Newcastle were able to get a late equalizer against Rotherham in our third pre-season friendly. The sluggish start was turned around with the lads looking much better in the second half. However, this squad is crying out for reinforcements as it was square pegs in round holes for much of the match.
After a tepid first half, Steve Bruce made four changes to start the second half. Gillespie, Murphy, Watts, and Dummett were brought on for Woodman, Fraser, Lascelles, and Clark. The changes pushed Matt Ritchie into the midfield.
Newcastle shot out of the gate playing with much more intent than the first 45 minutes. The lads created some gilt-edged chances that Rotherham were just able to thwart.
Rotherham keeper Viktor Johansson denied Dwight Gayle from close before making a superb save on a Ferndanez header from a set piece in the 54th minute. Dwight Gayle was able to elude a few challenges in the 59th minute. However, the striker’s shot was just wide.
Bruce made two more changes in the 64th minute with Ritchie and Fernandez making way for Fabian Schar and Emil Krafth. Krafth replaced Fede on the right side of the back three while Schar went into the defensive midfield role pushing Hayden further forward alongside Longstaff.
Jeff Hendrick and Matty Longstaff made their entrances in the 72nd minute. Callum Wilson and Isaac Hayden made way which moved Sean Longstaff upfront as was the case against Doncaster.
The match lost some of its edge after the abundance of substitutions from both sides. Newcastle’s chance creation had dried up after the flurry of chances in the first 15 minutes of the half.
Joe White was brought on for Dwight Gayle in the 77th minute. It’s the first appearance for the 18-year-old which is a fantastic moment for him. A couple of minutes later Jack Young got another bow as he came on for Sean Longstaff. The moves left Young and Hendrick as the two forwards.
It was the midfielder turn striker, Jeff Hendrick, who got Newcastle level with a very nice header in the 84th minute. The match had turned into a perfunctory affair with all the changes. However, Hendrick was able to flash his header into the net from Jacob Murphy’s corner. It was an excellent header from Hendrick.
No segundo tempo, Jeff Hendrick, que estava jogando de atacante, empatou de cabeça já no fim da partida e o amistoso contra o Rotherham United terminou em 1 a 1.

That was that as the match ended 1-1 with Newcastle much improved in the second half considering the terrible start. Newcastle’s lack of depth has become desperate as Jeff Hendrick and Jack Young finished the match as forwards. Matt Ritchie, Ryan Fraser, and Fabian Schar were also played out of position in the midfield.
Hopefully, there’ll be some movement on the transfer front this week. Newcastle must get Joe Willock back, add a young athletic center-back (Axel Tuanzebe is perfect), and another forward.
