This is the team I suspect Steve Bruce will name for Saturday’s match against Southampton. It has eight changes from the cup defeat to Burnley but only one change from the Aston Villa loss.
With an international break looming, Bruce may hold both Paul Dummett and Isaac Hayden back as a precaution. That seems sensible in the case of Dummett, who has struggled immensely with injuries over the past few seasons.
So we could see the same back five as the Villa match with only Lascelles as a holdover from Burnley. Though having a left-footed player on the left of the back three really helps matters but it’s a good bet Fernandez will retain his place.
Jeff Hendrick was Newcastle’s best player against Burnley so could deserve another opportunity. Bruce said Hayden was touch and go for tomorrow with his sore knee.
I just get an inkling he will give Hendrick another shot after his performance on Wednesday even if it would be in the deeper role tomorrow.
Miguel Almiron and Joe Willock are highly likely to keep their place in the team. Sean Longstaff didn’t do enough against The Clarets to overtake either of them, though he was playing further back.
Bruce mentioned Saint-Maximin has a sore foot but it shouldn’t keep him out of the starting eleven. Wilson will be itching to make up for his early miss against Villa. When fit, both Allan and Callum are the difference makers and should be the first names on the teamsheet.

Comment #6Hendrick was nowhere near best player against Burnley he did ok by his standards he also played in a more advanced role with Longstaff (who was shite) holding. Fraser was by miles best player on the pitch, manny was excellent and joe showed some good touches. I’d expect murph to be dropped (maybe even Richie) for manny and Hayden will play if fit.
