Report – Newcastle Monitoring Wales International’s Contract Situation

Newcastle made a splash last summer with the signing of Callum Wilson from Bournemouth for £20m. The striker currently leads the club in goals with 12 while providing 5 assists, though will miss the remainder of the campaign with a second hamstring injury.

With transfer funds likely to be minuscule this summer, Newcastle will have to get creative to improve the squad. A Wilson-like addition is going to be very hard to come by. Though there have been some links to players emerging over the past few weeks.

It appears that bringing in a young center-back could be a priority with Celtic’s Kristoffer Ajer, Vitesse’s Danilho Doekhi, and Vitoria’s Abdul Mumin all named as possible targets. Though none have Premier League experience, all three are aged 23 or under and would fill a need in Newcastle’s aging defense.

The addition of Joe Willock has transformed Newcastle since he joined on loan from Arsenal in February. The midfield was crying out for a player of Willock’s ability who could get forward to offer a threat in the final third.

Bringing the 21-year-old back next summer, or finding a player of similar ability is a top priority in the summer window. Hopefully, something can be worked out where Willock is a Magpie next season.

Another area that may need another body is at the top end of the pitch. Andy Carroll’s return to Newcastle is likely to last just two seasons. That will open up a squad place for another forward.

Though if Bruce decides to keep with the 5-3-2 formation, he will still have plenty of options for the two forward roles next season in Wilson, Allan Saint-Maximin, Joelinton, Dwight Gayle (should he sign an extension), and even Ryan Fraser.

The Mail is reporting that Newcastle are watching the situation of Leeds forward Tyler Roberts, who is entering the final year of his contract. The 22-year-old has been offered a new long-term deal as Bielsa hopes to keep him at Elland Road.

However, Roberts has not yet signed the new deal and appears to be keeping his options open. The report claims Newcastle feel the Welsh international has significant potential to improve and would fit Bruce’s preference for British players with Premier League experience.

Roberts has made 25 appearances in the league for Bielsa, however, he’s yet to open his account this season and has scored just 7 times in his 80 appearances for Leeds. He is also said to be looking for more opportunities in the starting eleven though he has started 11 of Leeds’ last 12 Premier League matches.

Leeds reportedly value the former West Brom Academy product at £10m despite him entering the final year of his contract. He joined Leeds from the Hawthorns in 2018 for just £2.5m.

Roberts would be a decent addition to the squad to provide another option up front. However, not for anywhere near £10m. If Newcastle do add a forward this summer for any significant amount of money, we’re probably looking for one who can come in for Callum Wilson and provide a bit more of a threat in front of goal.

I bet swapping Bielsa for Bruce is way up his priority list.

    From Nufc.com
    Stats:

With one home game left, Steve Bruce’s side have collected 20 points at SJP this season: that’s six less than last season and two less than their lowest PL tally of 22 set in 2008/09.

The three goals here boosted our seasonal home tally to 25 ahead of Wednesday’s final game at SJP. That’s the highest PL return since the 2015/16 campaign.

Conceding four goals though means that we’ve let in 33 at SJP in 18 PL fixtures – our leakiest defence in any of the 26 seasons of the Premier League.

Jail, as someone pointed out earlier, our well drilled machine at the back dismantled in 2 seasons by Bruce. Almost 2 per game against us at home, that’s shocking.

Imagine his pre season chat for next year. “Well lads the job’s simple we have to score 3 in every home game if we want to win, 2 might get us a few draws oh and forget about away games, we’re stuffed” 😆

    Sorry missed bus repost!

I know it’s just paper talk but 40m for ASM is ridiculous.
How are any of our linked away players so cheap?
I look at ASM he’s fairly new to the premiership but has really shone straight from the off, none of this taking a year to get used to the premiership business!
But then I compare him to the likes of Nicolas Pepe at arsenal at 72m a few years ago & just don’t get why they press are showing ASM so cheap?

Scott, it’s anti NE bias. We’re a little club remember, big numbers don’t get quoted in stories about us. Ashley’s legacy. 🙁

Aces, not really interested in stats, just thought I’d post it. I don’t really bother what other people think if of player, I go off what I see, I’ve always liked Jonjo, when the team play crap, which is a lot of the time, he’s scapegoated. I think he’s played well the last few games from what I’ve watched and listened to. Would love an upgrade, but he gets a lot of uncalled for abuse, I’ve seen a few begrudgingly give him praise, but lots of posters won’t agree, and that’s ok.

Good morning all, i hope none of us have the Sunday morning blues.
I too think Jonjo played well v Citeh, did well v Leicester too, as did all of the team, but we do need an upgrade now.
I watched Wraiths show from Friday and KP seems to have some damning evidence regarding the the PL and Bein ready as ammo in the event of a court case.
Still don`t like the Geordie Dentist much mind.

I bet there was one huge party in Leicester last night, it`s a well done for sticking it to one of the greedy 6.
At least the Chelski players seemed devastated after losing the game, bearing in mind they have a huge game next week, an even bigger one.
Maybe some players still have old fashioned values at heart, and it`s not just about money after all.

WLT, of course we need upgrades, but one player gets untold abuse, not so much on here, but he always tries, I don’t think he should have got another contract, but we’ll never get an upgrade while Ashley’s here. It was Perez last season, look at him now. It’s all about opinions, I just wish Shelves free kick had gone in, 😉

Interesting stats that show how much we’ve progressed under Bruceyboy. I I wonder whether they’re the numbers Ashley and the Bruce-lovers see?

Anywhere else, and a manager with those stats’d be shown the door.

You may have a point with that I’m also looking at darlow at 8m again paper talk but on this season’s performances is there much difference between darlow & Pope apart from the 32m price tag?

Carltoon shelvey puts a lot of yards in and very few can pass a ball as well as him. I don’t think he should be the target of fans ire either.

If anyone’s got nowt better to do, it’d be interesting to see whether Leicester City have spent zillions to get where they are today.

Ashley’s keen on self-sustainability – is Lelicester City FC anywhere near achieving it?

Those goals against, what the hells happened to our defence. You would think that Bruce, being a defender he would have some idea, he’s took us backwards in that department, getting rid of Lerjuern, was a mistake, I think we’ve also missed Lascelles.

Scott, that exactly the issue, the press have developed a “small team” mentality regarding us that wasn’t around in the KK/SBR era. We were amongst the giants of the game then, paying world record fees for players, now we’re just cannon fodder for the big guys – 14/15 years of Ashley governance, and he’s regarded as a “suitable” owner – what a load of crap, I hope we bring the PL to their knees.

I’m not a fan of Shelveys but he did play ok vs City.
I think the major issue with him is he needs someone beside him to do the grunt work and unfortunately for him, we just don’t have that type of player apart from the occasional brilliant pass he offers little else.
Just look a Tielemans yesterday now that’s a player who has it all great range of passing can tackle a good work rate and can score and assist his range of passing is Brilliant.
Hopefully, soon we have that type of player .

Get Willock signed up whether its another loan with a option to buy him , and we need another centre forward simular to wilson , a midfield player who can dictate play and a midfield ball winner . and if the budget spreads to another tricky winger …

Shelvey isn’t scapegoated, he’s just the biggest waster in the squad and that annoys people. The fact he’s captain is ridiculous, literally one of the last players who should be.

Players like him are mediocrity personified in ability and attitude. Not like he has the HBA type talent to offset his self-admitted laziness.

He doesn’t even pass it particularly well these days. His best game for us was his debut and that sums him up.
