Newcastle Have Work To Do But Top Defensive Targets Seem To Have Been Identified

Newcastle still have some work to do to seal our place in the Premier League for next season. An opportunity was wasted on Sunday against Arsenal to put more daylight between Fulham with just four matches remaining.

Now we must keep an eye on how the Cottagers fare against Burnley on Monday. The Clarets lost 2-1 to West Ham at Turf Moor last night and also hold a 9 point-edge over Fulham.

Still, Newcastle remain in a comfortable position with the onus on Fulham to produce a miracle. Stranger things have happened and this is Newcastle we are talking about.

But a few results on our end can put the matter to rest. Hopefully, we’ll do that, or Fulham fail in their quest, before the season finale at Craven Cottage in just under three weeks.

Planning for next season must go forth even with safety only tickling our fingertips, so close but still not grasped. There’s plenty of decisions to prepare for over the coming weeks.

One of the areas that is likely to be addressed is center-back. Newcastle have a glut at the position with many players nearing the end of their contracts. The bulk of the group is also at or approaching the age of 30.

Contract decisions need to be made with younger defenders likely topping our summer wishlist. A couple of center-backs have already been linked with Celtic’s Kristoffer Ajer capturing much of the headlines.

Newcastle reportedly had scouts watching the 23-year-old on Sunday. It wasn’t the Norwegian’s best display in the 4-1 loss to Rangers but he’s been one of their best players since joining five years ago.

Another center-back on the radar is Danilho Doekhi of Vitesse. The 22-year-old was touted as a potential summer target a few weeks ago.

Sport Witness has recently cited a report in the Dutch press of Newcastle’s interest in the Dutch U21 international. Both Rangers and Italy’s Atalanta are also said to be tracking Doekhi.

So Newcastle seem to have a couple of promising targets identified to strengthen and refresh the backline. That interest may ramp up once safety is guaranteed, which we hope will be in within the next couple of weeks.

Joelinton can run! Unfortunately he doesn’t know how to run with a ball, nor shoot, nor trap a ball, nor heed the ball!
I wish he would run away!

Our little mini run of decent results was with Joelinton in the team. He came out of the team against Arsenal and well….we know how that went. Just a thought 😉

Moonraker, not relying on them winning, just getting a point.

At this moment in time, we have the luxury (haha, don’t make me laugh) of being in the position whereby a point anywhere, is great for us, if we can, but useless to either WBA or Fulham, it’s wins or goodbye time for both. 🙂

Mund I see them bringing that list out as things definitely going back to normal, you don’t get one of the worlds biggest brands doing that unless they know something.

You know there is something in that Joelinton is really good at intercepting one of our hoofs and seems to be able to keep the ball occasionally from them

Wilson seems to struggle with that side of the game hes far better with the ball played to his feet or into space for him to run into

In hindsight maybe we should have started with the same team as against Liverpool and brought Wilson on after 55 minutes, I still don’t think he looks 100%.

Fulham can lose to Saints and still overtake us by winning their other 3 games and we lose 4. If they don’t get 3 points from their next 2 matches they are down, assuming we keep losing of course.

Yeah they should get a point. Problem is I don’t think we’ll get anything from the next 2, Leicester and Man City! So theoretically Fulham can still catch us!
    What a sh!t season it’s been.
    We need that takeover!

What a sorry state we’ve come to when I get more excitement from watching matches in which our rivals struggle. I have become a supporter of West Ham, Wolves and Chelsea for 95 minutes in recent days. This will continue for our next 2 matches unless we conjure something up against Leicester or City.
Jeff is a supporter/defender of ours in the media. There are precious few of them, so enjoy him whilst he’s still there!

    Carson,

No chance mate, he couldn`t motivate a good Villa squad to even a play off spot when he was there so god knows how we would end up without our better players in the champo.
I still say though it is a poor lge, you just have to look at the 3 that went down last season to see that.

    LCBP,

I think Joelinton is definitely underappreciated a fair bit I think, he has some awful games don’t get me wrong but link play gets unrecognised quite a bit. Like you say he seems to be able to link up some hopeful hoofs up field sometimes. Maybe him coming out of the team isn’t the reason for the change in performance against Arsenal, but food for thought.

For me if we could get rid of and upgrade the following:

    Fernandez
    Lejuene
    Shelvey
    Hendrick
    Atsu
    Carroll

Basically all of them are getting too old and too slow for the premiership

At this moment in time i think it`s just as hard a game against a team desperate to survive as it is against a team trying for a europa lge spot so Fulham still have their work cut out.
I think they have gone, does anyone think Burnley, who are on the same points as us, will roll over for them, nah, nor do i.

We have basically went from Ashley “no premiership experience or anyone over the age of 24” to having one of the oldest squads in the league with Bruce no doubt still wanting to sign more experienced players

Eventually that catches up with you as the squad becomes bloated with far too many players to replace at the same time as they are all over 30

WLtoon you’re right, I think this is the poorest quality the Championship has been in a while, what gets on my nerves is if you lose a London team because of relegation you always get another one replacing them via promotion.

Norwich have a fantastic team, I wouldn’t call them poor quality, the Championship is getting harder every year to get out of IMO. Especially when you see a team like Derby in a desperate relegation struggle.

You still have Brentford in the paly offs so that`s at least one cockney team coming up if they win it.

Brentford were hot favourites in the play-offs last year and couldn’t make it, I reckon they’ll fail again this year.

Barnsley could be the dark horses given the run they’ve been on!
