Newcastle need to show a reaction after crashing back to Earth in the 2-0 defeat to Arsenal, a match in which the lads were never at the races from the get-go. It ended a four-match unbeaten run with barely even a fight.
Next on the deck is another one of our recent bogey clubs in Leicester City. Newcastle have lost the last three to the Foxes including a 2-1 defeat at St. James’ Park in January.
However, we were summarily whipped in our two fixtures last season including a 5-0 romp at the King Power Stadium. We’ll return to the scene Friday evening facing an opponent that is not likely to take things lightly.
Leicester are determined to keep their Champions League place this season after they faltered down the stretch last year to barely miss out. They currently sit third in the Premier League and have a 5-point edge over West Ham in 5th. They’ll want to maintain that advantage.
As for Newcastle, our fate lies at the opposite end of the table. This weekend’s results have us back down in 17th with Fulham’s sights, though quite a distance away, focused firmly on our backs.
This past Sunday the lads let an opportunity to pull further away slip. There’s not much to take away from the match against Arsenal other than to avoid anything similar on Friday.
There were few positives against the Gunners and it was a difficult task to select our best player. Though Matt Ritchie has barely edged Allan Saint-Maximin by just three votes in our poll.
Hopefully, it’ll be a lesson learned to not take the foot off the gas just yet. There’s still work to do to ensure safety. A result on Friday would be just the outcome needed to wash away the stain of Sunday’s anemic performance.
