Newcastle were defeated 1-0 in a previously unannounced behind-closed-doors friendly at Burnley today. A second-half strike from Jay Rodriguez was the game’s only goal bringing Newcaslte’s record to 2 wins, 1 draw, and 2 defeats this pre-season.
Jonjo Shelvey made his first appearance of the pre-season coming on for the final 30 minutes of the match. The 29-year-old had been sidelined with a calf injury suffered early in the summer.
Matty Longstaff and 18-year-old Joe White made their first starts of the pre-season. It was Matty who Shelvey replaced in the second half. White played the entire first half as a number 10 behind Joelinton. The youngster was replaced by Ryan Fraser at the break along with 8 other changes from Steve Bruce.
Here is the lineup and substitutions for today’s friendly:
Freddie Woodman (Mark Gillespie 46), Jacob Murphy (Tom Allan 46), Emil Krafth (Fabian Schär 46), Federico Fernández (c) (Jamaal Lascelles 46), Ciaran Clark (Kell Watts 55), Matt Ritchie (Jamal Lewis 46), Matty Longstaff (Jonjo Shelvey 60), Isaac Hayden (Jack Young 46), Jeff Hendrick (Sean Longstaff 46), Joe White (Ryan Fraser 46), Joelinton (Dwight Gayle 46)
Bruce is still without a number of players including Callum Wilson, Allan Saint-Maximin, Paul Dummett, Javier Manquillo, Miguel Almiron, Martin Dubravka, and Karl Darlow. Hopefully, a few of the missing Magpies will be back for the final pre-season friendly against Norwich on Saturday.
The Northern Echo is reporting that Karl Darlow is expected to return to the training ground this week. The 30-year-old tested positive for Covid during the training camp in York. He ended up needing treatment in the hospital for dehydration.
Karl appears to be on the road to back to fitness. However, he will not be cleared to participate in full training until the medical staff is convinced he’s made a full recovery. So it looks doubtful, Darlow will be ready to start against West Ham in our season opener next Sunday.
