A Loan To The Championship Is Likely The Best Path Forward For Young Midfielder

Incoming transfers will grab most of the headlines this summer, but what Steve Bruce decides to do with Matty Longstaff will be one to watch closely. The 21-year-old is entering the final year of the two-year contract he signed last summer which basically only kicked the big decision on his future down the road.

This time around it could take some convincing to get the local lad to commit to Newcastle. He made just 5 appearances last term and was frozen out for the final three months despite giving a good account of himself during a stretch of starts at the turn of the New Year.

Matty’s season got off to a foreboding start due to a pesky thigh injury that kept him out of the reckoning for the first two months. He made his season debut in early November in the 2-0 defeat at Southampton coming on as a second-half substitute.

The midfielder didn’t get a real opportunity until late December and early January where he was handed four starts in five matches. Then just as suddenly as Matty came into the team, he was out of Bruce’s thinking for the remainder of the season with the head coach opting for experience down the stretch.

Ultimately, Bruce’s decision to block a loan move to Watford in January turned out to be a very poor one. It cost Matty a great opportunity to get some first-team football under his belt. With Joe Willock being brought in on loan, Bruce had enough cover in midfield to sanction the move.

However, hindsight is 20/20 as they say and Newcastle have work to do to salvage Longstaff’s future as a Magpie. The best course forward could be to follow the Freddie Woodman example of two years ago.

Woodman was coming off a similarly disappointing campaign after having a loan move blocked by then-manager Rafa Benitez. The goalkeeper had a few starts in the FA Cup but it was first-team football that he was thirsting for.

In 2019, Woodman, as he was entering the final year of his deal, agreed to a year-long extension before heading to Swansea for a season-long loan. That proved to be an outstanding decision as Freddie improved immensely and signed a three year deal last summer before going back to the Liberty Stadium this past season.

Newcastle could work out a similar loan move for Matty and convince him to extend his current contract to 2023. He should have no shortage of Championship clubs willing to bring him in next season. While Watford have been promoted, The Chronicle claims that Derby are looking at Matty as a loan option for next season.

The meeting between Raab (Foreign Minister) and MBS et al, was ostensibly to discuss developments in the gulf area. That’ll have included the Saudi-Qatar relationship and proxy wars in the area.

It seems that Saudi Arabia and Raab discussed Joint Ventures, Saudi-UK business partnerships. MBS to Raab – ‘Joint ventures, know what I mean Mr Raab?’

The meeting would be just the platform for MBS reps to give Raab a gentle prod, a nudge to fix the takeover, without mentioning it?

Piracy happens in every country in world even usa and uk. Most iptv servers are probably usa or china or india even. With internet you will never stop it. Takeover got stopped cos Qatar and Saudis hate each other and Qatar used their influence. I want the saudi takeover however i prefer Qatar over Saudis cos Qatar dont kiss ass of US and Israel like Saudi does

Mare is an excellent show, it’s great how all these A list actors are doing series these days.

It wouldn’t surprise me if the narrative was along the lines of ‘show us you can take KSA-UK joint ventures seriously, deliver one and there could be a mutually beneficial relationship in future.’

Such business relationships could send a signal to Qatar, that KSA also has friends in the west.

On the other hand, I could be talking tripe.

Finally caught up on the blog; I’ve been catching up since the end of the season basically.

On TV shows, the new version of Stephen King’s — The Stand was a solid 9/10 imo. One of the best series’ I have seen in a long time — even though it gets a poor rating in IMDB. Great if you enjoy post-apocalyptical type shows; similar to Survivors, The Leftovers, that type of thing.

We have 26 in the blog Euro 2020 Fantasy Football League. It would be good to round it up to 30 at least. Having a FF team will make the games more interesting for neutral games.

    As per Scythe:

beIN have been trying to stop it since it started up:
“Citing alleged inaction against the service, Saudi Arabia was placed on intellectual property watchlists by the United States Trade Representative and European Union in 2019”
    That was before the takeover.

Gangs of New York to name another one and he had an amazing story about when on the set and playing the card game shithead with Daniel Day Lewis in full get up as Bill the Butcher. He was a method actor I’m sure you now so he stayed in character outside of scenes and sat down for a quick card game with the lads 😆 would of loved to see that

BeIN weren’t bothered by piracy? Pretty sure the PL were as they attempted multiple cases against Saudi prior to the takeover none of which were allowed because the Saudis essentially blocked them

I mean I’d be pretty annoyed if someone was stealing rights and money from me but maybe BeIN are easier going

I think BeIN have been battling Saudi over piracy since at least 2018 but I have no idea if there’s anything about them challenging them any earlier.
