Bruce Provides Update On Covid Situation, Dubravka, And Explains Shelvey’s Absence

Newcastle forward Joelinton was forced off with a thigh problem during Sunday’s friendly at York City. The injury doesn’t appear to serious though the full extent won’t be known until later in the week.

The Brazilian joins a growing list of Magpies unable to get their pre-season preparations in due to either injury or illness. With Karl Darlow’s positive Covid test, Newcastle have three goalkeepers self-isolating until next week with Mark Gillespie and Freddie Woodman considered close contacts.

Bruce has confirmed that Darlow is still the only Magpie to come down with a positive test after a rigorous few days of testing. The Shields Gazette has published the following update from Bruce on the situation:

“Karl Darlow, unfortunately, picked up Covid. So we felt it best that the people who were close to him, i.e. during dinner, self-isolate, so we pulled them out of the group.

“The group has been tested for the last three days. Thankfully everybody else is negative. It shows you we’re not immune to it. We’ve tried our utmost, but it still lingers around, which is difficult to manage.”

They join Martin Dubravka on the sidelines. The 32-year-old is on the mend after another foot injury and had an operation over the weekend. The length of Dubravka’s absence will be known in the coming days. Recent reports have him out until the end of August.

Bruce has revealed that the injury is similar to the one Dubravka suffered prior to last season. That kept him out for around three months. Bruce said the following about his first-choice keeper:

“Well, we’ll not know the extent of the operation with Dubravka (until later today).

“He picked up something similar last pre-season, running in the woods. He complained of it during the Championships, so we’ll not know until the next 24 to 48 hours, and then we’ll see how long he’s out and what we need to do.

“I understand Freddie will be a little bit disappointed at this moment, but I’ve got to do what’s best for Newcastle, and I’ll always do that. The club comes first.”

It could be a bit more serious than originally reported for Martin. That has a knockdown effect for Freddie Woodman, whose loan move to Bournemouth has been delayed. He’s not only been kept behind but now must self-isolate for ten days so his frustration is understandable.

Hopefully, Woodman’s loan move gets back on track at some point. It would be difficult for him to be kept in reserve should Dubravka’s injury be long-term as he could be behind both Darlow and Gillespie.

Bruce has also provided an update on Jonjo Shelvey. The playmaker was not involved yesterday but traveled with the group. Jonjo suffered a calf injury prior to pre-season and is in a battle to be ready for the start of this campaign.

The Chronicle has published the following from Bruce on Shelvey:

“Jonjo hurt himself before pre-season doing running on his own. He hurt his calf so he’ll not be around for a while just yet.”

????????: Arsenal are expected to announce the signing of midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga from Anderlecht for a fee around £18m.

    Follow for more.

Hopefully with him confirmed and the incoming Aouar Willock will be on the move

C Bob……. Totally agree about the difficulty to enthuse whilst we are still owned by Ashley and managed by Bruce. What is the point of starting a new season with the same remit . Until we are sold our great club has had its expectations lowered which was always Ashley’ s intention and now the main job of his lacky collaborator.

Signing Willock would be great but that guy would have a lot of weight on his shoulders. He single handedly saved pur asses and Bruces last season. If i was him would i want to come back? Doubt it

I can’t see the Arsenal signing of Albert Sambi will affect any decision relating to Willock other than getting him off their payroll. It’s not as though Willock was a key squad member.

Signing midfielders tho is a great sign that it shouldn’t be to long before Willock is back in the black and white

Duplicity and self serving behaviour by anyone indicates a lack of honesty and integrity, whether it be the EPL or members of government whose help has been sought by NUFC fans.

Can’t argue against that. The gooners are sure to be careful with finances and thus, cost control.

Did Shelvey not injure himself last season doing the same thing coming back early and doing training?

He never ever looks 100% fit always seems to be carrying some form of injury

Lesh, me old cock sparrow, you might need to consider changing your meds? 😉

You’re reading things that aren’t there.

(1). I never used the words media bias. I stated that the filter on here seems to have a political bias when it comes to what gets moderated.

(2). I never asked for anyone to be moderated. I pointed out that a lot of political points were raised throughout the day, that weren’t moderated.

That amounts to 2 perfectly true statements made by me, that you have misread and misrepresented. Where have we seen that before hmmm? 😉

If pre season warm up training’s bringing injuries with it, there must be big questions about the training routines?

Watch a video last night about club goers in the Toon queuing before mid-night to get into a night club in the centre of town on a famous street. Mostly seemed to be 20 year olds. Massive queue folk should to shoulder and none of the wearing masks.

Government in my opinion are making a backside of this and further mega problems will occur

As far as your 1 and 2 are concerned, the words in each amount to one and the same. My words could be applied.

And it’s too nice a day to waste time discussing sophistry.

    Training routines??

I thought it was established that until Mr Jones arrived, they consisted of running around then the ball chucked in the middle while he shouts “play”??

Jones introduced routines that the players latched onto, enjoyed and the results improved.

Unfortunately due to his England stint, he’s not around at moment, so don’t expect improvement until his return.

So what, another rag I don’t read.

The source is irrelevant, it doesn’t belong on here is my principle point. Can we stop now?

Leave the politics where it belongs, in the gutter with most of the press and all the politicians.

    Duplicity —————- hahahahaha.

Blog Editors often mention the news sources as a background/source of information and then do a post about it. Just about every football related source and all the mainstream newspapers are mentioned.
So no problems when THEY mention lets say the Daily Mail or the Telegraph. No problems at all. Nobody says a thing about the sources the Editors use.

Now a poster coming along and whether by accident or deliberately mentions the Daily Mail or the Telegraph they are immediately insulted by cries of – brown shirt/fascist/Nazi/racist/ Daily Hiel/ Zieg Heil etc etc

Duplicity!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Give me a break. Hate and spite methinks.

Blog editors should address this -if not for the above – but to follow what Ed has laid down as blog rules. (continually flaunted – bordering on “pi** taking”.)

Think if the Editors were called brown shirts the offender(s) would get a ban – and rightly so.

Joe Willock- few have posted that in addition to him we need another differing type of midfielder who can carry the ball better.
He is superb at ghosting into areas – taking the opposition by surprise by his sudden appearance from nowhere – so to speak.

Who – I have got no idea -we clearly will not buy a star for mega millions – as Mr Tubbs will not provide the cash.

I am sure Shelvey is the type of player that will insist that he can only get fir by playing games. The problem is, he only looks fit by the end of the season.
