Ashley Does U-Turn On Sanctioning £4m Deal For 27-Year-Old – Report

Late last month, it was reported that Mike Ashley had nixed a £4m move for Southampton midfielder Mario Lemina due to him turning 28 in September.

Newcastle had been monitoring Lemina’s situation for months with Steve Nickson personally scouting him during a match in May. He was on loan with a purchase option at Fulham, who failed to beat the drop ending any chance of making the deal permanent.

The Gabon international is back at Southampton with an uncertain future. He’s entering the final year of the five-year contract he signed in 2017 when he joined from Juventus for a then-record fee for the Saints.

He’s spent the previous two seasons out on loan with no future at St Mary’s. Newcastle made their move last month with talks of a swap deal. However, Southampton only wanted a cash deal which Ashley was unwilling to sanction.

The Mail is reporting that Newcastle have reopened talks for the midfielder with Ashley having been persuaded to soften his stance. Discussions were held on Wednesday over a £4m deal. Newcastle are offering a three-year contract to Lemina.

It could come down to terms as Nice has a standing offer of £3.5m on the table. Newcastle are currently trying to tempt him to Tyneside to bolster Steve Bruce’s midfield options.

On Sunday, Bruce expressed concern about the position saying the following:

“We’re very, very short in the middle of the park at the minute. Very, very short.

“It’s something we need to address.”

Newcastle are still waiting on a decision from Arsenal over a Joe Willock loan move. There have also been reports of talks with Chelsea for Conor Gallagher and Midtjylland over Jens Cajuste, who is rated at between £11-13m.

Bruce revealed there were a few things ‘bubbling away’ in addition to Willock after the York City friendly. This move for Lemina could be one of the targets Bruce was referencing as he seems focused on midfield additions at the moment.

Earlier on Wednesday, Brentford announced their record signing of Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer on a five-year deal. He was reportedly one of Newcastle’s top defensive targets.

Maybe this u-turn by Ashley on Lemina indicates a slight change in transfer plans this summer after the adjournment of the arbitration hearing to early next year. Hopefully, that’s the case and we can get some sorely-needed new faces through the door.

It isn’t about whether it makes a difference or not. It’s about not letting our standards as fans drop to the same as Ashleys where we just accept that Lemina is the type of market we should be in. Why should we accept that? Because Ashley says so? No thank you.

He doesn’t need to throw big money around, just improve on last season. Spending the money the club makes, which i’m sure is more than what will actually be spent this window. It isn’t about ‘sticking a conservatory onto a house you’re selling’, it’s about keeping the house to a decent standard similar to how you wouldn’t let a window stay smashed if you were selling it.

I understand where toon22 comes from even if it is over the top sometimes, but I don’t believe the legal work etc is a big conspiracy either.

I’m not beating myself up about it, i’m just not going to get sucked into thinking the very minimum business we do for sub-par players and spending the minimum is suddenly good and we should be thankful for it ‘considering’. I would rather stay wanting more from the owner and club, even if that’s unrealistic.

Also please don’t talk down to me by ending your point with ‘end of’, it’s a discussion that I can reply to if I want to thank you.

Result! – oh good morning everyone.

Ta da! Nick de Marco agrees with me that the Man C v PL judgement was significant for our case as it highlighted it’s “being in the public interest”. I’ll retire on that one 😀

Oh wait, I’m already retired, never mind I’ll drink out on it when I’m brave enough to drink out again 😆

Must be getting a grip of this legal stuff! 😉

If the club is spending its own cash then this won’t impact on Ashley or his sale. He will only baulk at putting more of his own money in. He could perhaps get the club to spread the cost of any new players rather than pay up front, although that could affect the sale price if the new owners end up taking on the club with greater liabilities than were initially agreed. If that is the case then this limbo state could seriously damage the club. The other PL clubs must love this.

Allowing Ashley to do basically nothing because he’s waiting for the takeover and thinking that ‘it is what it is’ until the takeover happens is a dangerous game and nonsense in my eyes. How long does that wait go on for? We just let the club stagnate in limbo for all that time? What if we do that and then a sale never comes? Will Ashley then make up for all that under spending and developing whilst waiting for the takeover? Or will we be in a much worse state and then never be able to catch up?

This scenario is actually perfect for Ashley

Under no real pressure to spend because of the takeover hes getting away with murder

How much money will the club be making during this period that won’t be getting spent and what is happening with the money?

How can we not sign a few quality players of Willock level that would improve the club but also get agreement from the new owners that this would be okay?

Just spending 4 million on Lemina is not acceptable especially if there is money sitting there that doesn’t get spent the cheap option is killing us

    OP

Count me out of living on blind hope…

I’ve supported the club for 60 years and I had every ounce of blind hope knocked out of me decades ago.

    But…

I ain’t joining the crowd who claim we are a busted flush, shell of a club, and the biggest joke since Bob Hope.

We haven’t won the league since 1927, the FA Cup since 1955 and sweet FA since 1969. The way some go on you’d think we used to be a ‘top club’ banging in trophies and titles for fun when in reality the ONLY thing that we can claim to be near the top at is the loyalty of the fans, especially away, even through thin & thin.

Kidding ourselves we are a top club is exactly what causes some of the ludicrous ‘busted flush of a club’ claptrap.

We are a Premier League club, have big gates, a fantastic away following and some top players like Dubs, ASM, Miggy and Wilson.

Until MA is out, and hopefully PIF takeover, or some other multi-billionaire owner, we haven’t got a cat’s hell’s chance of seriously challenging the top 6.

    I hate that…

But it won’t make me trash our club to all and sundry.

ALL clubs have lost millions in income during the pandemic.
    .

MA has said – whether you believe it or not – that the club can spend what is can afford from it’s net income. That net income, like every club, will be far less this year than last.

What part of that don’t some fans get?

Careful Bills you’re sounding a bit like Simon Jordan there. I don’t think the majority of fans still consider us to be competing with the top 6 year in year out. We are just wanting a club that at least looks to improve year after year with some form of ambition. We don’t have either at the moment and it’s not delusional or asking too much to want that. I don’t think the majority of fans are trashing the club that is Newcastle United either, they’re trashing what it is becoming under bad ownership and decisions being made.

Seems a few are happy to moan when it suits them, yet scream and stamp their feet if others moan about something different.

I’m not going to tell people they can or can’t do something whilst I’m doing or not doing it myself.

Lots of fans have have up time and money protesting against Ashley and other so called fans want to tell them to “stop moaning”, they’ve earned that right even if others don’t agree.

The reason for the trophy drought is down to chronic mismanagement at the club for the past 50 years. The one time we showed some ambition in the 90’s we nearly made it, only for SJH and Fat Fred to bottle it by going PLC and putting financial handcuffs on the club. And bringing in Kenny D to dismantle our team. In 1969 we were 2nd in overall trophy wins to Villa. That’s all in our lifetime. The consortium see this potential, as do most fans, but Ashley decided 14 years ago it was a gamble too far for him. NUFC has more potential than ManCity, even now. It just needs some investment and TLC.

Has “the club” as in Newcastle United lost that much money though? All the staff have been on furlough all year and the club never sees the match day revenue as its outsourced to Ashley’s company so we never see the benefit of that money anyway

Its only Ashley only losing out and hes had his hands in the till enough 🙂

Still can’t see why we can’t just do what every other team does and pay for players over 5 years

You’ve missed the point of my post utterly and completely.

I want us to improve year in year out – who doesn’t??

If you think the amount of fans trashing us in the media doesn’t affect other clubs fans opinion of us as a club you need to give your head a shake.

If you want an example of how NUFC fans have reacted in the past you only have to look at the discontent and criticism that surrounded Bobby Robson when he finished 5th – he ended up getting sacked a few games into the following season.

    And…

Plenty of fans were happy about it.

How daft does that seem now?
