Bruce Happy With The ‘Workout’ As He Is Asked About Joelinton’s Injury And Young Defender

Newcastle were defeated in Sunday’s first pre-season friendly at York City. A late header from Micheal Duckworth looped over the outstretched arms of 6’7″ Dan Langley to give the hosts a 1-0 win.

The lads weren’t a well-oiled machine today as they didn’t really push into higher gears. Continuing to build fitness levels after a busy training camp was the main goal.

As Isaac Hayden tweeted after the match, the focus is to be ready for West Ham on August 15th.

Steve Bruce relayed a similar message in his post-match comments. He was disappointed with the result but was happy with the workout. This is what Bruce said about the Sunday’s friendly as published in The Northern Echo:

“Listen, we’re disappointed with the result, of course, but it’s not all about the result.

“We didn’t deserve to lose, but it just shows you if you don’t play with the intensity and the speed and the pace you normally do, then you get frustrating afternoons like we’ve just had. It’s all about fitness levels.

“We’ve had a really big week in terms of the levels of what they got up to, and the kilometers they’ve done, so it’s the first of getting ready for the challenge of four weeks away.

“It was a decent workout, apart from the result.”

Unfortunately, Newcastle did not come away from this match unscathed. Joelinton, who had played well up to that point, was forced off early in the first half with a thigh problem.

He initially tried to play on but Bruce pulled him for Dwight Gayle soon after receiving treatment. Though it doesn’t appear to be a serious injury as Joelinton wanted to carry on. Bruce didn’t seem overly concerned when asked about the injury:

“Well, he wanted to carry on which tells me that it’s not that serious but it’s obviously a concern.

“We’ll not know until we scan him and give the results out in the next couple of days.”

Newcastle currently have two players out injured along with three fit first-team goalkeepers self-isolating due to Karl Darlow’s positive Covid test. Martin Dubravka has had a procedure done on his foot.

He put out a post on his Instagram account showing him in the hospital giving a thumbs up. He simply added ‘Hope to be back soon!’ Martin is expected to be out until the end of August.

The other injured Magpie is Elliot Anderson, who is on rest duty with a hip problem. It’s been a chronic issue for the 18-year-old over the past few months so hopefully, a month of rest will do the trick.

Bruce also announced that Florian Lejeune is headed back to Alaves on a permanent transfer. The Frenchman didn’t travel to York this afternoon. Local lad Kell Watts got a full run-out as he played on the left and then the middle of the back three.

The 21-year-old, who has spent the previous two seasons on various loan spells, was one of the bright spots on the afternoon. When asked about the young defender, Bruce confirmed that he plans on taking a long look at him in pre-season:

“I think it’s important we have a look at him and see what he’s got, he’s had a successful loan spell at Plymouth last season.”

“I thought he did OK today, it was an ideal opportunity to have a good look at him we will do over pre-season.”

In addition to Watts getting a look, circumstances dictated that Dan Langley was in goal for the entire match. Max Thompson was on the bench in what must have been a special moment for the 16-year-old.

Langley played very well making a few good stops. He couldn’t do anything about the goal as it was a superb header from Duckworth. Bruce was pleased with the 20-year-old’s efforts on the day:

“Langley did well the young lad, he made a save in the first half and didn’t have much to do apart from that but it was a great header for the goal.

“He can be very pleased with his debut.”

Yeah it seems like something has definitely happened for him to be so overlooked. It is only a complete guess, but that story he shared about being picked after a bad injury I feel has something to do with it.

Which games did people find exciting at the Euros? Did people actually enjoy any of the England games/performances? I thought England were really boring.
Best game for me was Switzerland vs France. I also enjoyed every Italy game apart from Italy v Wales which was boring.

BM….re Rafa…yes..I was alluding to Flo did not look happy under Bruce and was maybe waiting for Rafa to come back and now that it is not happening he wants to leave…permanently. Their were know to be some that still kept in contact with him…Longstaff being one as well if I recall and seems like perhaps Bruce does not like that either.
Jail….re Carroll…i think he may have been one to let his feelings known to a few….Bruce did say he could not have done without all his help….perhaps a bit sarcastic??? He did not look happy after the incidents took place in the spring either.

Personally I think Lejeune is our best CB but clearly Bruce doesn’t rate technical CB’s and prefers big lump it types in the same mould he was – doubt we’re going to get more than a few million from Alaves – we’d be better off selling Hendrick if we’re that desperate for a few million

Lejeune, paid the price after calling Bruce out . Sent abroad, and did great, now Bruce getting is own back, how spiteful. Just been watching Lejeune’s goals against Everton, Pickford was livid. 😀

If Bruce didn’t ridiculously throw him into 4 games in the space of 11 days just 1 week after coming back from an acl injury, I’m sure lejeune would have still done great for us. Sadly Bruce’s wisdom with injuries meant he was not prepared physically or mentally and that reflected in his performances. If his injury was handled better I’m sure he’d have featured more and been a solid center back for us again.

Munster – compared to what we have he’s a world beater – obviously he isn’t going to get signed by a top team but our current lot would barely get into another prem team ( should have sold lascelles when he was worth some money).

Certain players just don’t fit with a manager for whatever reason. I used to really like Mbemba but Rafa never really took to him, and Schar turned out to be a decent like for like replacement. The Lascelles/Lejeune partnership was immense when we still played with a back four under Rafa, although I’m not sure if all the injuries have caught up with Lejeune or not, and the pace of the game in Alaves probably suits him better. I don’t mind him going as long as we bring in a younger player of similar quality. For me central defence definitely needs looking at, as Schar could be on his way out and Fernandez won’t be a first choice for too much longer, so we need to integrate 1 or 2 new signings this season if we can.

    EGB,
If you’re still about, seems like there is a handful of players on contracts, I know Julio Arca, the former mackem was well paid at So Shields,
Q: ”What is the lowest English league where the footballers play full time?”
”All the League Two clubs are full-time, more than half the Conference National teams are, and there’s even a handful of full-time clubs and players on full-time contracts in the National League regional, so sixth tier”

56 people in the Ed Harrison FFL so far, with (I think?) about four weeks until the season kicks off, so that’s pretty good. Would be nice to get to round 100, but that’s just me being greedy.

Thank you to everyone who has joined up so far. Our real season might turn out to be crap, but at least the fantasy season might be a bit of fun to keep our minds off it for a while 🙂

Nothing really, last year I planned my transfers six weeks ahead on a bit of paper, this year I’ve copied the shirts from the FPL site and copied them on to an XL page, just looks canny good and it saves you rubbing out names when players get injured etc.

Is it the camera angle or a photoshop job? Bruceyboy seems to have lost a few feet of his belly. Maybe he’s left his money belt on the bus.

Btw, I didn’t see the York match but was the team set up the Bruce way?

Does it have to be that Bruceyboy’s man management skills aren’t what he thinks they are or could it be that some players don’t see what they’re missing.

Tricky but I’d go for option one. He’s not as good as he thinks he is.

Cheers, but I’m not sure what you mean about the test trial. One of the scaffs was at Wembley on Sunday, passed his test coming out on Tuesday, failed a lateral flow test today, passed a PCR test today and then failed the NHS one they had flown out. We’ll just have to see how many people he’s managed to affect.
