Bruce Laments Below Par Performance As An Opportunity Is Missed Against The Gunners

A disappointed Steve Bruce has spoken to NUFC TV after today’s 2-0 defeat at home against Arsenal.

It was a self-destructive start as the Magpies were stagnant out of the box. Arsenal immediately pounced on the passive Magpies and found their breakthrough very early in the match.

Bruce wanted to take advantage of Arsenal’s congested schedule with them competing in Europe mid-week. However, the lads failed to show up and were soon down 1-0 in the opening minutes.

This was Bruce’s take on today’s proceedings:

“Sometimes you have to hold your hands up as Arsenal were better than us on the day. We knew to beat Arsenal we had to play well. We had to match where we’ve been and unfortunately we weren’t.

“The goal after four minutes set us back because the one thing we wanted to do was to start aggressively, be on the front foot against them because let’s be fair, they’ve been all over Europe this week.”

Newcastle showed very little in the first half as they struggled to fashion any chances. However, it wasn’t a complete collapse like we’ve seen on occasion this season. Newcastle were basically outplayed and outcoached and had no answers to turn the game around.

The second half was marginally better but Arsenal keeper Mathew Ryan was rarely ever tested. When the Gunners bagged their second goal, the sails went completely limp for the Magpies until very late in the match when they pushed forward with four strikers on the pitch.

Bruce said the following about our lack of a threat in the final third:

“Just after halftime, I thought we had our best spell of the game. But unfortunately, they went up the other end of the pitch and scored.

“We huffed and puffed all afternoon. We didn’t really have that penetration going forward like we have had of late.

“I thought Allan (Saint-Maximin) did all his best work too deeply. He went searching for the ball in deeper areas which is something we can work on and keep him higher up the pitch.”

Finally, Bruce bemoaned the lost opportunity today. A win would have seen Newcastle up to 13th in the table and 12 points clear of Fulham. However, the performance was nowhere near good enough for a result.

Bruce said the following when asked about getting as many points as possible to close the season:

“Of course, we have to. The disappointing thing for me is we could have been 13th today.

“We knew we had to play well. We didn’t. We didn’t play well enough to beat a very good Arsenal team on the day.”

When we played Everton we pressed from the outset, they never settled and we won. Attributed to Jones.

If you can stand it watch the game again, especially the first half. It was as though the players had been told to keep at least 3m away from the opponent with the ball. The Arsenal players had all the time in the world to get their heads up and pick a pass. Hardly a tackle, we only got to touch the ball when it went into our area.

Our next two games will result in zero points.
Fulham have Burnley and Southampton could easily pick up 6 points
West Brom have Wolves Arsenal and Liverpool
    Could pick up 3 points
Which leaves us worse scenario going into the Sheffield United game 3 points above Fulham who’ll be playing Man Utd – owt could happen – so boils down to us beating Sheffield Utd to stay up as we will get nowt at Fulham

    Sky News
Gary Neville has blamed Manchester United owners the Glazer family for Sunday’s fan protests, and urged them to put the club up for sale.

No one will buy them just pay off £400million debt.

The EPL can’t sanction any PIF interest.

Best bet is for them to collapse I to receivership.

Ashley having sold NUFC can ride into town and snap them up for £1.

    Perfect outcome.

With the risk of relegation looming Ashley would based on past decisions needs to sack the three Steves let anyone called Graham be caretaker manager.

When he retires will he get a wooden spoon from the PL?

I see 4 points minimum before end of the season and potentially 7. Don’t think we actually need more points to stay up though

I don’t see why people fear Fulham and West Brom so much, maybe I am more optimistic than I thought haha

I know we’ll blame the match going fans again, GET OFF YA backsides and go and invade the ground , do something instead of moaning. I’m up for it, there’s no one willing to do anything, Genjiki was the only one to protest, every home game,

Bruce is poor its true but Parker and Big Sam are no better. Difference is Bruce needs 1 win (if that) where as the others need 100% record from now until the end of the season

Realistically I see us as having an upper bottom half squad, and a bottom third coaching set up, improved maybe 10% by the addition of Bonna. The biggest problem I have with Bruce is that he carries on as if we should accept it, and get behind it, and that is just impossible to understand, given the 14 years we’ve had of this owner, and Steve Bruce’s own Geordie roots. He needs to push for more from the owner and he needs to make sure the side turns up every week and it just doesn’t happen. He’s not done the job he needs to do, from a fan’s perspective, and he doesn’t seem to fully realize it. Can’t side with the owner, particularly one who won’t push the club, and he can’t send out teams only ready to play second fiddle, and have any hope of getting the backing from fans he needs. How can he not see that?

Schar has a quite obvious discipline problem. His emotions run away with him. I like him, sometimes he’s top top class, but we see recklessness from him and poor positional play at times, and for sure it’s a weakness in a player who otherwise could play for a top ten side. You’re not at all in control getting sent off in the 90th minute, in your comeback game, after months out, with only four games left, 2 nil down, game gone, survival not yet fully secured and needing match fitness to get in the starting 11 for your country at a major International tournament.

    Moonraker slot 40

That’s exactly what I said during the game, Bruce has consistently this season and last set up against the so called ‘big six’ on name and name only.

He’s seen the word ‘Arsenal’ a few minutes before the game (the time he usually does his in depth analysis of the opposition) and instantly thought “jeez, they once had that invincible season, there’s no way we can win this”

He then proceeds to set up as if we’re going to get battered from the outset with his (might as well be) six at the back formation and we offer absolutely nothing going forward apart from the odd Maxi magic moment.

Why doesn’t he look at previous results and see that Arse have been shocking this season and look crumbly as hell at the back with sideshow Luiz and that calamity Xhaka clown steaming into tackles and dropping bollocks all over the shop.

Wouldn’t it be bloody amazing to have a manager with a big stinking hairy set of stones that treats every match as winnable and doesn’t just roll over and die before the games even kicked off.

I’m thinking of that leeds mancity game down to 10 men and still piling forward to win the game.

Some of these fans of other clubs don’t know how bastard lucky they are seriously.

The Schar incident is bizarre, as you say he needs PL game time to secure international selection for this summer. Perhaps s lack of preparation and game time prior to today contributed to his ill judged/timed challenge, but I agree he suffers from a bit of red mist at times.
