Newcastle Confirm Florian Lejeune Has Joined Alaves For An Undisclosed Fee

Newcastle United have confirmed that defender Florian Lejeune has joined Alaves on a permanent deal. The 30-year-old spent last season on loan with the La Liga club making 36 appearances.

Florian returned to Newcastle this summer with just one season remaining on his contract. He was left out of the pre-season friendly at York City over the weekend with Steve Bruce confirming that his move back to Alaves was imminent.

Lejeune was signed from Eibar in 2017 but suffered two anterior cruciate injuries limiting his appearances in his first two seasons. He returned in December 2019 from his second injury and was quickly thrust back into duty during the heavy holiday schedule.

In January of that season, Florian scored his first two goals as a Magpie in the final minutes at Everton to rescue a 2-2 draw in one of the most miraculous finishes to a Premier League match in recent memory.

Here is the statement from Newcastle on the transfer:

Florian Lejeune has completed a permanent move to Alavés – where he spent last season on loan – for an undisclosed fee.

The 30-year-old Frenchman joined the Magpies from Eibar in the summer of 2016 and made 24 appearances as United finished tenth in the Premier League.

Unfortunately, the 2017/18 campaign saw him suffer two anterior cruciate ligament injuries but he recovered to score his first two goals for the club in a stunning comeback at Everton in January 2020, before heading to La Liga with Los Babazorros on a temporary basis last term.

Lejeune made 46 appearances in all competitions for Newcastle. Everybody at the club wishes him well for the future.

This is the confirmation from Alaves that Florian Lejeune has returned on a three-year contract.

Here is a translation of the above tweet:

Florian Lejeune returns to Deportivo Alavés.

The French player signs for three seasons and reinforces the Albiazul defense.

We wish Florian the best of luck in his return to Spain.

Can hardly blame Clark for wanting to leave Liverpool would provide a much better education even if they don’t play him

Bruce will never give a young player from the academy a chance because they need coaching and guidance Willock only done well because he has already been coached elsewhere and just did his own thing

Would like to think Jones would know the value of having young energy in the team Elliot Anderson and Matty need loaned out if they aren’t going to feature

That’s one decent player that gone out. Should have been Lascelles or Clark leaving.

Lemina coming in is good news. Now we need to let Hayden go for £13m and sign Ibrahima Sissoko, Willems, Van Aanholt, Shaqiri and Ross Barkley and Willock on loan.

Would hope with Lejuene away we could move a player into the squad such as Willock

I would keep young Watts as the CB option keep him around the first team playing 3 at the back is probably the ideal way to blood a young defender as he will always have cover

It speaks volumes when the son of a local hero decides he’s better off elsewhere.

Shame and surely there should’ve been big questions asked and dealt with to prevent him going. But oh no, there are more pressing matters for Charmless to be attending to.

What I would say about Lemina is he would provide a bit of pace in midfield so when we win the ball he would be away setting up attacks

Him Willock and Almiron together would be a really hard working and aggressive midfield 3 with Almiron as the no10

    Jail last thread

I said “interestingly” in the comment you referred to because i thought it was – in the sense that if so many folk think he went too early and had still a lot to offer why didn’t get another job………….

The extent and reoccurance of his illness etc wasn’t then as public as i recall

I only commented because once again some are posting what isn’t the only view of SBR’s sacking and there are equally valid alternative views of an undoubted great man and his leaving of the Club. There were many not happy with how the previous season had gone – compared to now of course it would have been amazning but that was then this is now

It would have been better for all had he moved upstairs ( had he been willing) and I totally agree that the manner of his sacking was appalling, insensitive and avoidable

Having supported this club for over 50 years through mostly thin times i feel i have as valid a viewpoint as any other fan and don’t really care if it isn’t in line with yours or others as this is only about different opinions

I think we all agree that SBR needed to make way for a younger manager.
We all agree that the way his departure was handled was appalling.
We all agree he should have been retained in some capacity.
We all agree there should have been a succession plan.
And I think we all agree that the whole episode was just another f**k up in the long list of them at SJP.
The club will never progress until some brains and class enter the board room.

If that’s true about Bobby Clark then that news is as bad as any of the recent takeover news. When will we ever retain what little talent we do produce locally. And the son of a former player. What a vote of confidence that is in the current mgt team. We are truly f**ked as a sporting entity. Pathetic. Even if he never makes it, we should be the ones to find out.

    cleveleysbob,
Me and the same group of lads have been going to the cinema together to watch the Star Wars movies since we went to see Return of the Jedi on our own way back then, after the last one and at 50 years of age almost, we’ve vowed not to go again, an elderly Han Solo almost finished us, that last one definitely did and especially now with all the spin offs it’s too hard to keep track.

Best team once the two signings have been made should look like this:

    Darlow

    Manquillo Schar Fernandez Ritchie

    Lemina

    Fraser Willock Almiron Saint-Maximin

    Wilson

Still lots of work to do though. Those players would probably be enough to keep us up though.

There were plenty of fans around me who were moaning about SBR to one degree or another – that’s just the way fans are when their desires/expectations aren’t being met.

He finished 3rd, 4th & 5th and to many that was going backwards not progress.

That’s why I have to smile when I hear “all we want to do is compete with the top 6”.

    I say that myself…

But the truth is success and failure is relative, ask Liverpool fans who won European Cups but not the Prem for yonks.

Failure for SBR was finishing 5th and of those fans on here who were around at the time many will have expected far more, never mind wanted more.

Sunderland fans would give their eye teeth to be battling and surviving relegation in the Prem.

    For example.

Not sure bout the validity of the Lemina story but if he signs it will be 3 years too late.
Typical Bruce signing though, a player past his best but with plenty of experience.
    Just not good enough imo.
Stop footing about and bring Willock in, its clear to me that Arsenal are looking elsewhere for a replacement, they don`t rate him do they.

Arsenal have had Willock since he was a kid and you have to ask why, even after scoring 8 in 12, they still don’t rate him.

Hopefully, the goals don’t dry up and we end up with a wishy washy player who contributes little when he isn’t scoring.

For me, the jury is still out on Willock despite the fantastic goal scoring run he had. That’s why I would go for a loan even if he was £20M.

The folly was appointing Souness – a good appointment ( not beyond us at that time) instead would have at least sustained us and hopefully been built on in coming years

Not so sure we would have escaped Ashley as SJH was looking for out but maybe he could have been priced out? – we’ll never know

Gang up on one poster, it’s fine for you to throw abuse at him but if he defends himself he’s the instigator, nasty blah blah blah.

You’ve shown who you are and what type of man you are by attacking someone within minutes of being offered sympathies by him.

The lot of you bring the blog down, you blame others but none of you can let it go because you’re small weak minded men.

Pure hypocrites, offended by everything yet happily post filth and bile, you lot bring the blog to the gutter, no wonder you’re all fans of Jib.
