After taking a 1-0 lead into the break at Burton Albion, Newcastle added a quick goal and were able to comfortably see off the Brewers 2-0 at the Pirelli Stadium despite being without numerous stars. Jacob Murphy and Joelinton stepped up with excellent performances on the night.
Mark Gillespie for Freddie Woodman was the only change after the first half. Newcastle immediately doubled the lead with a goal from Joelinton, who headed in a lofted corner from strike partner Ryan Fraser to make it 2-0.

Bruce made two changes at the 54-minute mark taking off his strike duo of Joelinton and Fraser. On came Gayle and 18-year-old Joe White. Newcastle instantly had a chance to make it 3-0 when Schar played a nice ball over the Burton backline to Gayle but his effort went wide.
In the 63rd minute, it was more changes as Krafth, Schar, and Sean Longstaff were brought off for Jamaal Lascelles, Ciaran Clark, and Jamal Lewis. Matt Ritchie went into the midfield.
A few minutes later, Joe White struck a low left-footed volley from outside the area that was parried away by the Burton goalkeeper. Hayden’s follow-up shot was superbly blocked by a defender.
It was Matty Longstaff on for Matt Ritchie in the 76th minute. A few minutes later Kelland Watts came on for Fernandez. Tom Allan and Jack Young were on for Hayden and Murphy in the 83rd minute.
The lads were able to see out the match in their best overall performance of the pre-season. There were some outstanding individual displays on the night and hopefully, there will be some positive updates from Steve Bruce during his post-match press conference.
