Newcastle Down Doncaster 3-2 At The Keepmoat Stadium

The Magpies have defeated Doncaster 3-2 at the Keepmoat Stadium. Callum Wilson got Newcastle going after a slow start to the half. The match got mired after a slew of substitutions but Newcastle put in a decent display on the night.

Newcastle emerged for the second half unchanged after taking a 2-1 lead into the break. Newcastle were a bit sloppy with the ball to start the half.

However, in the 56th minute, the Magpies went on a break resulting in a cool Callum Wilson finish to pad the lead. Ryan Fraser got the assist to add to his first-half goal as he found our new number 9 in the box. Wilson did the rest.

Soon after Wilson’s goal, Steve Bruce was forced to bring Federico Fernandez on for Isaac Hayden, who had picked up a slight knock. Fernandez went in on the right side of the back three.

At the 66 minute mark, Bruce withdrew Saint-Maximin and Wilson. On came Matty Longstaff and Dwight Gayle with Sean Longstaff pushing up the pitch. Paul Dummett made way for Ciaran Clark a few minutes later.

Soon after Ryan Fraser sailed a shot over the crossbar from 10 yards out, Doncaster cut Newcastle’s lead to 1. Dan Langley couldn’t keep Omar Bogle’s header from getting in to make it 3-2.

In the 76th minute, Bruce brought 20-year-old Jack Young on for Ryan Fraser. He also soon brought on Kell Watts and Tom Allan for Lascelles and Murphy. Ciaran Clark moved to the middle of the back three while Allan played at right wing-back.

Matt Bondswell was brought on for Lewis to play on the left to make it three of the U23s to get into the match. The flurry of subs affected the flow of the game with not much to shout about as Newcastle kept the slim advantage until the final whistle.

Biggest surprise for me was that Hendrick played the whole game, hardly heard his name mentioned, wonder if TFG didn’t realise he was on the pitch! 🙂

Bruceless probably thought that Hendick had already gone to get the full time pasties.

I wonder what Wilson goal was like. Our new no.9. i would have loved to be there. The atmosphere is fantastic at away matches, so much more for the team, they never give up chanting, it’s a long time since i was at one.

    Great away support as always!

Hoping Lewis will be similar to Murphy and really push on this season. Confidence makes a huge difference but like Murphy he could thrive as a wing back and slowly improve his defensive game too.

Fraser could be like a new signing but he could easily be a waste of a squad place too.

Hendrick, no matter the opposition is pretty much guaranteed to be the worst player on the pitch.

Just want to put a word in for The Wife, I don’t see any overt favouritism in her posts.

Although I modestly have to add that I’m probably her favourite. 🙂

Our away support is the best in football. They make half the noise at opposition grounds, and 90% of the noise at St Jameses. Ashley can’t break their spirit. He can not. They’ll be there in full voice v West Ham, urging on the side and also giving the owner exactly the encouragement he too deserves, a raucous 90 minute serenade inviting him to jeff right off. Those lads are the salt of the earth.

    NY,

Aye, I’ve always wondered how the ‘undisclosed fee’ works in practice. The 2 clubs must agree to it, so if one club requests the other not to disclose fee do they have to oblige?

Great goal. Got some good players in the group, players who can be a part of a top 10 side. It’s plain rotten to use them just to stay in the league, especially at a club like ours that has the capacity to get more of their calibre in. To me that’s the real horror of Ashley. Never gives the club the squad it should have, out of sheer spite and neglect.

Following the toon away is way better than watching at SJP. You stand and sing for the whole game. The humour is brilliant but more often than not the football isn’t. We invariably lose. But they still turn up, despite sweet FA to celebrate in half a century. Are we deluded? More blind loyalty and pride in where we’re from. And of course they get to drink.

I think Bruce’s head is so full of Newton Heath and what’s big club they are there is no room for the Toons history. In fact I suspect he hasn’t a clue about our history. SBR would never have underplayed our status like Bruce. Bishop will have been feeding him lines to lower our expectations.
