Newcastle made a splash last summer with the signing of Callum Wilson from Bournemouth for £20m. The striker currently leads the club in goals with 12 while providing 5 assists, though will miss the remainder of the campaign with a second hamstring injury.
With transfer funds likely to be minuscule this summer, Newcastle will have to get creative to improve the squad. A Wilson-like addition is going to be very hard to come by. Though there have been some links to players emerging over the past few weeks.
It appears that bringing in a young center-back could be a priority with Celtic’s Kristoffer Ajer, Vitesse’s Danilho Doekhi, and Vitoria’s Abdul Mumin all named as possible targets. Though none have Premier League experience, all three are aged 23 or under and would fill a need in Newcastle’s aging defense.
The addition of Joe Willock has transformed Newcastle since he joined on loan from Arsenal in February. The midfield was crying out for a player of Willock’s ability who could get forward to offer a threat in the final third.
Bringing the 21-year-old back next summer, or finding a player of similar ability is a top priority in the summer window. Hopefully, something can be worked out where Willock is a Magpie next season.
Another area that may need another body is at the top end of the pitch. Andy Carroll’s return to Newcastle is likely to last just two seasons. That will open up a squad place for another forward.
Though if Bruce decides to keep with the 5-3-2 formation, he will still have plenty of options for the two forward roles next season in Wilson, Allan Saint-Maximin, Joelinton, Dwight Gayle (should he sign an extension), and even Ryan Fraser.
The Mail is reporting that Newcastle are watching the situation of Leeds forward Tyler Roberts, who is entering the final year of his contract. The 22-year-old has been offered a new long-term deal as Bielsa hopes to keep him at Elland Road.
However, Roberts has not yet signed the new deal and appears to be keeping his options open. The report claims Newcastle feel the Welsh international has significant potential to improve and would fit Bruce’s preference for British players with Premier League experience.
Roberts has made 25 appearances in the league for Bielsa, however, he’s yet to open his account this season and has scored just 7 times in his 80 appearances for Leeds. He is also said to be looking for more opportunities in the starting eleven though he has started 11 of Leeds’ last 12 Premier League matches.
Leeds reportedly value the former West Brom Academy product at £10m despite him entering the final year of his contract. He joined Leeds from the Hawthorns in 2018 for just £2.5m.
Roberts would be a decent addition to the squad to provide another option up front. However, not for anywhere near £10m. If Newcastle do add a forward this summer for any significant amount of money, we’re probably looking for one who can come in for Callum Wilson and provide a bit more of a threat in front of goal.
