Newcastle Lose 1-0 To Burnley In Behind-Closed-Doors Friendly As Midfielder Makes Pre-Season Debut

Newcastle were defeated 1-0 in a previously unannounced behind-closed-doors friendly at Burnley today. A second-half strike from Jay Rodriguez was the game’s only goal bringing Newcaslte’s record to 2 wins, 1 draw, and 2 defeats this pre-season.

Jonjo Shelvey made his first appearance of the pre-season coming on for the final 30 minutes of the match. The 29-year-old had been sidelined with a calf injury suffered early in the summer.

Matty Longstaff and 18-year-old Joe White made their first starts of the pre-season. It was Matty who Shelvey replaced in the second half. White played the entire first half as a number 10 behind Joelinton. The youngster was replaced by Ryan Fraser at the break along with 8 other changes from Steve Bruce.

Here is the lineup and substitutions for today’s friendly:

Freddie Woodman (Mark Gillespie 46), Jacob Murphy (Tom Allan 46), Emil Krafth (Fabian Schär 46), Federico Fernández (c) (Jamaal Lascelles 46), Ciaran Clark (Kell Watts 55), Matt Ritchie (Jamal Lewis 46), Matty Longstaff (Jonjo Shelvey 60), Isaac Hayden (Jack Young 46), Jeff Hendrick (Sean Longstaff 46), Joe White (Ryan Fraser 46), Joelinton (Dwight Gayle 46)

Bruce is still without a number of players including Callum Wilson, Allan Saint-Maximin, Paul Dummett, Javier Manquillo, Miguel Almiron, Martin Dubravka, and Karl Darlow. Hopefully, a few of the missing Magpies will be back for the final pre-season friendly against Norwich on Saturday.

The Northern Echo is reporting that Karl Darlow is expected to return to the training ground this week. The 30-year-old tested positive for Covid during the training camp in York. He ended up needing treatment in the hospital for dehydration.

Karl appears to be on the road to back to fitness. However, he will not be cleared to participate in full training until the medical staff is convinced he’s made a full recovery. So it looks doubtful, Darlow will be ready to start against West Ham in our season opener next Sunday.

    From last thread
Id guess due to the clown not having a clue what to do with him and us being short on strikers
Hes done alot better out wide and with an actual striker to play off
Oh and with Jones coaching him

Shame if Freddie doesn’t get the opportunity.

Darlow is a safe pair of hands between the sticks but would of loved for Woodman to of grabbed the opportunity with both hands and stale a claim.

It’s going to be another long season isn’t it? Desperately hoping to clinch draws and steal wins from time to time.

All about that magic accumulation of points.

I cannot think of another time a PL club has been left in such a state of limbo as we are. It all plays into MA’s hands. He spends nothing on the club and claims he’s sold it. You’d think he might want to protect that sale, make sure the buyers still want it and given they technically pulled out, maybe they don’t.

I find it hard to get excited about a season in which literally every team other than us has strengthened. We’re weaker now than we were at the end of last season….. by quite a margin.

We’re crying out for a back up striker for when Wilson inevitably misses a few games through injury. Bruce has already stated he thinks we have adequate cover up top though, so we’ll either bring in nobody or he’ll have to backtrack on his words I guess.

Been having a read of the NCSL tweets and replies and KP seems pretty downbeat about it all and the chances of it still happening compared to a couple of weeks ago.
After arbitration being delayed I’m beginning to wonder if the PIF are actually still there and this is all now about compensation. Who knows

The CAT case isn’t just about compo.

The ramifications to follow if the club wins favour with the CAT case is huge, much more than just a compo win for Ashley.

It will take the league down and hopefully Hoffman will be amongst that also with every other opposer in the mix as well.

Well we seem to be worse than weve been for a very long time on the ambition front
If such a thing was possible

Id guess hes not injured and wont play, probably waiting for some sale to another club

We will be lucky to see half of the cash end up being spent on players
Might be anothr Mitro with the lot just vanishing

given Keith has said multiple times about the many silver bullets they had in the case that he believed we all enough to down the PL – the fact he is now downbeat is a big deal.

but then again he and that Shields Gazette journo were both saying the PL will be forced to open their books within days and weeks last autumn if you remember – completely off their heads they were – ignoring lawyers and legal people who advised them that that wouldnt be the case.

That’s what the hope was and what Keith wanted and may happen but this is Ashley. I think his main concern would be compensation. The rest may come about but does it guarantee the takeover.
What if they rerun the odt, if pif are still there, and they could still say they want MBS to undergo it.

    Our full first team?

Not exactly mate considering Wilson, ASM, Almiron, Dubravka all not playing.

A front two of Joelinton and White isn’t exactly our starting strike force

Yeah. The thing that’s got me wondering (worried) is that KP was saying the same as others, that arbitration and the Cat case would be july/August after being told by someone. Who was that and were they misleading him I wonder.

Do we have any hope for a future striker coming through the academy?

    Seems our hopes are
    Matty Longstaff,
    Eliot Anderson,
    Bobby Clark
    Joe White,
Jack Young (all central mid I think)
    Kelland Watts (defence)

Clark and Anderson are the two most likely to make a huge difference.

There’s no doubt that Willock enjoyed his time with us, got on well with the coaching staff, and fitted into the way we were playing at the end of the season.
I think he wants to be a regular starter, and knows that he probably won’t be at Arsenal. It should all point to him coming back to us for the season ahead, except for one thing. His friends and family will no doubt be pointing out to him that if he wants to win anything, it’s pointless playing for NUFC so long as Ashley is the owner.
Cheerio Joe. It was good while it lasted.

Newcastle have received positive news in their pursuit of Joe Willock. Whilst he isn’t available immediately, Newcastle have been assured he is available once Arsenal sign a midfielder.

Arsenal open to either a loan, a sale, or a loan with an obligation to buy. #NUFC #AFC

Imagine if we all lambasted the frog every day when he was sure Mike Ashley was going to go bankrupt with his tax bills in Europe. He was so certain.

But we all allowed him his opinion and don’t hold him to it.

Yet he feels the need to bully Mund on here every day for about 6 months because he was hopeful the club would be sold and would share twitter posts.
