Newcastle Concede In Extra Time To Enter Break 1-0 Down At Old Trafford

Newcastle held strong to keep Manchester United at bay but a late goal from Cristiano Ronaldo handed the hosts a 1-0 lead at halftime. The Red Devils had the bulk of possession and outshot The Magpies by a ratio of over 2-1 but clear-cut chances were at a minimum for both sides until the late strike.

Newcastle started in a 5-4-1 with a back three of Hayden, Lascelles, and Clark. Manquillo and Ritchie were the wing-backs with Longstaff and Willock in the midfield. Almiron was on the right with Joelinton on the left. Saint-Maximin was alone upfront.

The hosts came out of the gate with the lion’s share of possession as expected. Newcastle did get a decent chance through Joelinton in the 7th minute. The Brazilian collected the ball down the left and drove into the box but his tame effort was pulled wide of the goal.

Newcastle held strong defensively with Freddie Woodman not having to make a save in the first 20 minutes. Man United came very close as Raphael Varane’s glancing header drifted just wide of the far post. The defender was left unmarked in the box for the corner kick.

Newcastle continued to frustrate Manchester United defensively. The lads kept their shape and prevented any clear-cut opportunities. The hosts applied continual pressure with Newcastle pegged deep. We did offer a threat on the counter but struggled with the final ball.

The referee added two minutes of added time to close the half. It ended up punishing Newcastle as Ronaldo put the hosts ahead in the 47th minute. Freddie Woodman failed to gather a low shot from Mason Greenwood and Ronaldo pounced on the loose ball to give The Red Devils a 1-0 lead just before the break.

Not sure I understand the logic by playing Hayden at the back.

Almkst worth having him in midfield and playing almiron or willock more advanced instead of Joelinton.

I really need to not leave the room….went to the kitchen and come back to see 1-1…go to tell the wife we scored and come back and it’s 2-1…then I have to watch the replay of the ball going through Woodmans legs.

I’m ok with a defeat. I’ve seen enough to know we at least tried our best. It’s a good performance all round.

This is Miggys best game in over a year. Makes you wonder where tf he’s been all this Time. Same with Longstaff, one or two errors but otherwise he’s been the best I’ve seen him in a long time.

Stupid offside by Almiron there. ASM should have seen he was clearly offside.

I’ll take this line up with Wilson and one of the D’s between the posts. Although Longstaff still showing some poor decisions.

    Told everybody Woodman was overrated.

Quite simply he’s built like a teenage boy. Too slight, not a big enough wingspan, hands or body profile and no exceptional agility or reflexes to make up for it.

The gobby git on here, can’t remember his moniker such is my disconnect from NUFC and this place now, the one who can dish it and can’t take it, can never let anything go, was convinced he was going to be Newcastle’s long-term no1 and eventually England’s.

    Boycott football.

Just our luck that when the whole team plays well the keeper messes it up gifting 2 goals. We’re such a frustrating team.

I don’t really see that Murphy is so much more of an attacking option than Manquillo. Manquillo was really pushing forward

Woodward shouldn’t be in the first at all! He’s Division 1 at best. Our defence has really
Stepped up to the challenge today only for a substandard piss poor goalkeeping display.
