Newcastle have a bundle of crucial decisions to make this summer. One that hits home to many supporters is what Bruce will decide to do with local lad Matty Longstaff, who again is facing a protracted contract saga with his hometown club.
The 21-year-old’s contract ran out last summer before agreeing on a makeshift two-year deal despite interest from other clubs. The midfielder was hoping for more opportunities this past season before committing to a long-term deal.
As we all know, things did not pan out as hoped for Matty. After a pesky thigh injury kept him out for the opening months, he just never got an opportunity for a consistent run in the team. Longstaff finished the campaign with just 5 appearances after making 15 the year before.
Serie A club Udinese were one of the clubs hoping to sign Matty last summer for just a compensation fee. Their owner’s son owns Watford, who were considered a potential destination for Matty as well. The Hornets were keen on bringing Longstaff in on loan this past January.
Sport Witness has cited a report from Italy that Udinese still hold an interest in Longstaff. They could potentially make a move for him this summer.
With him again entering the final year of his contract, Newcastle need to be cautious with the young midfielder. The best option is a loan to the Championship or another Premier League club where he’ll get plenty of appearances.
Newcastle could secure a loan move while offering him a year-long extension to revisit his future next summer. That worked with Freddie Woodman a few years ago. Whether Matty will play ball this time around is another question.
Hopefully, we won’t be forced into selling our promising Academy prospect without having given him a proper opportunity in the starting eleven. At his age, Longstaff needs games and he just didn’t get enough of them last season.

i wasn`t bothered about the result of that game tbh, it was all about Erikson really wasn`t it, just so relieved he pulled through.

That was the point I was trying to make – that the result was immaterial when considering that Eriksen nearly died.

Comment #3Why not let Matty go out on loan to Udinese. That’s got to be better than playing in the Championship.

We only won it because Brighton never got as many points as us.

Comment #5Repost:
Regarding Grealish, statistically he is the most fouled player in the league. Teams are usually instructed to kick lumps out of him due to his ability to turn a game. I don’t like him as a bloke (he seems way too cocky – although he could be nice off the pitch, who knows?) but you have to admire his ability on the ball. We’re lucky he’s English.
That said, yes, he does sometimes go down easily, but just about every player in the league does so he’s no different in the that regard. After getting blatantly fouled from kick off you’re going to fake a few out of sheer frustration.

Seems the clowns in the huff with him

Comment #11Brighton took their foot off the gas in them last few games in the Champo, very unlike Chris Hughton. He couldn’t have been happy with that.

Comment #15If my memory serves me right, I think Brighton were 7 points clear with only 3 games to go, they bottled it and lost their last 3 games, unless Hughton was happy just to go up automatically of course, which is possible, they certainly took their foot off the gas imo.

Comment #176 month loan spell to Watford seems the best option for Matty, if it exists. If he struggles then get him in at Derby, if he succeeds comes back to SJP to fill in for any injuries.

Comment #22Ashley done is utmost to derail that season for whatever bizarre reason, it was like he’d seen the job was done and he was trying to get Rafa to quit. When he turned up at that Brentford game with Boshop and Barnes it was like a big shadow had been cast.

Comment #34Good sides have plenty of pace in the team, Scotland have very little apart from Robertson, a defender.and Fraser, who didn`t feature much, it`s little wonder they will struggle.
I thought they might of won today through sheer grit , determination and the fact they were playing at home against a very average Czech team, but what do i know.

Comment #35I have a feeling we may see a different performance from Scotland when we face them. I bet they’d love to do one over on us and will fight tooth and nail for the full 90. Some quick passing could get past their initial press and open them up though, we should be fine.

Comment #36Schick was bought by Roma for Euro43k and sold for E23k, scores 9 in 29 for Bayern Layverkosen(?) last season. I wonder if they would swap him for another £43k player?
