Newly Reported Asking Price For Midfielder Could Be A Cause For Concern

Steve Bruce mentioned ‘one or two things bubbling away’ on Sunday after the York City friendly. His reference to being very short in the midfield hinted at other midfielders in addition to Joe Willock being targetted.

There have been reports since the weekend that Newcastle are in discussions for three midfielders. Conor Gallagher is a loan option with him not ready to break into Chelsea’s formidable midfield.

The other two targets would be permanent signings. Jens Cajuste is a Swedish international playing for the Danish club Midtjylland. The 21-year-old fits Newcastle’s profile but would come at a steep price.

French club Rennes have already had a £10m bid knocked back forcing them to move on to other targets. Midtjylland are holding out for around £12-13m for their defensive midfielder with five Premier League clubs including Newcastle on his trail.

Last night, news surfaced that Newcastle were back in for Southampton’s Mario Lemina. Newcastle exited talks last month after Mike Ashley refused to sanction a cash deal for the 27-year-old.

The Mail claimed The Magpies are in discussions over a £4m deal while offering Lemina a three-year contract. However, The Athletic is reporting that Southampton want £8m for the player they paid over £15m for in 2017.

That could change everything Lemina is no longer a bargain at that fee considering he has just one year left on his contract.

This is a distressing update for a club that has made no first-team additions ahead of next season. If Ashley is willing to part with £8m for Lemina then great. Watford and Nice are also in the running so the competition could keep his price tag higher than initially reported.

This higher fee may only serve to delay Lemina’s departure. He has not been handed a squad number at St Mary’s though has been involved in training. Maybe Newcastle can split the difference with a £6m offer to get Lemina in quickly.

The Chronicle claims Bruce is confident of two or three signings within the next couple of weeks. But with the window open until August 31st, Ashley may be tempted to wait it out to see if he can lower the price tags of some of his targets.

Whatever the case may be, nothing seems imminent at the moment.

    From the Beeb

‘Arsenal are preparing a bid of £30m for Sheffield United’s English goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, 23. (Talksport)’

‘However, the Gunners have been told to raise their offer for Ramsdale to more than £32m after having two offers rejected. (Times)’

How is it when there’s talk of Woodman and Darlow, the numbers are single millions?

And, it looks as though Charmless is playing clever clogs by expressing interest in several midfielders. Why doesn’t the clown realise he’s out of his depth, especially when he knows he hasn’t got the money to play with.

We’ll likely end up with nobody that’ll add value to the squad.

Lesh, it was of course only her “interim” report, but as you say it looks very promising. The fans survey they were running only closes today, so they still have to evaluate that, then use the Summer (as she states) to finalise the groups proposals “in the Autumn”.

So nowt going to happen too quickly.

I’m interested to see how the PL react to all this. They are being told by the courts to “open up”, being threatened by government with a “regulator” and basically being generally described as not fit for purpose.

It might do them a lot of good, if they now very quickly and efficiently finish their disputes with Man C and NUFC and let the football take the stage front and centre instead of them.

If they do their usual heads in sand option, I think they will be presiding over their own future extinction event?

Under Rafa in 2018 we had the youngest team in all the premier league. 3 years later Bruce has the 17th youngest squad. Staggering how quickly we went from youngest to 4th oldest. And with him dishing out new contracts to all our older players it looks like the trend will continue. If he takes us down with this unsellable Dads army we will be screwed. We will resemble his Sunderland, Wigan, Birmingham, Hull teams that went down, having nobody to sell.

I hold my hand up and say that I wanted SBR gone upstairs at end of previous season as he was losing players and fans alike – as i recall loads had left ground at end of last home match totally disenchanted with that season

The manner and timing of it however were totally shoddy and he deserved far better but i am not sentimental and at 71 with serious illnesses he should have been replaced gracefully in recognition of the job he had done for us and not shamed

There were alreadyfurtehr issues emerging at the very start of the season he was sacked with Dyer and Bellamy and even Shearer had been dropped for Kluivert. He had clashed at times with fans

Interestingly he never got another manager’s job after that and maybe if he had been at any other club than his beloved NUFC he might have decided that it was time fr him to go

Clearly bringing in Souness to replace him was a massive mistake as he was unwanted by fans and players although the plan had been for him to sort out dressing room – petrol on the flames!!

    Bob,

Genuine question and I’m probably wrong or read it wrong, but in the Man City case weren’t they basically told that the outcome had to be made public in the end and not the actual details of the case and hearing? As they’re very different and obviously the details being made public is what we really want. I’m probably wrong or read into it wrong though but I thought it was a case of Man City and the league wanted everything including the outcome held privately, but were told the outcome (not the details of the case) would be public as it was in the publics interest.

Or, if there a more classical literature origin?

As I said, TC’s interim report’s gone to Dowden so there’s no hiding from it as I’m sure she’ll follow its progress with interest.

However, she’s got a reputation as being a reasonable old fashioned sort, one who doesn’t always do as she’s told and some of her fellow MPs wouldn’t be disappointed if were to lose her seat.

We can but wait as the pressure on the EPL seems to be mounting.

    Adam, yes and no.

They judged that items of a significant confidential nature should not be made public.

    But other stuff should be.

Who decides what in that case is significant is anyones guess??

I know you asked Clevelelys but I think the judge said that the decision and the reasons for it were in the public interest but that when made public, due regard must be made to redacting confidential items.

I don’t think it said that arbitration should be conducted in open court but the outcome is of public interest

Add Lemina to the squad and the average age probably goes up and Bruce has the 18th youngest squad in the League.

When you see the detritus of clubs that Bruce has left behind such as Hull, Wednesday and the Mackems that really is scary.

    “Other clubs are available”

Interesting concept. I know NUFC supporters who have stopped following or reverted to supporting a local non-league outfit, but none who have gone on to actively support another PL club.

    Anyone seen that happen?

If Lemina is replacing Hendrick then that’s fantastic business

If Lemina is coming with Willock that would be great business

If Lemina is coming instead of Willock then that’s poor business

Basically in all of these scenarios can we replace Hendrick please?

I know we are not supposed to talk about him but what are peoples thoughts on Rafa’s first 3 signings for Everton?

Begovic – I think we have better keepers
Townsend – Would not have been that keen on taking him might be alright for backup now
Gray – I remember we were linked but he’s done about as much as Atsu did at the Toon so far in his career

Everton obviously have a decent and a squad that does lack depth when injuries hit so I guess hes filling the backup slots first

Hendricks not going anywhere. He’s been the worst player in the premier league for a few years. Who is stupid enough to pay his wages? Lemina isn’t good enough for Southampton or wanted by any other top flight teams. He was Fulham’s equivalent of Hendrick last season, although obviously not as bad. But as Adam said He’s past his sell by date and in the process of going off. Each year he gets a bit worse. Brucie loves these types. I think he hit the jackpot with Bent and sees himself as some sort of maverick at rejuvenating older players.

Interesting situation at Everton – Townsend and Gray as wingers with Calvert Lewin as CF.
Is Rafa going to attack more – more than defending most of the game and hoping for a breakaway goal.
Interesting seeing what Type of team he will try and create and will it be successful. (and I suppose a comparison will ensue from his time here to what he is doing now.)

I’m not impressed Lee. Although like you say maybe he just wants backups. Its usually defensive signings Rafa excells at. I expect Keane or the existing defenders to look like world beaters next season.
