Bruce Admits ‘Big Decisions’ Needed On Current Squad As Survival Remains Paramount

Newcastle suffered a setback yesterday against Arsenal as they failed to capitalize on a golden chance of smothering Fulham’s survival hopes. A win and Newcastle would have been twelve points clear with just four matches remaining. Fulham would have had to run the table for any chance of survival.

However, that chance has gone wasted, and barring an unlikely win at Leicester on Friday, Newcastle will have to keep one eye on Fulham’s next few fixtures. So the apprehensive wait for survival, while still very likely, nonetheless lingers on.

The poor showing yesterday aside, Newcastle still must press with at least preliminary planning for this summer. Some targets seem to have been identified and there are plenty of decisions to be rendered with the current squad.

Newcastle have a few players out of contract this summer and others entering the final year of their deals. So there’s quite a bit to do over the next few months even with the expectation that the transfer budget will be paltry at best.

Steve Bruce spoke a little about the contract situation with some of his players after yesterday’s defeat against the Gunners. It seems that much of the focus is on clinching survival before certain decisions are made.

This is what Bruce said about Fabian Schar’s future along with the current thinking on contract extensions as published in The Northern Echo:

“With Fab Schar, I think there’s a clause in his contract where we can extend it. I believe that’s the case.

“With all of those decisions, there’s obviously discussions to be had when the season is done and dusted. We’re not done and dusted yet, but of course, there are big, difficult decisions to make.

“In every football club, that’s part and parcel of it. Yes, we’ve got some big decisions to make.”

    Missing poster update

Must be a month since The Rev Jim was last seen heading out for a bike ride.

If he took the East coast route up to John o Groats I reckon he’s now somewhere in the Trossachs heading South on his round Britain challenge.

I think this time it has become so transparent, if proof were ever needed, how Ashley has absolutely zero ambition for the club. The active removal of Rafa succeeded by the appointment of the truly shocking, awfully bad Bruce was just the latest in the never ending list of 2 fingered salutes aimed at the fans.

Against that backdrop and bearing in mind some of us have been following NUFC for over 50 years, then I think it’s entirely anyone’s right to say there is a tipping point and enough is enough.

If the future is Ashley and Bruce and the aim is to finish 17th each season then really what is the point any more? The top 6 will always be catered to by the likes of Masters and Hoffman with vested self interests while the ”also rans” contend with annual relegation battles, z list managers and moving on our very few sellable players.

If takeover happens, it’s the answer to all our prayers. If not, anyone who says they’ve had enough gets every sympathy from me.

On the subject of tea….. Wor Lesh only buys unbranded tea due to his communist principals . He reckons buying proper tea is a theft.
Sorry Lesh me old chum, you’ve had a fair bit of stick this morning but you know I adore you really.
Don’t forget communist jokes are only funny if everyone gets it.

Did anyone watch the West Brom Wolves game last night? Very entertaining!

I have never seen us attack teams the way that West Brom have done recently under Bruce even Big Sam has got his team playing better than us!

Perreira looks a great little player for them always creating chances him on one wing with ASM would be pretty exciting

Probably relegated now though as they really needed to win that

I agree if the takeover doesn’t happen now then you would be daft to pay for a season ticket or a normal ticket under Ashley and Bruce

I normally try get to a couple of games a season travelling down from Glasgow and by the time you include train fares, day out, hotel etc it works out just as expensive as a season ticket!!

But I certainly would not be in a rush to see a Bruce team next season

I can’t remember a more boring weekend of premier league football?

    Title is over
    Relegation is all but over
And nobody gives two hoots if West Ham manage to make the top 4

When you have a manager come out and say ”we are where we are and we have to accept it” I absolutely despair.

Bruce and Ashley is a marriage made in hell they are perfect for each other!!

Neither has any ambition and are quite happy to chug along with the club not competing as long as they get money from it!

This summer all you will hear from Bruce is how he will be trying to get improvements and that its a difficult window then boom by the time the window closes thanking Ashley for the bare minimum AGAIN!
