Late York City Header Downs Newcastle 1-0 In First Pre-Season Friendly

Steve Bruce made a couple of changes after the scoreless first half at York City. Allan Saint-Maximin and Jamal Lewis came on for Callum Wilson and Jamaal Lascelles.

The move pushed Hayden into the back three with Matt Ritchie going into midfield. Lewis went to left wing-back while Jeff Hendrick dropped deeper into the holding role in midfield.

Saint-Maximin looked lively from the start The Frenchman surged forward in the 52nd minute and was brought down on the edge of the area. Matt Ritchie’s subsequent free-kick was low and blocked by the wall. His quick follow-up effort was also deflected.

After a wayward shot from Saint-Maximin, Bruce made another couple of changes. Matty and Sean Longstaff came on for Jeff Hendrick and Ryan Fraser. Matty dropped into Hendrick’s holding role.

In the 65th minute, Allan drove to the right byline. He dinked the defender a few times before sending in a cross. A York defender headed a back pass to the keeper that had to be tipped over to prevent an own goal.

Bruce brought Paul Dummett on for Fernandez after a drinks break in the 68th minute. Watts moved into the middle of the back three with Dummett in his familiar place on the left.

Dwight Gayle had a chance from a corner just minutes after the substitution. Ritchie’s corner was whipped in close and the unmarked striker flashed his header wide of the far post.

Jacob Murphy did some excellent work down the right in the 72nd minute. The wing-back beat his man down the right and played a low cross back into the box. Ritchie latched onto it forcing Whitney into a quick reaction save resulting in a corner.

Some more magic from Saint-Maximin resulted in another chance. The Frenchman carried the ball forward after receiving it from Lewis. He played it to Gayle who returned it to Allan in the area. Saint-Maximin’s shot was blocked out for another corner.

Bruce made another changed in the 79th minute with Gayle coming off for Yoshinori Muto. York soon began to apply pressure with a few deflected shots. Duckworth broke the stalemate with a wonderful looping header in the 87th minute which sailed over Langley.

Newcastle had an opportunity from a corner late but Watts had his effort saved as he suffered a bloody nose in the process. York were able to see out the match for the 1-0 victory in what was a tepid display overall from Newcastle. However, some cobwebs will have been shaken off today.

Newcastle’s U23 also were defeated 2-1 at Harrogate Town.

In other news, former Magpie Christian Atsu has joined Saudi club Al Raed.

Good to see the plan again for this season is give it to maxi and see if he can do anything with it.

We really need a striker or two, definitely a midfield link, Willock did that job really well when he played.

Think the biggest problem is management don’t know what to do with the players we have

And the Goalie, is very tall, and not bad. Only a friendly, Wilson way off the pace, thought Joe had a canny few minutes,

Our pre season results are always a mixed bag, pretty sure we lost to Middlesbrough 5-1 last season. Think we lost 2 and won 2.

You were right this morning about cancelling the ‘Churchillian Victory Speech’ for freedom day
A Government source said: ‘The plan had been for Boris to effectively declare victory over the virus by summoning the spirit of Churchill, with appropriately stirring rhetoric. That no longer feels appropriate.’
    ‘Victory over the Virus’ speech
You couldn’t make it up –

Agree with Carlton, Watts was the only plus point in this awful match, I know it was only a friendly and it’s only about fitness, match play etc…but they were terrible. We must have the slowest build up attack in all the leagues, we don’t move off the ball at all, and all the players looked completely rusty, lethargic, uninterested especially St Max, there were several players matching Henrick, ie the invisible man……this team with Wilson,Gayle and Muto will not score many goals in the PL, the midfield create nothing at all, corners included, rant over, roll on Doncaster on Friday ! T/ O or bust….

    Reilly,

It’s a shame Andy Carroll couldn’t play for Newcastle!

I just get a kinda feeling that something happened between him & Mr Bruce.

AC was hardly seen at the back end of last season and there were games that were crying out for AC to close the opposition off!

Bruce says pre season is about fitness.

But our players last season look the weakest against most other team’s fitness who played way more game.

And we have such high injuries too. Constant muscle injuries throughout the season.

What a piss poor manager Bruce is. Can’t even manage fitness level of our players.

The bloke is an idiot. A nincompoop, a complete simpleton and that’s before I start criticising his stupidity.
The season hasn’t even began and he is winding the fans up already, they’re going to be a frenzied mass by the time WHU comes round if he keeps that up. You’ve just been beaten by non league York and he starts blathering on about big clubs. Wait till the footer starts on about Cewvid and lack of transfers 🙁
