Steve Bruce made a couple of changes after the scoreless first half at York City. Allan Saint-Maximin and Jamal Lewis came on for Callum Wilson and Jamaal Lascelles.
The move pushed Hayden into the back three with Matt Ritchie going into midfield. Lewis went to left wing-back while Jeff Hendrick dropped deeper into the holding role in midfield.
Saint-Maximin looked lively from the start The Frenchman surged forward in the 52nd minute and was brought down on the edge of the area. Matt Ritchie’s subsequent free-kick was low and blocked by the wall. His quick follow-up effort was also deflected.
After a wayward shot from Saint-Maximin, Bruce made another couple of changes. Matty and Sean Longstaff came on for Jeff Hendrick and Ryan Fraser. Matty dropped into Hendrick’s holding role.
In the 65th minute, Allan drove to the right byline. He dinked the defender a few times before sending in a cross. A York defender headed a back pass to the keeper that had to be tipped over to prevent an own goal.
Bruce brought Paul Dummett on for Fernandez after a drinks break in the 68th minute. Watts moved into the middle of the back three with Dummett in his familiar place on the left.
Dwight Gayle had a chance from a corner just minutes after the substitution. Ritchie’s corner was whipped in close and the unmarked striker flashed his header wide of the far post.
Jacob Murphy did some excellent work down the right in the 72nd minute. The wing-back beat his man down the right and played a low cross back into the box. Ritchie latched onto it forcing Whitney into a quick reaction save resulting in a corner.
Some more magic from Saint-Maximin resulted in another chance. The Frenchman carried the ball forward after receiving it from Lewis. He played it to Gayle who returned it to Allan in the area. Saint-Maximin’s shot was blocked out for another corner.
Bruce made another changed in the 79th minute with Gayle coming off for Yoshinori Muto. York soon began to apply pressure with a few deflected shots. Duckworth broke the stalemate with a wonderful looping header in the 87th minute which sailed over Langley.
Newcastle had an opportunity from a corner late but Watts had his effort saved as he suffered a bloody nose in the process. York were able to see out the match for the 1-0 victory in what was a tepid display overall from Newcastle. However, some cobwebs will have been shaken off today.
Newcastle’s U23 also were defeated 2-1 at Harrogate Town.
