The Euros Start Tonight As Deadline Day Arrives For The Premier League To Respond

Today is the day that EURO 2020 belatedly gets underway after being postponed a year due to the coronavirus pandemic. Turkey and Italy will get the tournament started tonight while England’s Euro journey starts on Sunday afternoon against Croatia.

The first Newcastle player who could be in action will be tomorrow afternoon when Fabian Schar and Switzerland take on Wales. Monday could provide a triple dose of Magpies with Scotland (Ryan Fraser), Slovakia (Martin Dubravka), and Sweden (Emil Krafth) all set for their first match.

Along with the Euros, today is the deadline for the Premier League to respond to Mike Ashley’s anti-competition claim. There’s likely not much to come out of today’s proceedings as the Competition Appeal Tribunal could last into next month. The Chronicle expects the Premier League’s response to be an application to basically have the claim thrown out.

There have been recent reports that Ashley and the members of the consortium remain confident that the takeover will be resurrected this summer. Today’s CAT is the first step in a two-pronged attack with Newcastle’s arbitration case set to start in July.

While these cases provide some lingering hope that Newcastle can finally escape the Ashley era, it’s shaping up to be another cruel summer. So at least we have the European Championships to occupy our uneasy minds over the next month.

Other news that hit Newcastle fans where it hurts, Rafa Benitez is reportedly under consideration for the Everton job. The Spaniard has been mentioned as a potential candidate but according to the Liverpool Echo, no contact has been made yet.

There continues to be a number of managers linked to Everton. Yesterday, a report claimed that Galatasaray’s Fatih Terim has been offered the job. Sport Witness is also citing reports from France that Rudi Garcia – formerly of Roma, Marseille, and Lyon – has been contacted about taking the reins at Goodison Park.

    anxer,
The price of bloody pint glasses on e bay and Amazon I think I’d be better off using a goldfish bowl. Had a canny collection of Hoegaarden pint glasses I liberated from a pub in Baker Street many years ago, they’re fairly indestructible so gawd knows what happened to them?

    Scott, you’re welcome.

I hope it made sense, having 2 cases ongoing simultaneously isn’t that easy to figure out or “separate” 😳

Jail, if you’ve got any of those huge brandy globe glasses, it’s fab in them. They’ve got to be close to a pint. 😉

Judges have been told the Premier League will submit detailed submissions and supporting evidence. Key test of PL’s legal case to avert the high-stakes airing in public court of the circumstances around one of the league’s most talked-out takeovers.

I’m sure the PL have been to court before, so why can’t Ashleys case be heard? It doesn’t make sense. That’s if they manage to get it thrown out .

    (A) who is this guy? and

    (B) why is he talking about judges, what judges?

    (C) is it CAT or arbitration related?

PS, there are no judges involved in CAT procedures.

However, the President presiding over the CAT proceedings is the Right Hon Mr Justice Roth.

Does that mean he’s a judge or a JP? – genuine question, don’t know.
