Newcastle Have Work To Do But Top Defensive Targets Seem To Have Been Identified

Newcastle still have some work to do to seal our place in the Premier League for next season. An opportunity was wasted on Sunday against Arsenal to put more daylight between Fulham with just four matches remaining.

Now we must keep an eye on how the Cottagers fare against Burnley on Monday. The Clarets lost 2-1 to West Ham at Turf Moor last night and also hold a 9 point-edge over Fulham.

Still, Newcastle remain in a comfortable position with the onus on Fulham to produce a miracle. Stranger things have happened and this is Newcastle we are talking about.

But a few results on our end can put the matter to rest. Hopefully, we’ll do that, or Fulham fail in their quest, before the season finale at Craven Cottage in just under three weeks.

Planning for next season must go forth even with safety only tickling our fingertips, so close but still not grasped. There’s plenty of decisions to prepare for over the coming weeks.

One of the areas that is likely to be addressed is center-back. Newcastle have a glut at the position with many players nearing the end of their contracts. The bulk of the group is also at or approaching the age of 30.

Contract decisions need to be made with younger defenders likely topping our summer wishlist. A couple of center-backs have already been linked with Celtic’s Kristoffer Ajer capturing much of the headlines.

Newcastle reportedly had scouts watching the 23-year-old on Sunday. It wasn’t the Norwegian’s best display in the 4-1 loss to Rangers but he’s been one of their best players since joining five years ago.

Another center-back on the radar is Danilho Doekhi of Vitesse. The 22-year-old was touted as a potential summer target a few weeks ago.

Sport Witness has recently cited a report in the Dutch press of Newcastle’s interest in the Dutch U21 international. Both Rangers and Italy’s Atalanta are also said to be tracking Doekhi.

So Newcastle seem to have a couple of promising targets identified to strengthen and refresh the backline. That interest may ramp up once safety is guaranteed, which we hope will be in within the next couple of weeks.

Mike Ashley’s Frasers Group has announced plans to buy up £60m of shares, despite warning less than a month ago that it would suffer a £200m hit from the pandemic.

“The purpose of the programme is to reduce the share capital of the company,” it said https://telegraph.co.uk/business/2021/05/04/frasers-buys-60m-shares-despite-covid-blow/

What a horrible frekin day, looks like i stuck in the hoose again.

I don`t normally read stuff on the TO but this article`s headline caught my eye.
I don`t have Sky so it`s probably old hat , and i guess many posters would of watched Soccer Saturday last weekend.
Pundits are taking the piss out of us, even Stelling

A previous post mentioned how even West Brom play more attacking football than us, and of course it is true, i think everyone does.
As it stands at the minute though, West Brom have no choice but to go on the offensive, every game, they are desperate for the 3 points and you only achieve that by scoring goals.

It only kicked off with us because it was actively encouraged by Hoffman, the puppet on the strings of (Bein) Qatar. He was informed at the time that they would not renew the contract for the Premier league rights if the PIF were passed through due to the local spat that was ensuing at the time and the fact BeoutQ were showing PL games illegally. And there was no way at the time that the PIF could offer to pay for the rights as that would have been seen as a bribe ( funny ain’t it) at the time and probably used as an excuse to have the PIF disqualified from the O&D tests.

Date for your calendars- Saturday 15th May, Fulham unable to win @ Southampton makes us mathematically safe!

    You heard it here 1st.

Ron your right, but I fancy a draw @this one, not enough for Fulham having also failed to beat Burnley this coming weekend.

Of course if Southampton are in flip flop mode, anything can happen – the beauty of football, and as I said, my tipping is amongst the worlds worst, based on my Super 6 attempts. Haha 😆

    geordietom,

Im disappointed in Stelling , he seems to be grounded in his thinking, and as a Hartlepool fan he knows all about the passion of north east supporters.
Merson is a moron, i`d expect that sort of BS from him.
Just goes to show though, this TO is no longer taken seriously by anyone other than Toon fans, and is regularly the brunt of jokes .
I hope at some point we can wipe the smirk off their faces.

    geordietom,

I read all of that too but my point is we are now the brunt of jokes all over the knot end, maybe Stelling needed to balance things up a bit on live tv by mentioning the greedy 6 but i can imagine we are the brunt of pundits jokes from all corners, and we as the fans will be at the centre of it.

Interesting results (if they’re accurate), Joelinton clocked faster than Wilson and ASM surprisingly low down the list.

Your guess is as good as anyone’s sadly, honestly think it’s a 3 way tie between good news, bad news or underwhelming news. Just have to keep fingers crossed that it’s good news if it does come out.
