decent chance to make a difference this season did we take it?

and I’ll give you a clue it’s not many

    Cautionary tale…

Just had a text off 22.

He’s not feeling too good today, ran out of beer last night and started on the hand sanitiser.

    Explains a lot.

Evening folks. All week a lot of our fans were super confident we would get a good result today, i personally couldn`t understand why they were so confident, i mean lets be honest Liverpool could easily been 5 or 6 up at half time, and on another day they would have been, i think it might have been Optimistic Prime who said as much as he also was looking at the performance rather than the result, unless your really biased i think you will agree it was a total fluke getting a draw with Liverpool. Today was a true reflection of where we are at, we were up against what was basically the Arsenal second team, and they give us a football lesson and out classed us in every part of the pitch. We only have 4 premier league standard players who are Dubravka, Almiron, Wilson, and Saint Maximin, the rest are simply not fit for purpose. There is a big difference in a premier league players, and players playing in the premier league who are just imposters.

Do you still harbour fears of relegation? I don’t see either Fulham or West Brom winning 3/4 more games this season

Even though ive had huge contempt for Manure all my life, i have begrudging respect for what they did today against their owners, its obvious they hate their owners just as much as we hate Ashley, but at least they took action. I have always said Newcastle have the best and most loyal fans in the business, and they have beyond doubt, but in a strange way our greatest strength is also our greatest weakness against Ashley and he knows he can do anything he likes and our fans wont take any decisive action against him unfortunately sad but true. One thing for sure Ashley would not have lasted a year to 18 months at Man Utd or Liverpool or Chelsea, their fans would never have put up with a blood sucking parasite like Ashley.

I think both have won 5 games this season (or around there) so would need to have an almighty upturn to trouble us again. I think Fulham are shot now despite what Parker says and West Brom are just hitting and hoping at the minute but that won’t last

I personally think we are safe now and I expect us to get another 4 points minimum regardless

Agree the season has been another terrible one but without someone buying the clubs it’ll be more the same next season sadly

We could easily be the team that loses its last 5 games, so it could still be close. If we lose the next 2, which we will, and Fulham/WBA pick up the odd win, the pressure will be cranked up for the Sheff Utd game. And then we have Fulham. How can any of us truly trust this manager and team to save themselves.

I will say this for joelinton: Did Wilson look like he had any chance of being an England international today?

A lot of joelinton’s problems are Newcastle’s problems. Not enough space & not enough options. that said; he’s not good enough for a top team. But then again only Saint Max, Dubs & maybe Dummett. yes, dummett. are the only ones i see who could play for a top 6 club

Good evening mate, today was totally embarrassing getting outclassed by Arsenal is one thing, but getting outclassed by an Arsenal second string is simply not acceptable, everyone needs to forget about Bruce, he is only the monkey, nothing will ever change to the organ grinder is gone mate.

The Mighty Wyn, Keith Patterson from NCSL alluded to it on Friday night it’s an exclusive he’s given to Liam Kennedy and he has said if it gets printed this week then that’s OK but if it doesn’t then the takeover is further on than anyone thought.

We traditionally lose to this team so we should have expected this.

The chasm between such teams and us is sizable. Their “rejects” are our starlets.

    Did we learn anything else?

Wilson isn’t fully firing yet, Joel would’ve done better.

    And, we’re 17th for a reason.

Finally, ASM: what a player. Diamond in the rough, they were scared of him! Needs work, but could be a world beater.
