With the season coming to a close tomorrow at Fulham, the real work for the offseason will start to ramp up. Steve Bruce has set his sights on bringing in 3 to 4 quality signings to improve his first team. We could also continue the trend of bringing in promising youngsters as well.
In addition to incomings, there are also plenty of decisions to make on players whose contracts are expiring or entering their final year. Christian Atsu and Henri Saivet will see their Newcastle careers come to a close after not featuring at all this season.
The futures of Andy Carroll and Federico Fernandez are currently up in the air. The prevailing wisdom is that Carroll, who has played sparingly this year, will not return though Bruce said that decision will be made after the season is officially done and dusted.
Fernandez has been a stellar servant for Newcastle but is part of an aging center-back group that is in need of paring down and then improving. We’ll also have Florian Lejeune and Kelland Watts back from loan spells this summer, though Watts is likely another year away from having an impact on the first team.
The list continues to grow as far as targets go in the center of defense. Football League World has an exclusive that Newcastle are still interested in Hull City’s Jacob Greaves, who we were first linked with in January.
The 20-year-old, like Watts, may not be ready for the Premier League just yet. However, he is a very promising young center-back who would be a great addition. With Hull bouncing straight back into the Championship, bringing him in and then sending him back on loan could be an option that suits both clubs.
While that wouldn’t help Newcastle much for next season, it would help boost the position for the future. We could theoretically hold on with what we’ve got for at least another season with so many defenders on the books.

Comment #24Reference the Gazette piece posted last thread…
‘The club must also make decisions on those players whose contracts expire at the end of the season, notably Dwight Gayle, Andy Carroll, Jacob Murphy and Federico Fernandez. The club has an option to extend Fabian Schar’s deal by another year.’
Easy
Gayle and Carroll out, offer Murphy and Fernandez new contracts and take the extension option on Shar’s.
And, when Bruceyboy said he understood fans’ frustrations, he might have been better offering an apology for maligning them.

From earlier and in respect of beIN’s letter to EPL clubs, this Gazette piece explains it nicely.

Suarez shipped out by Barcelona due to his age. Ends up scoring the goal that wins the league for Atletico, in a season where he’s scored 21 league goals.
Got to love it.
