Callum Wilson Becomes Newcastle’s Latest Number 9 While Joelinton Takes Recently Vacated Shirt

Newcastle United have confirmed that Callum Wilson will take the famous number 9 shirt. He wore the number 13 during his inaugural season on Tyneside.

Joelinton will take the number 7 shirt, which Andy Carroll wore for the past two seasons. The club have still to confirm Carroll’s departure. The Geordie’s contract expired last month.

This is what Wilson said about donning the iconic number nine for Newcastle United:

“They’re both iconic shirts and we’re both going to contribute a lot to the team.

“You’re playing for the badge on the front ultimately but you’re wearing a special number on the back and it’s just about doing it justice, playing well, and helping the team.”

Wilson joins a long line of famous number 9’s at St. James’ Park. Jackie Milburn, Alan Shearer, and Malcolm Macdonald soared to great heights in the shirt. More recently Andy Carroll, in his initial time with his hometown club, and Papiss Cisse enjoyed some success wearing the shirt.

Joelinton wore the number 9 for his first two seasons at Newcastle but has proven to be more a support striker than a goalscorer. Hopefully, this change of number can give the Brazilian a fresh start.

He showed some signs during the second half of last season and hopefully will continue his improvement this season. If he can reach another level, that would solve a big problem Steve Bruce faces in recruitment this summer.

    NY Mag,
It was madness to give someone so young, in a brand new league who wasn’t a CF the No9 shirt and expecting him to bang them in. Bruce probably knew that but was in no position to argue, he’d accepted the job as a willing patsy and its entailments.

    Jail,

Yeah possibly…I just hope it does the lad good.
He’s our player, it doesn’t look like he’s going anywhere.

I just want him to come good…..whether he can do that is a different matter.

You would have thought they would keep the no9 shirt for when we sign Haaland

Credit to Joe. I think the iconic No 9 shirt weighed heavy on his back but it still takes a mensch to recognise that it belongs to Wilson. I know he’s taken a lot of stick over the last couple of seasons but I’m holding thumbs that he finds himself this season. I’ve got a feeling….

If big Joe doesn’t show something this year to even justify half his fee then I think we all need to accept he will never cut it in this league.

Hope he proves me and others wrong

    Mund,

Forget his fee…that’s not his problem.
It’s a weight on his back given by us.

I say clap him, cheer him and encourage him….it can only help 🙂

So you coming round for some of my creation hat I’m impressed with. Got my Dads mate to try it who has been making wine for years, after sniffing and tasting, thought lovely also said it’s strong, can’t say I’ve noticed that yet though my Dad does think that as well

Totally agree, we need to forget his fee as that wasn’t his doing at all. He was signed for too much, made to play as a lone striker, given number 9 and expected to bang in goals even though that isn’t really his game. Put that together with a new league and the pressure put on him with the above, it’s no surprise he struggled and his confidence was shot. Get behind him and hopefully he pushes on from the more encouraging displays we saw from him towards the end of last season.

Aye that won’t of helped and sometimes as fans we forget that after all they are only human. We can be at a fragile state whatever position we hold in life.

I’ve seen glimpses of a PL player in the moment a few times but for me I just think he isn’t cut out for the PL. I’ve already given up on him but hope he proves me wrong.

Probably been mentioned already others but with the Fun88 logo added to the new home shirt combined with the white accent strip for the buttons, I can’t help but see a “4” on the front of every player.

Fair enough mate…you could very well be right.

I still have hope (but I’m a dreamer)

While he’s still our player, I’ll always hope he comes good. I think he tries when he plays for us, so I can’t ask for anything more.

    NY Mag,
It’s a lot easier said than done. Jolselu couldn’t have gotten off to a better start, the crowd were right behind him, but after two seasons of him not being able to hit a barn door unless the ball went in off anywhere but his foot or head. It’s hard not to groan when he misses a pen in a vitally important relegation match. He even punched his own head that time.

Anyone worried that the hopeful date is now the end of the transfer window? At this risk of sounding like toon22, is anyone else not worried that once we start to approach that, it’ll then be hoping to be done by January window? It just repeatedly being pushed further and further back.

Also if Ashley is not wanting to spend money before knowing where the takeover is at, if it’s the end of the transfer window does that mean basically no transfer business other than a loan or two in that case?
