Newcastle Behind In Chase For Left-Back As Another Nervous Summer Awaits

There was a recent claim that Newcastle were not looking to bring Jetro Willems back this summer. The 27-year-old will become a free agent after his deal at Frankfurt expires later this month.

However, a left-back may not be on the docket this summer at St. James’ Park. If Matt Ritchie remains a Magpie, then that would give Bruce two excellent options at left wing-back with the 31-year-old battling it out with Jamal Lewis.

While Ritchie will turn 32 in September, he was outstanding in our final 9 matches where our season was turned around. So having his passion and leadership around for at least another season would be a popular outcome.

If Ritchie does end up moving, as he almost did in January to his former club Bournemouth, then left-back comes into play as a priority position. Though, we’ll likely have a replacement already brought in before a move away for Ritchie would be sanctioned.

Willems would be welcomed back with open arms. However, he’s not kicked a ball competitively since suffering his knee injury in January of 2020. Due to stringent post-Brexit transfer rules, the Dutchman could find it difficult to acquire a work permit.

Newcastle should have targets identified for the different scenarios that could play out this summer. That’s where a report from L’Equipe becomes intriguing. Get French Football News is citing a claim from the French outlet that Brest left-back Romain Perraud (pictured above) is being tracked by the Magpies.

The 23-year-old is coming off a stellar season for Brest, who just avoided relegation from Ligue 1 with a 17th place finish. The former Nice Academy product had 3 goals while providing 7 assists in 36 appearances.

In January of this year, he signed a new contract to 2025 which gives Brest some security should any club come knocking. According to L’Equipe, Newcastle, Leeds, and Southampton are all very interested in Perraud with the Saints reportedly leading the chase.

The problem for Newcastle is Perraud would cost a significant fee in the £8-12m range. Even if Newcastle sell Ritchie, the fee brought in would likely cover less than half of that amount.

With such a limited budget this summer, Newcastle will have to get creative to bring in any quality signings. It may also serve the club well to retain as many players as possible for at least next season.

Based on the following departure list published by the Premier League, that could be what Newcastle have decided to do. According to this list, the only senior players who won’t be retained are Andy Carroll, Christian Atsu, and Henri Saivet.

While it’s not official, Newcastle may be keeping Federico Fernandez and Dwight Gayle around next season. Both players are on contracts that expire at the end of the month while it’s been reported that Paul Dummett and Fabian Schar both have had year-long extensions triggered.

It could be another conservative window for Newcastle with the only hope of change coming by way of a successful resurrection of the Saudi-backed takeover. Though Mike Ashley’s pending dual legal battles could extend well into next season.

However, a source within St. James’ Park has revealed that our want-away owner remains convinced he’ll be vindicated in his attempt to get the takeover resurrected and even completed this summer. That is at least what Ken Lawrence claims in an exclusive in the The Sun.

In his report, Lawrence has published the following quote from a ‘source inside the club’:

“Mike Ashley is certain he’ll win his case.

“He has told the consortium to have their money ready to complete in a month.”

Hope springs eternal though after what we suffered through last summer, our optimism remains quite low. We’ll hopefully find out more in the coming weeks with Ashley’s anti-competition case against the league scheduled to get underway next Friday.

How many players are we linked with up to now then?
Thirty odd and it`s only the start of June, no doubt we will hit the 100 mark by the end of the month and will probably sign none of the so called targets.

On Dummett, Kets is obviously having a laugh right? perhaps if we signed someone like Paulo Dummetto , that`s got a better ring to it don`t you agree.
Dummett is an outstanding defender, one of the best payers to come out of our youth system for many a year.
There is a centre half playing for England who is an absolute liability, Wilson gave him a torrid time when we played his team in the PL, you might think i am mad , but i would have Dummett over him any day .

I haven`t read the Sun article, it`s a comic that has no credibility at all imo, especially any news on a takeover, nonsense.

Dummett is second string for me. No doubt he puts his heart in to every game but he cannot pass and is very limited going forward.
His defensive abilities are undermined due to his inability to retain any degree of possession and he often puts us in to difficulty because of this.

    Novo,

Each to their own but Dummett is totally reliable doing the job he is meant to do and he doesn`t get skinned by anyone, i think he is very underrated.

Not long before i`m out with the better half enjoying the sunshine and a few tipples, sitting on the balcony overlooking the Costa Del Hebburn.

Just read in the Sunday sport that if Amanda Staveley drops her draws then the Fakeover can finally be finalised. Must be true as the Sun newspaper haven’t picked up on this breaking news ,Neither has good old Soccer sauce.
Hold on tight lads…The takeover is just around the corner

    Totally agree on this:

”Dummett is second string for me. No doubt he puts his heart in to every game but he cannot pass and is very limited going forward.
His defensive abilities are undermined due to his inability to retain any degree of possession and he often puts us in to difficulty because of this”.

We need two quality wing backs. Willems and Van Aanholt would be ideal. Jamal Lewis isn’t good enough. Sell him back to Norwich for £9m

If Fernandez was English, I would have him in the England team ahead of Stones. Solid centre back. Can’t pass/cross a ball too.

We won’t see Willock in a toon shirt again. Fat Ashley is stringing us on again with the latest Sun newspaper garbage

Players like Coady, Mings, that Leeds midfielder aren’t good enough. Maddison, Lingard, Gary Cahill, Vardy, Ings, Antonio etc should all be in the squad. Players like Henderson, Calvert-Lewin just aren’t good enough.

Can`t see Willock coming back anytime soon, we need a player like him desperately though, not sure we will bring one in, we could be in deep doo doo without his type of contribution, however if we do sign someone of his ilk i think we will be ok.

    Have we been sold yet?
I have no interest in buying a season ticket under our Supreme Leader, but I can only assume that season ticket sales are slow. Only another 30 odd years of fake takeovers until the Supreme Leader parts company with Sports Direct turf. It cannot come soon enough. I will be greeting him upstairs. Deep joy!!!

The trouble is that these days most defenders are converted from other positions because they aren’t as good further forward.
The days when good defenders were made into good players through good coaching are gone.
There are a lot of defenders who cannot do the defensive basics.
They way most defenders allow strikers to drift away from them in today’s game is unbelievable.
Dummett is a good defender but the rest of his game is week.
The best defender ever? Baresi followed by Cannavaro.
Amazingly both players were well short of 6 foot and played centre half.

Dummett is a good full back as well as a steady CB , none of the above mentioned are both, like Dummett.
Totally reliable doing both jobs and worthy of his place in the team, he is a PL player, no doubt about it.

Dummett is an awful left back and is better as a centre back, but is still well below average. People only like him because he is a local lad. He is absolutely useless. Has about 1 good game in 30 matches.

Don`t know if that post was related to me but no, i am not related to Dummett, just think, like the majority of fans that he is a good steady defender.
I agree on Willock, we should try him on loan for a season before we buy but i can`t see him coming back, there will be more than us interested in him so best to forget about him.
    And Sven is shite 🙂
