Bruce Confirms Carroll Exit And Defender’s Imminent Return To Spain

Steve Bruce has spoken after this afternoon’s friendly at York City. The lads but in a cautious effort against Steve Watson’s Minstermen in a 1-0 defeat. However, quite a few members of the squad got a full match in what was a decent run-out for this point of the pre-season.

There were few Magpies missing from the squad. Jonjo Shelvey, Florian Lejeune, and Javier Manquillo were unexpected omissions. During the broadcast on NUFC TV, BBC Newcastle’s Mathew Raisbeck confirmed that Shelvey was held back due to a minor knock.

Shelvey was at the LNER Stadium as was Manquillo though were not sure why the Spaniard wasn’t involved. Bruce announced after the match that Florian Lejeune will head back to Alaves where he spent last season on loan.

This time it will be a permanent move for an undisclosed fee. This is what Bruce said as published in The Athletic:

“Florian is on his way to Spain, it looks as if something is going to happen there.

“It will put a few quid in the coffers. He is going back to Alaves where he was on loan and there is something imminent.”

With the performance of Kell Watts this afternoon, as well as having Ciaran Clark and Paul Dummett as left-footed center-backs, it appears that Lejeune’s best option was to return to Spain. Florian will depart with just one year remaining on his contract.

As expected, Andy Carroll is now a free agent and has left his hometown club. Bruce confirmed that Andy has left despite no official announcement from Newcastle. Though it was quite evident with Joelinton taking his number 7 shirt.

This is what Bruce said about Carroll’s departure:

“He’s out of contract. I had a conversation with Andy. I think he wants to go and play.

“I wish the lad all the best. I hope it goes well for the rest of his career. He’s certainly been a big help to me in the last couple of years, that’s for sure.”

Carroll managed just one goal during his second stint with Newcastle. Though he was a massive presence in the dressing room and we wish him all the best at his next club. The 32-year-old joins Henri Saivet and Christian Atsu as departures this summer.

Yesterday, Atsu signed with Saudi Arabia’s Al Raed.

    Jane,

With Lejeune and Muto back, I think the squad is fully stocked (quantity, not quality)

As always, we have to get rid a few….in order to bring players in.
I think willock would need a squad place (whereas, he didn’t previously)

Tricky business….and no doubt programmed into charnleys abacus 🙂

    Carroll and Atsu gone.
Saviet as well apparently, where did he go ?
Just leaves Gayle to find somewhere and the squad has places to fill.
Who and when is another matter.

Saivet is currently listed as a free agent, so nobody has snapped him up yet. Here’s an interesting little article on him though…

“It will put a few quid in the coffers.”

That could easily be a parody quote. Unbelievable, what a cock. We’ve got no money yet again this window

From my previous post, got no response…..so not many if any (apart from Carltoon) watched the game today, if we are happy with this set of players, manager, coaches etc….we are setting our standards of NUFC extremely very low, each year its the same…. Championship standard players playing for us each year not improving us one iota, yet we all love the toon and hope something will change soon….., crystal ball at the ready….. cheers

To be fair, Bruce did say a few quid, which is more than two. So I’d say we’re doing pretty well in this transfer window so far if we’ve been given three quid for the lad.

The probably £2m we get from lejeune I’m sure will really go a long way into boosting our budget. We could buy Willocks left foot maybe.

I got the impression from reading the comments that a few people were watching the game and that not many of them were particularly impressed by what they saw. I watched it live on YouTube and of course you’d expect a Premier League team to beat a team like York, but I wasn’t expecting much from Bruce today. And I wasn’t disappointed.

Going into the season with low expectations and I don’t expect to be surprised by our performances at all.

so that may leave Matty, Muto, Willock and Watts for 2 places.

i’d give them to Matty and Willock but that means only 3 strikers.

Keep an eye out for York next season, Steve Watson is a great up n coming coach who will get better with experience.
Didn`t expect much from the Toon today but i certainly didn`t expect them to lose.
I won`t lose any sleep over the game, it`s only a friendly after all. As long as we are ready for West Ham then fine.

    Controversial post.
Had an interesting conversation earlier. Apparently it was political Southgate choosing/bringing on Rashford Sancho Saka. He/FA wanted a black player to be hero the poster boy. BLM take the knee etc and now a black penalty shootout winner all part of FA promoting anti racism. They even had marketing material ready to praise the black lions as heroes. Could it be true so that’s why Grealish wasnt allowed to take one or Stones. Grealish said he wanted one. Saka never took pen for Arsenal so scientifically how could he be good enough to take last penalty in a Final? Like I said interesting opinion

At the end of the day, the only pre season results that matter are the outcome of arbitration and the CAT case.

    Steve Bruce on Kell Watts:

“I think it’s important we have a look at him and see what he’s got, he’s had a successful loan spell at Plymouth last season.”

“I thought he did OK today, it was an ideal opportunity to have a good look at him we will do over pre-season.”

That theory sounds like nothing more than a wild Facebook conspiracy. Going by that logic they also must have known what a shitstorm it would cause, if the very real prospect of those players missing penalties happened. The negatives far outweigh the positives Don’t think there’s even the slightest bit of truth in it.
