Newcastle ‘Monitoring’ Norwegian International For Potential January Move – Report

Newcastle United released a ‘transfer update’ last week after failing to strengthen during the January window. The statement provided a detailed explanation of Joe Willock’s signing while also proclaiming ‘internal parties’ knew the club had little money to spend.

It has been suggested that part of the update was a message to Steve Bruce, who was reportedly upset the club refused to bring Hamza Choudhury in on loan from Leicester City on deadline day.

The ‘update’ served as little more than an attempt to justify an underwhelming window in which Newcastle were the only club not to strengthen from the back end of the previous campaign.

It did little to provide any hope for Newcastle fans that this January will be much different. While a lot will depend on where Newcastle sit in the league by the end of the year, it appears that there is going to be little money available in the winter window.

Newcastle do have both domestic loan slots available so if desperation arises, that is the likely route the club will take. However, we’ll still see links with big-money moves from time to time.

Football League World has kicked things off with an exclusive that Newcastle are monitoring Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge as a potential target in January. The Norwegian international is an interesting player who certainly would be a good addition to the Newcastle midfield.

The 23-year-old was a surprise addition when signing from Belgium’s Genk for over £20m in January of 2020. A severe hamstring injury curtailed his progress last season limiting him to just 16 appearances.

With Sheffield now relegated, Berge was linked with moves over the summer. Both Liverpool and Arsenal were credited with interest. Newcastle’s name even popped up briefly. While he does have a relegation release clause, his price tag is still more than Newcastle could ‘afford’ this past summer.

So unless a change of heart happens at the top at Newcastle, Berge seems an unrealistic target as he’ll cost a significant fee. There’s little chance Sheffield would agree to a loan with a purchase option as the midfielder is still tied down until 2024.

The Blades have started life back in The Championship in dreadful fashion with just 2 points in their first five fixtures. Berge has started all five matches but contracted Covid 19 last week keeping him out of Norway’s World Cup qualifiers.

It seems unlikely at the moment that Newcastle will pursue Berge this winter considering this past transfer window. The more likely route will be another push to land Choudhury on loan and possibly another defender if we are well down the table come January. Such is life as a Newcastle fan.

Hmmmm a player who signed for big money and isn’t actually doing that good even in the championship…..

Sounds like a typical Newcastle signing!!

I completely agree with Nicky that Joelinton is a good technical footballer who just has been played in exactly the wrong way by a clueless manager.

He hasn’t yet turned it into goals and assists but second half of last season you can see his ability to bring the ball down, roll past defenders and move direct to the box.

Over the first few games of this season I would actually be starting him over Almiron.

He is also the best choice to come in for Wilson but should be played alongside players in the forward line

For me there is still a good player in Joelinton but I doubt he will ever be found with Bruce as manager totally ruined the player beyond comparison to how he was before he signed for us if you ever see footage of him against Man City in the champs league he looked quality

I could 100% guarantee Rafa would be getting a hell of a lot more out of him if he was still here the guy would be played either wide left or in a Perez role for us which would suit his game rather than a hoof it to the big man striker which he isn’t at all

Joe got unfortunately stuck with the task of being lone striker under an awful manager. He’s been improving slightly more and more since not being asked to do that job. He is still our best player in terms of link up play between defence and attack I feel. ASM is essentially the get out of jail card; give it to him and hope. Whereas Wilson is hoof it long and hope he can chase it or hold it up. Joe usually shows for it short and links up with who is around him, allowing for more of a build up in the play. I don’t think he will ever be a 10, 15 -20 goals a season player, but he never was going to be. I’ve seen enough personally to believe he’s a good technical player who could be a far better and important player under a manager who knows how to use him and plays better football.

From the BBC – managers facing the media today
    Ralph Hasenhuttl – 11:00 BST
    Mikel Arteta – 12:00 BST
    Sean Dyche – 12:45 BST
    Graham Potter – 13:30 BST
    Brendan Rodgers – 13:30 BST
    Thomas Frank – 16:00 BST

So I guess we’ll have to wait until tomorrow for Bruce’s words of wisdom!

Potential January transfer target my arse. All these News Outlets linking us with this player and that every transfer window, serves no purpose other than to cause further frustration, cynicism of club policy and a greater hatred of Ashley.
Admittedly click bait isn’t going away but even the outlets who are totally desperate for a story must be aware that our tight fisted owner has no intention of allowing the club to spend it’s own money let alone a penny of his.

So glad the game isn’t on Sky Sports because the hype for it would be everywhere they aren’t mentioning it that much as they would be if it was the 5.30 kick off

Means we also don’t have to listen to Roy Keane, Souness etc creaming it over him after they have put 4 or 5 past us

For the masochists amongst us, I’m sure that Sky will be showing the whole game later on Saturday night.

It might even have their game of the day status. 🙁

Sadly, I’ll probably be drawn to it like the fly to the web. There’s no hope for me, escape while you can 😀

Speaking of Click Bait, if you haven’t seen it yet, I can highly recommend the programme of the same name currently showing on Netflix.

Kidnapping/murder mystery with a twist, only 8 episodes, give it a watch.

Donegal, there’s some good stuff on there, but as always it depends on what you like.

Spy/action drama – 2 seasons of Jack Ryan are good.

Comedy – the marvellous Mrs Maisel is an award winning show, 3 seasons so far.

The Boys – superheroes with a commercial twist. 2 seasons so far. It’s worth diving in and having a look. “The man in the high castle” got awards for its dystopian view of the US if Germany had won the war. 3 or 4 seasons. I’ve heard good things about “Bosch” but not got round to it yet, apparently on a par with “the Wire”. Have fun. 🙂
