Bruce Gives Frustrating But Unsurprising Transfer Assessment After Doncaster Victory

Newcastle have completed their second friendly of the pre-season. The lads faired much better than last weekend’s 1-0 defeat at York City, where they spent much of the match in a lower gear.

Goals from Ryan Fraser, Sean Longstaff, and Callum Wilson thwarted a couple of comebacks from Doncaster Rovers at the Keepmoat Stadium. The match ended 3-2 in front of 3,000 traveling fans.

After the match, like last Sunday, Bruce was asked about incomings. The news is as dire as it was then with nothing imminent in the pipeline. BBC Newcastle’s Matthew Raisbeck, who does the radio commentary for NUFC, tweeted the following response from Bruce.

Bruce references the loan market and waiting on the big clubs. We know Joe Willock is Newcastle’s top target but Bruce could be referencing either Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher or Manchester United’s Axel Tuanzebe, two reported loan targets.

As for Willock, this one could go down to the wire. Bruce hinted he has received little indication from Arsenal as to their plans on the midfielder. The Northern Echo has published the following from Bruce the situation with Willock:

“With Arsenal, what are they going to do? They’ve brought in two midfield players. That’s our starting point, with Joe, because let’s be fair, he had an unbelievable three or four months with us. But there has to be a time where we know – is it going to be yes or no?

“We’re only allowed two domestic loans, and we’re only allowed one from each club. So, there has to come a time when there’s a cut-off, and we have to find out what’s happening. We’re still trying our utmost, whether it’s on loan or to buy him. We’re still trying.”

Bruce also added that the midfield is the priority as his squad is weaker than last season without Willock on board. He again referenced the low budget which seems to indicate there is little chance of Midtjylland’s Jens Cajuste being a serious target at between £12-13m.

“Midfield is the main area. We’re weaker than we were last year because we haven’t got Joe Willock.

“We need to keep improving but it’s very difficult with limited funds, but I’ll keep bashing away to try to improve us, little by little.”

Bruce also gave an update on the Magpies who were missing for tonight’s match. There were 13 players unavailable forcing Bruce to hand game time to some of the U23s. Here is some of what Bruce said about some of the missing Magpies.

“Matt Ritchie was a little bit sore after training yesterday so we weren’t going to risk that. We hope Manquillo and Joelinton will train on Monday. We’ve got Schär and Krafth back from internationals.

Bruce will get a slight boost with Fabian Schar and Emil Krafth back to start their preparations for the season. It seems like Ritchie, Manquillo, and Joelinton will be available for Rotherham on Tuesday.

We’ll have to see if enough time has passed for the self-isolating Karl Darlow, Freddie Woodman, and Mark Gillespie to make the trip to face Dan Barleser and The Millers.

That leaves Martin Dubravka, Jonjo Shelvey, and Elliot Anderson out with injuries. Miguel Almiron is still apparently resting after international duty. As for the 18-year-old Anderson, Bruce revealed he still struggling with his hip problem.

Finally, Bruce has basically confirmed that Yoshinori Muto is not in his plans. While he missed tonight’s match through a non-Covid related illness, Bruce revealed he is looking at other options for the 29-year-old.

Raisbeck tweeted the following about Muto which begs the question of whether another forward is on the radar.

Be good if they can shift Muto and bring in a replacement striker that is more like Callum Wilson, rather than Gayle

Oh God how I hate reading Bruce’s post match comments, they are so bad they’re almost fascinating. You read to see if he can be even more stupid than previously, and he never let’s you down 😀

    To all

wasn’t grandstanding but thanks for support just had to take some time and didn’t know if I wanted to contribute

It’s one thing to have fallouts with posters as we all do but with Admin well……

I’m a bit in and out anyway as time allows and if I feel I actually have something to say so often it’s just a reading catch up

    Jail

btw It wasn’t a reflection on our posts but the intervention including the riot act which I was truly gobsmacked at considering my regular attempts to defuse situations recently as I have feared Blog closing

My energy bills have just increased by 50% to £230/month. And I only live in a semi. Should have put solar panels up but difficult if you don’t know if it’s your house for life. And we’ve now been here 27 years. There’s no end to it. Now retired and not sure I’ll be able to afford energy and council tax bills long term.

    Mund – previous

Thanks for posting the twitter link for Wilson’s goal.

One thing stood out aside from the quality buildup and finish.

That was an official NUFC TV highlight from a proper camera. Why didn’t the club stream the match live as they did the last one? I don’t understand these missed opportunities at every turn by the club to do something for their supporters at home and around the world.

Magscar, I think everyone was gobsmacked, we all know what a gentleman you are, i think sometimes things get lost in translation, i understood your original post, and agreed entirely with it after all we we’re there, and that’s exactly what happened, fans get entitled, and after that brief spell where we nearly hit the top, some fans got restless, and their was a ground swell brewing, like you say it should have been done at the end of the season.

Evening Magic, absolutely, just when you think he can’t get any cheesier or more stupid, he does, even that stuff about the young lads hip injury “being a growing thing”. Makes you wish he did stand up, cause you couldn’t take him seriously as Football coach. 😀

Onmeedson- Ouch that’s a big hit, I thought mine was bad. Me and the missus’s combined pension increase this year was about £6/week, the electricity increase was higher than that on its own, so I’m now poorer than I was before I take into account the increases in Council Tax, food, petrol etc. Going to be a bad year. Last 2 or 3 weren’t bad, but taking a hit in 21/22.
Been fuming a bit today 😉

Muto is either another Luque dud or our coaches don’t know how to get the best out of him. Regardless of the reason, the list of these gets longer every season and makes it impossible to improve the squad as no one else will touch them. Everything comes down to decision making.

Muto looked a decent option when he initially came in but something didn’t work out and he struggled to adapt to the PL. I haven’t watched Eibar, but if they finished bottom they likely didn’t dominate teams and/or create lots of chances so probably not a great comparison, I.e. how well he did at Mainz
