Bruce Gives Frustrating But Unsurprising Transfer Assessment After Doncaster Victory

Newcastle have completed their second friendly of the pre-season. The lads faired much better than last weekend’s 1-0 defeat at York City, where they spent much of the match in a lower gear.

Goals from Ryan Fraser, Sean Longstaff, and Callum Wilson thwarted a couple of comebacks from Doncaster Rovers at the Keepmoat Stadium. The match ended 3-2 in front of 3,000 traveling fans.

After the match, like last Sunday, Bruce was asked about incomings. The news is as dire as it was then with nothing imminent in the pipeline. BBC Newcastle’s Matthew Raisbeck, who does the radio commentary for NUFC, tweeted the following response from Bruce.

Bruce references the loan market and waiting on the big clubs. We know Joe Willock is Newcastle’s top target but Bruce could be referencing either Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher or Manchester United’s Axel Tuanzebe, two reported loan targets.

As for Willock, this one could go down to the wire. Bruce hinted he has received little indication from Arsenal as to their plans on the midfielder. The Northern Echo has published the following from Bruce the situation with Willock:

“With Arsenal, what are they going to do? They’ve brought in two midfield players. That’s our starting point, with Joe, because let’s be fair, he had an unbelievable three or four months with us. But there has to be a time where we know – is it going to be yes or no?

“We’re only allowed two domestic loans, and we’re only allowed one from each club. So, there has to come a time when there’s a cut-off, and we have to find out what’s happening. We’re still trying our utmost, whether it’s on loan or to buy him. We’re still trying.”

Bruce also added that the midfield is the priority as his squad is weaker than last season without Willock on board. He again referenced the low budget which seems to indicate there is little chance of Midtjylland’s Jens Cajuste being a serious target at between £12-13m.

“Midfield is the main area. We’re weaker than we were last year because we haven’t got Joe Willock.

“We need to keep improving but it’s very difficult with limited funds, but I’ll keep bashing away to try to improve us, little by little.”

Bruce also gave an update on the Magpies who were missing for tonight’s match. There were 13 players unavailable forcing Bruce to hand game time to some of the U23s. Here is some of what Bruce said about some of the missing Magpies.

“Matt Ritchie was a little bit sore after training yesterday so we weren’t going to risk that. We hope Manquillo and Joelinton will train on Monday. We’ve got Schär and Krafth back from internationals.

Bruce will get a slight boost with Fabian Schar and Emil Krafth back to start their preparations for the season. It seems like Ritchie, Manquillo, and Joelinton will be available for Rotherham on Tuesday.

We’ll have to see if enough time has passed for the self-isolating Karl Darlow, Freddie Woodman, and Mark Gillespie to make the trip to face Dan Barleser and The Millers.

That leaves Martin Dubravka, Jonjo Shelvey, and Elliot Anderson out with injuries. Miguel Almiron is still apparently resting after international duty. As for the 18-year-old Anderson, Bruce revealed he still struggling with his hip problem.

Finally, Bruce has basically confirmed that Yoshinori Muto is not in his plans. While he missed tonight’s match through a non-Covid related illness, Bruce revealed he is looking at other options for the 29-year-old.

Raisbeck tweeted the following about Muto which begs the question of whether another forward is on the radar.

toon22 tells us he listens to Mozart to relax…

While he bashes his repetitive drivel out on the keyboards.

    Comedy gold…

For some reason it reminds me of Hannibal Lecter.

Although match highlights are seemingly on NUFC TV I can’t seem to access but did see interview with Ryan Fraser after game

He is saying lack of pre- season for him caused him several injury issues and he missed fans

Thought he sounded positive so hoping we see more of him and at his best in coming season- we’re gonna need it

Haven’t watched the Bruce one but don’t reckon I’ll have missed anything and wanted to stay in good mood for this Saturday morning

Good interview with Kelland Watts as well on NUFC TV -always nice to hear a geordie accent at Club

A level headed lad who comes across very well but needs regular game time at a decent loan club where he can develop further.

Unless there is a big change in the CB position it would stall his progress to stay here on fringes.

Apparently cash for Willock and loan for Maitland-Niles. Barkley on loan as well

Enjoyed watching the goals and the fans reconnecting with players

Bit surprised at Fraser having put through Wilson to then stop and admire his handiwork though but hopefully signs of a resurrection in that old Bournemouth connection albeit in a different position for him

Langley struggled with their 2 goals especially second but it’s good experience

If it has to be loans then they have to be ones that can contribute but 3 CM’s ?

Maitland Niles seems versatile so can cover I suppose but time for Barkley to regain the form he had at Everton but competing with Willock if he comes to and Longstaff to play alongside Hayden

Hope there is something in pipelne to bring in a striker

No TO and its going to be another treading water season although i am hoping for better seasons from a couple of players doubt it will be enough

I can’t see us buying Willock outright.

I doubt they will bring anyone up top in as well.

Get Willock signed and I’ll be a bit calmer, but certainly need more

I’ve read back what I said to you last night and I can see how it didn’t come across as tongue in cheek and a bit of humour as intended. If you knew me you’d know it was a humorous encouragement to move on. I do enjoy reading your posts as they’re generally on point and I can agree with your views in the main.
I’m working a lot currently and not switching off as one should, and I think my diplomacy skills suffer as a result. I have rebriefed myself accordingly!

So to that end I apologise for any offence caused.

Bruce wud be better off just talking about clubs with bigger budgets than our skinny one. That said, he’d be correct to call them. Big big clubs, but only on the basis that he calls us a big club! I think we all know we’re not as big a club as man utd
It would be just nice if we were a better run outfit, that could make them work harder for their 4-1wins, rather than just admire from afar. He needs to start talking up nufc, it’s surely as easy to talk us up as to talk us down ffs.

Thats fine and appreciated – thank you for the clarification

I had missed your intended humour and was surprised at the tone from you. Of course even with emoji’s what we post can lose something compared to face to face

Lilongwe made similar point and made sure I didn’t miss humour 🙂

I was put out but mainly at the unneccessary precipitous intervention in a discussion which did not need it if the thread of conversation had been followed rather than seemingly one post

It is not good for Admin to step in publically to take a side and maybe Jail as a stalwart of many scrapes on here might agree it was ill judged

To also give a general broadside in a post addressed to one poster was a beginners mistake and more care should have been taken

Seriously maybe it was a bad day and things have been brewing and I was posting in wrong place at wrong time

    I have to move on

I was a little confused like Lesh ?

I would prefer a loan with option as I have said before for a variety of reasons but of course doing so would limit us on other loan deals for PL players

I try not to get too carried away with speculation but you do post some interesting snippets which i am happy to take at face value 😉

It’s good to see that some misunderstandings have been clarified. Maybe folk were suffering the effect of our recent heat wave – on both sides of the Atlantic!

Anyway, reading one of your posts, I couldn’t help but notice you did impressions.

‘……the unneccessary precipitous intervention in a discussion which did not need it if the thread of conversation had been followed rather than seemingly…..’ reminded me of Sir Humphry Appleby.
