Newcastle put in a valiant effort until collapsing late at Old Trafford. Manchester United found their stride in the second half as The Magpies continue their poor start with a 4-1 defeat. A goal from Javier Manquillo made it interesting for a few minutes but the hosts grabbed three goals in the second half to seal all three points.
Steve Bruce made no changes for the second half after trailing 1-0 at the break. The lads started brightly offering a threat on the counter.
Newcastle found the leveler through an unlikely source in Javier Manquillo in the 56th minute. Almiron started the break with some superb dribbling. He found Saint-Maximin who laid it off for Manquillo in the box. The Spaniard provided an excellent finish for his first goal as a Magpie to make it 1-1.
It took just over 5 minutes for Man United to answer. It was another goal from Ronaldo in which Woodman should have done better. Luke Shaw surged up the pitch playing Ronaldo into the box. He took a touch before firing a shot that went through Woodman’s legs to give the hosts a 2-1 advantage.
Newcastle came close in the 67th minute. Ritchie received a pass from Joelinton on the left. He played it back to the Brazilian who showed strength to keep upright in the box. His shot was punched over the bar by De Gea for a corner.
Bruce made his first change in the 77th minute. It was an attacking one with Jacob Murphy coming on for Javier Manquillo, who put in an excellent shift down the right flank.
Bruno Fernandes made it 3-1 with a beautiful strike in the 80th minute. It started with a superb kick from De Gea to release Mason Greenwood. He was pushed wide but played it to Pogba who found Fernandes outside the box. Newcastle’s fatigue showed as they failed to close him down resulting in his long-range effort that sailed into the top corner.
Jamal Lewis came on for Ciaran Clark soon after the goal. A few minutes later it was Jeff Hendrick on for Willock. Both changes were straight swaps with Lewis on the left side of that back three and Hendrick into the midfield.
The changes did little to affect the outcome. Newcastle were out of gas and unable to mount any late comeback. Jesse Lingard added a goal in stoppage time to make it another lopsided result.
It was a decent effort for around 75 minutes. However, that is little consolation as we have just 1 point and have conceded 12 goals in our four matches. We now are only above Norwich in table as the slide continues.

Comment #1The only change I’d make to this team is Wilson for joelinton and dummet for Clark

Comment #2if only lascelles & joe put in more mobility and reading during the game than they did after the whistling anticipating and running to Ronaldo to get his shirt, we wouldn’t have been thrashed like this.
pathetic from the captain.

Comment #3Longstaff was great but his partnership with willock needs work
They need to study how Phillips and rice complement each other for England
When one goes the other one stays
The space in front of the back 4/5 is never left unguarded
Longstaff and willock have a lack of understanding and it’s costing us bucket loads of goals

Comment #9I don’t understand why Bruce will not play the same team in a 4231 formation.
Hayden is not a CD but with him in midfield he act like a third centre back, whilst pushing the midfield up. I presume it is because our defenders are too slow, but it puts the team out of balance having three at the back and no amount of player playing out of position will remedy that.

Gobsmacking how somebody who should be a mechanic in Brazil earning £10k a year is earning £70k a week for playing football.

Because that would mean playing Ritchie as a left back in a back 4
Which would be distastrous

Comment #12Man U were very average today and still hammered us. I don’t think you can say we had a good performance.
How low our standards have dropped.
Anyway, this carrying the ball 40 yards with Almiron and ASM is never going to work. They’re always absolutely blowing out of their ar$e in the second half and that’s when we get picked to pieces.
West Ham this year, Leeds last year, Man U last year, Man U this year are a few which jump to my mind right now. But I bet there are plenty more examples.

Comment #13Woodman mistake on the first goal but little he could do on his 2nd. It was well hit from close range, there’s loads of goals like that scored every year in the Premier League

Comment #14Toonbrother Willock for me should have started up front, last season I noticed his tracking back left something to be desired. The lad is stronger on the ball than most of our attacking players and has a knack for nipping the ball off a hesitant defender.

Ideally I would not play Ritchie, Clarke or Joelinton.
Was Willock trying to play the central/middle holding role today, with Longstaff and Almiron inverted on either side?
If so, why?

Comment #16Under Bruce, frankly we really have no other ideas but to give the ball to them to run 40 yards.
If you are expecting anything more you’ll be disappointed as it requires a young mind and a tactical mind and understanding of modern football.
You are not getting that with Bruce.

I think the idea was for willock Longstaff and miggy to play as trio with Longstaff playing deepest
But willock seemed confused about his role defensively
He was the weak link defensively in my opinion

Comment #19NADJ Hayden should be playing the right side of a back three with Lascelles in the middle and Dummet on the left, I know a few don’t like five at the back but under Bruce that’s where we seem to gain most points.

Comment #20Toon22, 100% agree. We would have expected maybe a 1 nil loss, 2-1.
If we got tonked 4-1 we would have been absolutely livid.
We can’t even go to games and expect to compete anymore.
We are nothing but a shadow of the club we used to be.

Comment #21I’m not going to blame Bruce for this defeat, this is all down to Ashley being a tight fisted ahole.
But Bruce you don’t get off that easy, you said during all the transfer window you had several irons in the fire but then said you knew Willock was the only signing and was told this.
So one owner Full of Shite, one manager suckling on the tit of someone who is Full of shite and is also Full of shite, call yourself a fan?
Congratulations to all in charge for making our team look like a shower of shite.

Comment #32You play 3 at the back with proper wingbacks you allow Longstaff the luxury of more time on the ball to assess his options, we don’t have the squad or capability to play 2 up front so allowing ASM and Almiron/Joe to push up with Willock with the reasonable security of a Murphy who has legs and pace behind them would alow the team to be more front foot.
