Callum Wilson Becomes Newcastle’s Latest Number 9 While Joelinton Takes Recently Vacated Shirt

Newcastle United have confirmed that Callum Wilson will take the famous number 9 shirt. He wore the number 13 during his inaugural season on Tyneside.

Joelinton will take the number 7 shirt, which Andy Carroll wore for the past two seasons. The club have still to confirm Carroll’s departure. The Geordie’s contract expired last month.

This is what Wilson said about donning the iconic number nine for Newcastle United:

“They’re both iconic shirts and we’re both going to contribute a lot to the team.

“You’re playing for the badge on the front ultimately but you’re wearing a special number on the back and it’s just about doing it justice, playing well, and helping the team.”

Wilson joins a long line of famous number 9’s at St. James’ Park. Jackie Milburn, Alan Shearer, and Malcolm Macdonald soared to great heights in the shirt. More recently Andy Carroll, in his initial time with his hometown club, and Papiss Cisse enjoyed some success wearing the shirt.

Joelinton wore the number 9 for his first two seasons at Newcastle but has proven to be more a support striker than a goalscorer. Hopefully, this change of number can give the Brazilian a fresh start.

He showed some signs during the second half of last season and hopefully will continue his improvement this season. If he can reach another level, that would solve a big problem Steve Bruce faces in recruitment this summer.

My seat is Milburn opposite Leazes penalty area, just above first section of fans by pitch.
Missus doesn’t want me going to any matches yet, at least until all kids at home have had 2 jabs.
    Divorce could be coming!

Id bet last year was a total disaster
We obviously spent way too much
Cant be wasting money like that again

Lets sell a bunch of players and replace em with loans and players we can sell on for a profit
For the 15 th year and running

‘Hopefully the change of number can give Joel a fresh start’.Whyaye, he’ll be just like the proverbial new signing. I read criticism of Hayden, a wholehearted defensive midfielder who does a good job on the basis he doesn’t score enough goals. What loads of old codswallop.
