Bruce Could Be In For Budget Boost But It Will Not Be Greeted With Cheers On Tyneside

Steve Bruce could be in line to receive a slight boost to his summer transfer budget soon. Football Insider is reporting that Southampton are confident of winning the race for former-Newcastle forward Adam Armstrong.

Newcastle added a 40% sell-on fee when selling Armstong to Blackburn for £1.5m in 2018. He’s since taken The Championship by storm bagging 44 league goals over the past two campaigns, including 28 last season. In June, the 24-year-old was named the Championship’s PFA Player of the Year.

Blackburn’s hands are tied if any club comes in with a significant offer as Armstrong is entering the final year of his contract. Rovers may have to sell him at a cut-rate price with Football Insider claiming the Saints are hopeful just £10m would seal the deal after a breakthrough in talks.

Norwich, Everton, West Ham, and Newcastle have all been linked with Armstrong but it appears that Southampton are poised to win the race. If they do, Newcastle will get a few million in the bank which will hopefully be handed to Bruce to help improve the squad.

Newcastle’s summer business has stalled after it was reported that Mike Ashley would back some early business. Other than three Academy signings and a reported bid for another in Wolves defender Dion Sanderson, Newcastle don’t appear to be close to adding any players at the moment.

In fact, the club have yet to release a retained list with a number of players out of contract as of June 30th. At the moment, it appears Newcastle United are doing the bare minimum to get by in the hopes the Saudi takeover gets resurrected.

If it doesn’t, that could be a disaster heading into a very difficult campaign. Both Norwich and Watford have bounced straight back up and are strengthening early in the window. If former-Magpie Ivan Toney can continue his torrid goal-scoring form in the Premier League, then Brentford may be no slouches.

Newcastle should be making a run at Armstrong, who could be added for a bargain price. Though I can’t see Ashley shelling out three to four times what he sold a player for just three years ago.

Armstrong would be a popular signing and his fee would be offset significantly by the sell-on clause but we are unfortunately still at the mercy of our want-away owner.

simon376@37 – She’s obviously going to say all the right things in an effort win the fans over but yeah I agree she’d be a brilliant owner sitting on the board.

Speaking of suffering, I’ve been suffering excruciating pain in my ankle for a few weeks which I suspect might be gout, so to make it worse I’ve giving up alcohol for the moment! 🙁

My brief and unworthy take on Covid.

I believe it’s time we got our lives back.

    However,

I feel certain precautions are a must, and the most important of these is the 10 day self isolation. This should never be stopped.
If you test positive, stay away from everyone else.
    Basic common sense and decency.
If you get “pinged” get a PCR test, you won’t have to isolate if you’re negative.

With common sense and caution, we may all get to live again. 🙂
