Newcastle Behind In Chase For Left-Back As Another Nervous Summer Awaits

There was a recent claim that Newcastle were not looking to bring Jetro Willems back this summer. The 27-year-old will become a free agent after his deal at Frankfurt expires later this month.

However, a left-back may not be on the docket this summer at St. James’ Park. If Matt Ritchie remains a Magpie, then that would give Bruce two excellent options at left wing-back with the 31-year-old battling it out with Jamal Lewis.

While Ritchie will turn 32 in September, he was outstanding in our final 9 matches where our season was turned around. So having his passion and leadership around for at least another season would be a popular outcome.

If Ritchie does end up moving, as he almost did in January to his former club Bournemouth, then left-back comes into play as a priority position. Though, we’ll likely have a replacement already brought in before a move away for Ritchie would be sanctioned.

Willems would be welcomed back with open arms. However, he’s not kicked a ball competitively since suffering his knee injury in January of 2020. Due to stringent post-Brexit transfer rules, the Dutchman could find it difficult to acquire a work permit.

Newcastle should have targets identified for the different scenarios that could play out this summer. That’s where a report from L’Equipe becomes intriguing. Get French Football News is citing a claim from the French outlet that Brest left-back Romain Perraud (pictured above) is being tracked by the Magpies.

The 23-year-old is coming off a stellar season for Brest, who just avoided relegation from Ligue 1 with a 17th place finish. The former Nice Academy product had 3 goals while providing 7 assists in 36 appearances.

In January of this year, he signed a new contract to 2025 which gives Brest some security should any club come knocking. According to L’Equipe, Newcastle, Leeds, and Southampton are all very interested in Perraud with the Saints reportedly leading the chase.

The problem for Newcastle is Perraud would cost a significant fee in the £8-12m range. Even if Newcastle sell Ritchie, the fee brought in would likely cover less than half of that amount.

With such a limited budget this summer, Newcastle will have to get creative to bring in any quality signings. It may also serve the club well to retain as many players as possible for at least next season.

Based on the following departure list published by the Premier League, that could be what Newcastle have decided to do. According to this list, the only senior players who won’t be retained are Andy Carroll, Christian Atsu, and Henri Saivet.

While it’s not official, Newcastle may be keeping Federico Fernandez and Dwight Gayle around next season. Both players are on contracts that expire at the end of the month while it’s been reported that Paul Dummett and Fabian Schar both have had year-long extensions triggered.

It could be another conservative window for Newcastle with the only hope of change coming by way of a successful resurrection of the Saudi-backed takeover. Though Mike Ashley’s pending dual legal battles could extend well into next season.

However, a source within St. James’ Park has revealed that our want-away owner remains convinced he’ll be vindicated in his attempt to get the takeover resurrected and even completed this summer. That is at least what Ken Lawrence claims in an exclusive in the The Sun.

In his report, Lawrence has published the following quote from a ‘source inside the club’:

“Mike Ashley is certain he’ll win his case.

“He has told the consortium to have their money ready to complete in a month.”

Hope springs eternal though after what we suffered through last summer, our optimism remains quite low. We’ll hopefully find out more in the coming weeks with Ashley’s anti-competition case against the league scheduled to get underway next Friday.

Novocastrian66 agrees with me and that’s just on this blog. The other 50000 fans probably feel the same. Would you rather have Willems or Van Aanholt at left back instead of Dummett?

    Novo,

Yeah Beresi was probably the best ever , i too am not old enough to of seen Bobby Moore live but by all accounts he was a class act, he floated around the pitch so effortlessly apparently.

I would rather have Willems than Dummett as a left back for sure, i am not comparing them, i am saying Dummett is a good defender.
Would you rather have Willems as CB over Dummett?

I rate Dummett He will be fine as CB and back up lb I don’t think we need an additional LB We might need an additional CB if Florian or Clark decide to leave or Bruce decides for them
Pity Matty can be converted into a box to box midfielder I really hope Willock returns on a loan because I have a feeling that it might be a second season syndrome for him. Opposition players will be watching him and learning his ploys It will be interesting if he will be the same player if the goals dry up
We do need a back up striker though We saw what happened when Wilson go injured.
I think we need 3 or 4 I would like to see Willock an additional striker and maybe another midfield player
Overall the current team when fit will keep us safe and maybe with a few additions a top 10 side
    Even if Ashley doesn’t sell
I don’t believe a word or letter from the Sun

The club has gone so far backwards it amazes me we are still actually a PL club.
In the season Asley bought Nufc Bournemouth were in division 1 and Leicester had been relegated to division 1.
Now we allegedly are trying to buy there cast offs pal…The club is a joke.
And to add salt to the wound Ashley mouths off we close to being sold and fans still fall for it.
Role up role up its season ticket time suckers…Hahaha hahaha gotta love it

Totally agree about the club going backwards, it will continue under Jabba until eventually we are relegated once again., i doubt we will come straight back up, even if the Champo is pants.
Anyway, my good lady here and it is time to party at the Costa Del Hebburn.

While I agree with Kets to a degree I doubt you will find another 50k agreeing. As a full back Dummett is poor. You cannot separate his defending capabilities from his attacking attributes when playing as a full back. He has to be judged on both as a whole and his is limited.
He is a capable centre half.
Worthy of a place in the squad is about it.

At no point during Rafa’s time in charge has Mike Ashley allowed him to invest any money into the squad. In his first summer in charge, Benitez made a £30 million profit on transfers.

In his second summer, Benitez spent £43 million, and roughly received £25 million on transfers. Last summer, Benitez spent £22 million and received £44 million in sold players, with Newcastle pocketing £22 million overall.

Subsequently, Benitez has a total net spend of -£34 million. This is despite the fact that Mike Ashley assured Rafa, live on TV, that he could have “every penny that the club generates.”

Yet people still fall for Ashley and his cronies antics on lies and deceit through the papers and media to suit his own agenda.
Hahaha hahaha hahaha hahaha hahaha hahaha hahaha hahaha hahaha SUCKERS

If fans want to go to the match or renew season tickets that’s up to them.

After the year we have just had and I can’t blame any fan for wanting to be a part of that St James crowd on a match day

    Nobody is a sucker

Doesn’t matter as it’s the end of Ashley and the abuse he has put us through the last 14 years

The club will get its soul back and the fans will find there loudest voice once more

Perez was bang on the button on why he left because the club has no ambition.I followed the club through thick and thin for nearly 30 year travelling thousands of miles..Even through 2 relegations under Ashley.
But no more sunshine will I be fooled by his lies and bullshit rhetoric and if you fall for it then more fool you

I realize that Mund is very optimistic to say the least, and if it happens he might be buying drinks for all! (sarcasm, lol).
Mund, I really like that repost about Benitez. I know he was not every one’s cup of tea, but he also had his hands tied by AshLie.
Anyway, I have just been lurking here and will probably continue to do that until things heat up in the transfer season. Here’s hoping, but deep pockets/short arms owner more than likely will not spend.

    On Soumare.
Unfortunately it can never be proved whether they seriously thought they could sign Soumare for £35/45M. I am basing my opinion on it being a publicity stunt on 14 years of lies and deceit and other fake bids we’ve had in the past. Also if there was £35/45M available why didn’t we get anybody at all. There was £35M spent the following summer, so that was the “Soumare” money, so then where did the rest of the transfer budget disappear to.

Jane, yes, none of the 8 teams that finished below us in the EPL in 2007/8 (we finished 12th) are any longer in the EPL and most have not been for some time with the exception of Fulham who’ve had a couple of stints. Unfortunately outside of the top six and Everton there’s been a lot of volatility, just shows what a tough league it is.

Oh I want to join in on the Dummet debate.

I think he’s invaluable to us. He’s the best defender at the club and has pace. Obviously he’s not that great on the ball, but that’s why he’s with us. If he was as good attack wise as Willems he’d be playing for a top 6 club.

I prefer van anholt to willems. I just think he’s the safer option with injuries.
