Newcastle have missed out on 19-year-old striker Kyle Joseph, who has penned a four-year deal with Swansea. The Scotland U19 international could have boosted the attacking ranks at the Academy which has grown barren with the release of Yannick Toure and the stunted development of Elias Sorensen.
An overhaul of the Academy is sorely needed after the release of 15 youngsters a few weeks ago. Newcastle have slowly added players over the past few windows though some of them were among the recent departures in midfielder Kyle Scott and center-back Ludwig Francillette.
There are still some promising prospects in tow with crown jewel Elliot Anderson getting his debut earlier this year. The 18-year-old trained with the first team all season and may be a candidate for a loan to the Championship.
Anderson followed three other local lads who made their Newcastle debuts in the previous season. Matty Longstaff, Tom Allan, and Kelland Watts all were handed debuts by Steve Bruce last season with Longstaff now having 20 appearances for his hometown club. However, only 5 came this past term.
Allan and Watts were handed cameos before heading out on loan this past season. Watts made 50 appearances for Plymouth in League One after two promising loan spells in League Two during the 2019/20 campaign.
Allan struggled on loan in League One with Accrington Stanley before being recalled in January, where pacy attacker was able to regain his goal scoring form for the U23s. However, he is entering the final year of his contract and turns 22 in September.
Newcastle also have two signings from last season which could impact the first team in the future. Playmaker Rodrigo Vilca was brought in for around £250k from Peruvian club Deportivo Municipal. He played the entire campaign with the U23s but is probably more suited for a loan move than the Premier League at this point.
Matthew Bondswell was signed as a free agent earlier this year after mutually agreeing on a release from RB Leipzig. The promising 19-year-old left-back can hopefully develop into a first-teamer over the next few seasons.
There are also some other youngsters who could come through in Joe White and Lee Clark’s son Bobby. White, a midfielder, recently was drafted into the England set up with the U18s while Clark, at just 16, is a potential wonderkid.
Newcastle need to develop these players and continue to add to the Academy. We’ve not had many players make the jump to the senior squad recently though that is partly due to letting some talent leave before reaching their full potential.
There’s a trio of ex-Magpies that jump straight to mind who would improve this current Newcastle squad. Adam Armstrong and Ivan Toney have excelled since being sold for minimal fees in 2018. They topped the Championship scoring charts last season with Toney set to test his mettle in the Premier League after Brentford’s promotion.
Armstrong could be one to watch for a return to Newcastle. We’ve been linked with the 24-year-old recently but likely don’t have the funds to make a move this summer. However, as Newcastle did with Toney, a sell-on fee of 40% was added to Armstrong’s transfer to Blackburn. He’s also entering the final year of his contract at Ewood Park.
Another one that got away is Kevin Mbabu. The 26-year-old is starring for Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga. He’s also come through for Switzerland at the international level and is their starting right-back in the Euros.

Comment #9Mund it’s brilliant for him. Long geordie managerial and coaching input at national team level. The great sir Bobby and of course the even greater Bryan Robson helped Venables :). I’m delighted for Bónna and hope we keep him in some capacity even if we get a takeover.

So England fans, are we feeling optimistic today? It’ll be interesting to see the team Southgate goes with. Let’s hope for a good game and an even better result.

Comment #19Jail…It’s picking up pace over here and has a bit of a buzz about the place, but I think it’s just because there’s been no buzz at all. Compared to years gone by, it’s a ghost town.
Ibiza is an odd place though. The biggest part of the islands industry, which revolves around the club scene, is non-existent, but the prices remain sky high. They are apparently running a trial club night over the next week or so. Mind, they’ve gone with children of the 80’s, which was basically a socially distanced event at it’s best 🙂
Looks like i’m heading back to the UK soon anyway. Not much keeping me here at the moment. I’ll try bring the weather with me, but no promises.

Comment #20Good morning all, looking forward to the game today. The 2 teams iv`e got a flutter on play each other but i obviously want England to win.
Croatia at 33/1 is good value mind, and will give us a good game.
So relieved Erikson pulled through last night, football is just a sport at the end of the day, if Erikson hadn`t pulled through i doubt i would of watched the rest of the competition.
